My 2 cents...for a good system admin....you got to know to have good idea on below 1. server knowledge ( Load average, ports, filesystems, ulimit sizes, config files) 2. any one monitoring server 3. Backup server 4. VMware knowledge 5.any IAAS,PAAS 6. bash scripting if you have good foundation on above, having knowledge on puppet,jenkins,maven....that would be icing on cake and most importantly...be honest...if you dont know something say you dont know....if you blabber and waste interviewer time, they would be in impression that you are making up stuff on topics which you are already good at.....YOU NEED NOT KNOW EVRYTHING OUT THERE.....just relax.....Good luck!!!
I have an interview for a Sys Admin position this afternoon. I have been in this "grey" area as a desktop support tech for a decade but with Sys Admin responsibilities. So I figure its time to take the next step, lets see how it goes. Thanks for the vid!
@BayArea510 You know, you are not the only one who is in the "Grey" area of Desktop support or Technical support, it includes me as well as thousands of others. All of us must take this step forward to become a System Admin ASAP and reach the next level. It requires lots of learning in most cases to clear interviews. We should not stop trying if we fail once, but keep trying until we get through. All the best!!!!
I completely agree bud! What I found to help a lot was having a lab setup in my home. I have multiple servers setup that run everything from file servers to network load balancers, to administration of our home security cameras (via LAN and vpn), to a multimedia server that hosts all of my music, movies and TV series that I can access from anywhere and give others access to. In having such a setup I'm able to manage all of the end users that connect, I manage my WSUS and I push out packages when needed. Now I do a lot of this at work but its nice to have a setup like this at home so when I'm studying and I come across a technology I'm not familiar with and can implement it into my environment. Lets all keep pushing forward Roshan and become the best Sys Admins that we can be!!
I have one in 2 day times, and I am trying to get the English terms for a lot of things, because I have been working like an IT SysAdm the last 9 years but in Spanish.
My problem isn't basics, I understand what AD is, ftp, dns, dhcp, gpos, the problem is I have no hands on experience, so there like no were looking for someone who can get started. How can I get an experience without a shot, I've got 10 years with help desk and a good understanding but I'm stuck in this low level stuff.
Thanks for the interview tips. Can you please share at website names/ community to get jobs in Europe. I have 6 years of experience in Virtualization(VMware, Hyper-V, Nutanix AHV) and system administration
Quick question Danish, when job descriptions ask for "basic remote access solution implementation and support: VPN, Terminal services, Citrix"...What do you think they really want to hear?
+fatalradius They just want to know if you have experience with VPN related issues or support. For most parts if you are server admin and you configure the firewall you will also configure VPN with it or you will either support existing solution. On desktop support side they just want to know if you can install vpn on staff laptops or mobile devices. I discuss this in section "Section remote help and VPN" www.jobskillshare.org/course/help-desk-entry-level/ Thanks, Danish
Just in case, very strange example, but no so far a get interview for sys.adm (i'm work in this position like a 5 years, but i'm very young) and interviewer manager ask me about developer skills ( specific of this company - develop) it is been once for me, but how much anybody had this problem - ask specific question of company but not in case interview. And i fail only one part of interview - this, of his manages who ask me non-competent questions. Just for preparing, maybe i need to learn little bit develop things or something, very interesting.
