My friend, I always look forward to your wonderful and informative videos. Please keep up the good work. The Alfetta has a place in my life and heart. I do like the GTV. Seeing the steering wheel and clocks in the video took me back to my younger days. I never owned one, but friends did. It is hard now (UK perspective) to describe the "otherness" of Alfa on the 1970s and 80s. They were rare. They were "other". They were not just Fiats with a funny nose. I do like Italian cars and I know of Autodelta, but this model had passed me by completely. I was quite unaware there was such a thing. And as for 150bhp.... That was pretty good back then. A fascinating video of one of the most amazing GTV's ever made!! I wish I had the money to purchase this beauty!! Great Video as always Matteo. We are 200 metres from the G7 Conference in Carbis Bay, Cornwall, UK. Here's to a better future!!
My father owned for a very short time an Alfetta GTV Autodelta. It was very special as we're spanish and that car was UNIQUE in the country, no other known Autodelta was in Spain at the time. Unfortunately we couldn't keep it as it needed some fixing and the parts were uncommon and expensive. My father really regrets not having been able to keep the car, it really was a majestic sight.
I had the chance to buy an Alfetta GTV in red but needed some work and at the time my wages were not gonna keep the car o the road. Was a beautiful car !
Back when they were sensible money, I had two Alfetta GTVs. Couldn't really afford to run them both but I acted on the advice of my father who told me to listen to my heart, not my head.
Interesting... and beautiful. And what's blowing my mind is that Autodelta was thinking about rallying at the same time they were investing hard in Formula 1 - 1979 was the year of it's return, after 38 years of absence. Too bad it wasn't sucessiful, the potencial for a good Group 4 car was there, even if thay wanted to go further to Group B. But... it didn't happen.
Yes indeed. It amazes me how many things Autodelta did, given the few resources it had. The GTV had the pace to be a successful rally car… At least at national or european level. The later Group B cars would have outgunned Autodelta by a long shot, however
I don’t think the Scuderia del Portello bought it from Ferrari… But it would be cool if it did :) Unfortunately, I’m no expert about trucks, so I don’t think I’ll ever make an Iveco video 😊
Another beautiful Alfa. 150hp was a good output from a 2 litre engine back in the seventies. Combined with a fairly light weight (1100kg according to Wikipedia) it must have been a quick car. My only sadness is I suspect I can’t afford this rare turbocharged beauty either! Grazie mille Matteo.
It was indeed a fast car in period. I wish I could afford it too, it would already be mine! Of the six cars I filmed at the Portello Factory, this is the one I’d love most to have :)
In the US the company called Callaway, yeah the manufacturer of turbo Corvettes did a turbo version of the Alfa Romeo GTV and I believe it had a 2.5L V6 w/ fuel injection and an intercooler. Unknown fact about AutoDelta is in the early 80s they also tried to make a ceramic head for the diesel that was offered in the Alfetta model.
Yes I'm aware of the Callaway conversion for the GTV6, which was commissioned to him by Alfa's US branch, which feared competition from the Maserati Biturbo. Fascinating bit of Alfa history that one!
That design came out with the Montreal in ‘71 and soon became a staple of Alfa Romeos in the 70s. Manufactured in different sizes, they could be had as an option on Spiders, Alfettas, Giuliettas…
It is an Autodelta turbo... Turbodelta... I don't think Lancia think they own the Greek alphabet, or all triangles... Note the Autodelta logo shape (on the guards) ....
The fact the cards left the factory "stock" and were modified down the road at Autodelta is one thing. There were also cars that left the factory stock, made it to Australia (RHD, which further complicated fitting the "kit") and then had the Autodelta supplied parts retrofitted by either Alfa Rome Australia or the Alfa dealer... These had a few regional variations to spec (like the brakes and wheels used....). And included some alfetta sedans. I've always been curious which if any of these contributed to the homologation numbers, and also whether anyone really kept track of the number of Alfettas that went straight from factory to Autodelta to be converted as opposed to the number of conversions shipped (installed in car or not) by Autodelta...
I'm told 200 cars went straight to Autodelta, while the other 200 needed for homologation were transformed using the kits you mentioned. But there's no supporting evidence, so take it with one or two grains of salt!
@@Matteo_Licata thanks for the info. So if 200 were "needed" beyond the Autodelta built cars, and my 2 counted (a John French Turbodelta and a sedan version, both "kits" actually fitted to cars in 1981 in Australia) it was an interesting "strategy" to reduce homologation costs. Especially as I doubt all 200 were ever fitted.

Were road-going versions of the 1.8-2-litre turbocharged Twin-Cam and early Twin Spark engines at their limit or was there room for more power to be reliably extracted and crack through the 200 hp barrier before non-stock modifications were required?
