  • Season 4 of Making Waves kicks off with the quintessential discussion on the mighty Van Halen with Van Halen Rising author, Greg Renoff. In this episode, Greg talks with host Tom Prather about Eddie Van Halen and his impact on the world of music and the guitar. The line in the sand is drawn as they discuss the legendary battle of lead singers in Van Halen and did it really led to a change in the band's sound. Also why fans are split on Sammy Hagar and David Lee Roth, what really attributed to Michael Anthony's fall from grace in the Van Halen camp, and his experience at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, California.
Greg Renoff is a historian and the author of “Van Halen Rising: How a Southern California Backyard Party Band Saved Heavy Metal” and “Ted Templeman: A Platinum Producer's Life in Music,” the authorized autobiography of the Grammy-winning record producer.

I would argue that EVH was not hitting all cylinders in 2007 like he was in 2012/2013/2015.
Agreed however that DLR was best vocally (for reunion shows) in 2007.
The 2013 Tokyo Dome show was likely chosen for release as it was a sentimental (home game turf) for DLR as he'd been living in Tokyo for the previous 2 years.
I was at the Tokyo Dome show and it was incredible night. I do agree that listening to the album under a microscope is not the greatest listen however.... but I'm glad to have it.
    Cheers,

When Ed took like a break from that 2007-2008 tour to clean up a bit after Wolfgang got on him, he came back like a new person. He even looked different. Go look at some of the videos. I’m pretty sure it was the beginning of 2008 when Ed got totally sober/clean for good.

Dave was always Vaudville, that's his foundation. It's disappointing when someone obviously has done little research on Dave and can only discuss the surface of the man.

Dave, when he stopped emulating Robert Plant, was a trail blazer. Mixing that ole jazz club vocal style with hard rock was genius. Then the clothes, the stage presence….Just a Gigolo as a solo cover?? the videos, all of it from Van Halen 1 to Eat’m & Smile, Dave followed his own personal taste & to say it was successful is an understatement. I would put his contribution up there with all of those 70’s & 80’s greats, from Bowie & Mark Bowlin to Michael Jackson, Prince, & Madonna, etc. But the problem with being healthy & lucky, u live past ur era. Imagine having people tell u in the 90’s & 2000’s that ur ideas r not viable after having every idea prior turn to gold? Of course he just followed his own drum & it’s embarrassing nevertheless the reason why.
But while we r all chatting about the DLR legacy, in my opinion, the only thing Dave is guilty of is not recognizing that his time had passed. We see that with many celebrities & artists. He was still running it up the flag pole & seeing who salutes. That takes balls (man or woman) so I agree its tough to watch but I respect his never wavering. When I hear him getting wacky on Joe Rogan’s podcast, I think about his early work & admit to myself, of course he is odd…..how else could he have created what he created even in 1971?? 1984? & certainly lol the Crazy From the Heat era. Right on Dave!! Thank goodness we have freaks in the world to keep the ball rolling. 🤘🏻

I think the original Van Halen and Dave in particular gets better with age. Particularly his lyrics and wit. There’s never been anything like that before or since. And to be that great of an athlete at the same time - super impressive.
I think it was tragic they broke up but at the same time they achieved what they set out to do. A great run that ended with a bang. I don’t even count the later day stuff that’s just old dudes raking in cash because they can and what else are they going to do all day?

I loved Dave’s antics during their music videos.
But I hate watching him caper pointlessly about, live.
You could say the same for his vocals: great on the recordings/albums. But not so much, live.
Both criticisms ring true for this last tour and really for the last thirty years.
Eddie once said maybe they shouldn’t reunite and tour again. That those great memories of long past tours should be left alone, unspoiled.
    Boy was he right.
Go dial up any live stuff post-Sammy. Dave looks and sounds like shit
. I guess in the end Eddie didn’t really care.
Wolf was right there. Should’ve had him sing the lead that whole time.
Mike could’ve been there on bass.

The moronic take we never needed. Classic Van Halen has aged beautifully. Yes, he is goofy now, but compare classic DLR to the most popular form of music now, hip hop, and he's the timeless, epic, front man, in the vein of any hip hop star. 1976 - 1984 Diamond Dave is the greatest front man of all time.
