    It would be nice if bases far from everything would have an “isolation bonus” that would reduce zombie threat to compensate for its inconvenient location.

      I feel the same way but thought in the opposite direction, where the center of the map was always a coveted urban area, densely packed with resources, zombies, defensible positions, and friendly/neutral/enemy enclaves. But why not both?
      I also prefer the idea of being able to turn any cleared outpost into a main base, so that you can choose your location from the start based on strategic location and current or foreseeable community needs. As you accrue supplies you can fortify the main floor and build walls. As your community grows you can expand the size of your walls, possibly enveloping nearby buildings (which could be a cell tower, mechanic's garage, gas station, house, etc.) into your base, or simply expanding your yard to give yourself more outdoor small and large slots. I don't mean to suggest that the game should go all Fallout 4 on us with uber levels of customization. Presets are enough because enemy enclaves will be capturing, fortifying, and growing their territory, too.
      This would mean that all of the currently-designed bases would be something you can capture as outposts. If you choose to capture them instead of using them as a base, they could be treated as unique/prized outposts, similar to landmarks. Go ahead and capture the Drive-In, even though its location doesn't make it a suitable main base. You instantly gain 2 beds. Upgrade it once to unlock the bonus to morale. Upgrade it again to unlock a small slot. Upgrade it a final time to unlock a large slot. Then assign your crankiest community member to that location for some much needed R&R. Switch to them whenever a quest, enclave, or plague heart pops up in that area.
      Just make sure to patrol the road(s) between your base and outposts once or twice a week to make sure that hostile units don't cut off supply lines. Having your auto mechanic and engineer work together to build a turret atop your vehicle will help clear the roads and finally make use of those full auto weapons that tend to collect dust. A truck with dual AKs mounted to a rotating turret? Yes please! It is okay to make noise when you'll be gone a second later. Expect to lose some trunk space and fuel efficiency. Or use a generator at your base to charge up an electric vehicle for a stealthier option. Let's throw in a hybrid SUV while my wishlist continues to grow out of control.
      Speaking of growing...
      Don't have an engineer to help you build your base efficiently? Assign your gardener, pharmacologist, and pathologist (the latter is the only necessary person, but the other two help speed up the process and use fewer resources) to a lab where they can genetically engineer fast-growing and fast-dying Plague Walls to seal off an alleyway or otherwise create choke points. Have them genetically engineer a way to grow plague hearts, while you're at it, so that you can infest strategically chosen buildings to harass or otherwise make enemy enclaves think twice prior to entering certain areas. Upgrade them further with modified plague samples so that zombies near your plague hearts don't attack your community members. Expect to lose influence with people who don't like zombies in their neighborhood.
      Of course your pathologist will need to concentrate on their work, so keep their needs met within the safety of your base's walls. Such a valuable member of your community might get kidnapped or otherwise wind up working against you. Red Talon might be especially interested in weaponizing zombies. The Network might be interested in removing a zombie's violent tendencies. With whom will you share your results? Both? Neither? They might just try to take it without your approval.

    • @OutdatedLeon
      @OutdatedLeon 3 года назад +6

      From the way zombie sieges work in SOD2, the roof isn't really that optimal for siege deterrent.
      If the sieges work like in SOD1 - where multiple hordes spawn on the roads a few blocks away from your base and march slowly towards your base, the roof then can be a good sniping point for picking off these deadheads who slowly come to view.
      In SOD2, they're doing it like in SOD1:Lifeline; but it's done in a worse way - sieges just spawn zombies in view - right next to your door. In Lifeline, zombies do not spawn that close - they spawn from across the road before zerging to your gate.This means that you will still at least have time to shoot them down from afar - about a few seconds before they reach to your walls. In SOD2, zombies just magically appear two feet from your gate. And if you tried it, you'll find that it's quite difficult to have a clear shot on them on the roof when they're right next to your walls.
      And yeah, I do miss the old zombie sieges in SOD1. It gives me not only time to prepare but also the clearance to strategize how I'm going to deal with them - do I use my vehicle to drive them over on the street? Or do I stay put in the base and aid my fellow survivors to snipe the zombies? Or I do actively go out and there and lay landmines on the roads? It gives me the freedom to do problem solving other than "guess I'll wait here and shoot my guns".

    I've found that in Drucker county, how you build a base is a lot different than in more open maps. There's a distinct benefit to focusing on being material and fuel positive, and using the auto-shop and staging area to their utmost ability. Being materially positive means having access to ammo via a munitions tech, and taking advantage of the auto-shops' active abilities with upgraded vehicles shines in a map where you're stuck to long roads and narrows clogged with hordes.

    The Cabin Park motel comes with 3 free beds and an open center area so it is easy to defend against sieges without characters getting stuck/trapped on objects. The 3 free beds is equal to another small facility slot so it is effectively a 5 small slot, 2 large slot base. I like it.

    • @GitGudFox
      @GitGudFox Год назад

      Thing about beds is all they do is protect you from -7 morale per character. Most players overvalue beds because the game makes you think they're important.
      Example.
      3 Characters without beds = -21 morale.
      Build 1 shelter with 2 beds now = -7 morale because 2 beds blocks -7 morale for 2 survivors.
      INSTEAD
      Build 1 latrine and clean latrine = +9 morale.
      How? clean latrine is +10 morale x ALL community members.
      +10 x 3 Survivors = +30 Morale.
      +30 Morale - 21 Morale from no beds = +9 morale.
      This is why beds are not good.

I want to officially request that you cover 5th skills and ideal traits to look for such as unbreakable, just keeps going, and determined. Also, the benefits, if any, to recruiting Red Talon NPCs to your community with the negatives they add and some are major like 50% fatigue rate penalty or 50% disease susceptibility. Another suggestion is to cover ideal starting skills such as Lichen, Fisher, Music and Driver among many others. Thanks for your insight!!!

The Container Fort is the king of all bases but I would much rather operate out of the Barricaded Strip Mall than Whitney Field any day. The Barricaded Strip Mall Feels secure like an actual base where Whitney Field feels like playing in a neighbor's yard. • @evilwillhunting
    @evilwillhunting 4 года назад +3

    Once again, dead on, well made and well informed. Great job!
    If I may, these are my own strategies and thoughts on the Mall. Mileage varies of course:
    1. Locating Materials is something that takes 35 Influence (which you can get in minutes of normal gameplay) and will always generate a rucksack. As long as you dont mind going to get it (which is admittedly a pain in Drucker), you never have to worry about materials. Just keep on top of it.
    2. There's a Dewitt Van at the restaurant just down the road. Pick it up and put it near the gate as a handy little rucksack storage.
    3. I, too, am baffled on why you can't turn the dojo into something else. It's not like its full of anything, just mats and training dummies.
    4. Small concern but worth mentioning: this place is a pain to secure upon discovery. There's usually not many zeds inside, but lots of nooks and crannies you have to clear. It's easy to get blindsided by a lurking zed when you are checking back rooms.
    5. It might be worth your while to stockpile some ammo before moving in, then go into a big building frenzy to get set up. Then go off and explore. As long as you have 3 ammo to burn each time, you can let your folks at home deal with the sieges at max level.
    6. Another drawback is that this place only has one outdoor small slot: if you want a still you need to sacrifice the watchtower: if you dont have a Red Talon watchtower to use instead, this is going to open you up to more sieges.
    7. Another possibility is to tear down the bunks and just use outposts for the housing needs. Naturally, this will cost you the White Noise Machine morale bonus (if you have it)
    8. Setting up some hydroponics farms, then switching them to meds, and using them to build Plague Cure Cases will make you a fortune. It is, of course, a lot of work and slot sacrifices to do so.
    9. Sieges suck at this place if they get into the stores. Then you have to go in there and clean them out, and the other survivors will often linger inside, making it worse.
    10. If you are living in this base, I'd recommend The Kaiser as your vehicle of choice. It's very durable, it's pretty fast, it is remarkably nimble, and has decent fuel economy. That makes it a very good car for this map in general which requires so much driving and is inconvenient to repair pit stops. The only thing that will suck is its small trunk space (4 slots).
    Again, the ranking was just right. I think it speaks volumes that the Starter House ISN'T at the bottom. It's not because the house is so good, it's just the bases in Drucker are so bad. And this map is no fun to navigate, with all the meandering roads, clumped civilization, and the terrain and littered roads giving you many, many places to get stuck with your car.
    Finally, there's one more perk that should be said for the Mountain Lodge. You have the high ground for sieges. In fact, if you perch yourself on the Northeast ridge just outside the fence, most zombies will spawn at the foot of the mountain and charge uphill, making them sitting ducks, especially against a Gunslinger. Your other survivors should be able to take care of the other fronts.

    • @GitGudFox
      @GitGudFox 4 года назад

      When I used the mall in Nightmare Zone, it was pretty important to block the rear entrances because both survivors and zombies would get trapped in there including the plague juggernauts.

    just found out something the other day that may or may not make the truck stop worth another look. Personally, I still don't like it. That said:
    I learned that if you have finished the friendly enclave project for Auto Mechanics that give you the option to Call in a Vehicle via the radio (and even with DLC, it's the only way to call in a vehicle when doing co-op), then you will get Knowledge of Auto Mechanics. I was messing with my upgraded workshop after doing their missions and noticed that I was able to make upgraded tool kits even though my mechanic was an engineer. I was on Cascade Hills when I noticed this though.
    Could this make or break that facility in the truck stop? Maybe.
    A lot of the times when I play online with people 80% of them are asking me if the auto shop is a worth while option. A lot of people want upgraded cars and the passives from it, it would seem.
    I've often told people though, that you should only build it when you want the upgrade kits and if you can't afford them from wandering traders. Then destroy it for a better facility.
    I still agree with the rating since you can't tear it down when you don't need to use it and don't need the fuel efficiency with so much fuel storage. That and fuel isn't really hard to come by if you actually look for stuff.

    • @GitGudFox
      @GitGudFox 5 лет назад +1

      That's not a bad idea. You'd at least be able to use the autoshop. The problem I have with the autoshop is that it's not really a facility I like to have constructed 24/7. I prefer to build it, use it for the upgrades I need, then tear it down when I'm done with it. If I need it again, I just build it again temporarily.

    I found this map to be by far the easiest map to deal with and complete as there is only one grouping of buildings that can not be scouted by a billboard/scout tower, there seem to be far fewer plague hearts on this map as this is the smallest of the 3 maps, and the starting base is in such a great location that you can gather supplies and build your enclave support so quickly that you can be fully prepared to move into of the better bases and start taking out all of the plague hearts by day 3.
    Though until watching this video it never occurred to me that anyone would continue to just not follow the roads to their destination. After playing several open world racing games, it's just burned into my mind that for the most part it's far faster to just take the roads. There are a few things you can cut but basically if you can't see the road you're trying to shortcut to, it's not faster

    • @GitGudFox

      People don't have trouble with DC because they lack the imagination to find shortcuts. It's because people waste more time trying to find shortcuts and decide driving on the road is the most efficient path instead of potentially wasting a great deal more time finding shortcuts.
      It sounds to me that you simply have a high familiarity with this map, or you haven't really thought about how much more efficient the other maps are due to their simpler terrain.

Though it is probably true that I have a better understanding of this map, especially now that I've been trying to complete all four legacies again on the harder difficulties, with this being the map I've put myself on for these playthroughs.
      As for the other maps, I've got a decent understanding of where everything is and a few simple cuts I can make, but having done only 2 playthroughs on each, 1 by myself and another helping one of my friends on the Hills map, and the lady friend through the Valley. There's definitely more on those maps that I could probably take advantage of that I just haven't yet taken the time to discover. Though DC seems to be the simplest map with the least to learn

      DC has the most concentrated towns and the fewest sporadically dotting buildings of the regions. It is definitely that.

    I’m spending 100 days on each map. I saved Drucker for last... I found out that was a mistake as the days get longer as your day count goes up. So I should be spending more time in Drucker now. I will be moving to the Motel when I get there.

      I didn't spend 100 days on Drucker County, but I was there for a while when I needed to record the footage for all the bases. I am definitely glad to be out of the map.

    • @GitGudFox
      @GitGudFox 4 года назад

      I haven't. I don't know how to format it either since there are so many vehicles in the game, and they don't all appear in the same map. It's random + unknown amount of time to obtain each vehicles + use the vehicle for a while to get the feel for it. It's doable, but I haven't thought of how to obtain, test, record, and format the information into a video.

    You can't expect every map to have same set of challenges Fox. That's what makes them unique.

    • @GitGudFox
      @GitGudFox 4 года назад

      I don't expect that. What gamers who click on this video expect is a snapshot of what Drucker County is like and whether or not the bases are good.
      Making a value judgement on whether or not it's good that Drucker County is the way that it is doesn't have anything to do with the video's subject matter.

      Something I think UL got in reverse is that they put some of the highest quality bases in the easiest region, Meagher Valley. They should have put the highest average base quality in DC to offset the challenge of the terrain and gas expenditure etc.

    • @affandede6412
      @affandede6412 4 года назад

      @@GitGudFox My guess is that they created these three maps with a logical progression in mind. You have Meagher Valley with its open fields and dope bases, then you have Cascade Hills as a middle ground in terrain and bases department, and then finally you have Drucker County, which is the hardest to traverse but doesn't have that many nice bases.

      No, but the value is pretty low compared to other methods. At the minimum, I would get a munitions expert and a filling machine, convert the fuel into the throwable fuel bombs (you make 12 at a time with this setup), and they sell for a lot more than just selling the rucksacks raw.

    • @GitGudFox
      @GitGudFox 4 года назад

      It's not just about subjectivity. None of the bases can do what Squelone's Brewery can do, but none of the bases also have the same kind of small facility options and features of the Container Fort. No other base but the Lumber Mill can produce materials or have 5 large slots.
      The best bases in the game do such extremely different things from one another, that declaring 1 of them the best seems nonsensical.

    • @GitGudFox
      @GitGudFox 4 года назад

      This video is easy because I'm not comparing all the bases to one another, just the bases of Drucker County in this place. Each region has a much more distinct hierarchy of base qualities. If you compared all of the bases of all the regions, it'd be really hard to declare 1 of them the best.

  • @konstantinIII

    While drucker county is a slower map because of drive time, i think the topography gives the player a subtle advantage over Z's basically every single neighborhood is surrounded by rocky outcropping that prevents massive hordes from surrounding you on all sides

    • @konstantinIII
      @konstantinIII 4 года назад

      I also have yet to have a jug spawn at vogel because i don't think the topography allowed the game very many random juggs in that area in the first place?\

    • @GitGudFox
      @GitGudFox 4 года назад

      I want to say I have fought a juggernaut near the Vogel house, but I will also say that I don't have very strong memories of this which indicates they could very well be uncommon in that area.

    • @GitGudFox
      @GitGudFox 4 года назад +1

      I guess the counter argument to this benefit is that fighting less juggernauts means less influence and less plague samples. Also, your allies are drastically more effective in combat now and can neutralize juggernauts much more easily when equipped with halfway decent guns.

    • @konstantinIII
      @konstantinIII 4 года назад

      @@GitGudFox they still occur they during sieges and things but vogel house basically only has half of the ambient zombie spawning area of other bases. and because of the hills and things its much easier to just pot shot your feral hordes for your 170 influence. not saying its amazing just saying that maybe less experienced players can still navigate nightmare mode on this particular map
