LEGOWELT PRESIDENT
This has not left the weekly rotation for over a year
"Avanti Italo Bar Theme" one of the best electro tracks ever.
Legowelt describes some of his Amiga workflow from his Gearslutz Q and A.
The Klaus Kinski EP, Beyond The Congo and Tower Of The Gypsies (and the later Amiga Railroad Adventures) were indeed all made using the Amiga 1200 running the Octamed Tracker.
I had a 12 bit sampler for the Amiga called AURA you could sample better quality then the usual lo-fi Ensoniq Mirage like 8 bit Sound…I converted these 12 bit samples to 8 bit with the AURA software (It would still sound better then if I sampled directly in 8 bit) and then loaded them in Octamed (as it wouldn’t read the 12 bit sample format).
I recorded the samples mostly on my Roland Juno 106 and Korg Poly 800. Without any FX. I would have folders with hundreds of these samples and with these I would make the tracks in Octamed. The drumsounds and vocal samples are mostly MIDI instruments, A lot of Roland R8MK2, a real TR808 and a really ****ty Roland JS30 sampler expanded so it would handle 16 bit samples.
The output from the Amiga sounds (It had a 2 channel output so I could mix it down a bit) went into an analog filter to warm it up and smooth the digital ‘amiga’ sound and of course do some filter tricks. This was most of the time a Sequential Pro One, Korg MS10 or the Cavia Micro modular in which I made a patch specifically to warm up the Amiga sound.
All this went into a D&R Holland Series 1000 mixer which had some FX on its auxiliaries. Some FX I used back then:The Dynacord DRS78, Zoom 1201, 1204FX, Roland Space Echo and particularly the EVANS ECHOPET.
This mixer was ex-Unit Moebius and also belonged to I-F, I think he mixed down Space Invaders Are Grass on that one. Later this mixer ended up with Mark Du Mosch who still has it I think???
This was recorded on either a Sony DTC DAT, TEAC 3430 / Philips N2521 reel to reel recorder
The Astro Cat Disco LP was more of a compilation album released on Clone with all sorts of songs from different times, there might have been some tracks with the Amiga but also tracks that were produced in a totally different way (with Cubase, or the MPC60 or 2000XL as sequencer)
For playing live there were/are all sorts of different methods back then: I would bring the Amiga with the Cavia Micro Modular and the R8MK2 and Roland JS30 and play the tracks with Octamed. For a short time I would play live with Cubase on a ****ty PC laptop synced with some drummachines and synths but that was kinda boring. I used an MPC2000XL for a while too but that was even more boring, you basically just press play and mute tracks and rotate the dial into the right pattern.
I am really bad at archiving stuff so I don’t really keep stuff I recorded, I don’t even have a lot of records that I made myself but I don’t really care about it

I'm listening with studio monitors and a DAC for the first time and there are little echoes and sounds that I never heard through earbuds before
It's because you are not using earbuds.
I love this shit, most sounds can be made with commodore 500, it's all you need, just the basic sounds to make you dance
he has some earlier work with amiga - but he has a massive synthesizer collection, too - synthesizers u ll need, too !! and the workflow with "newer" DAW s its much better than on the amiga i think - more features .... that means not that a simple sound can be great - ....

This mix is fire. I'm a Commodore fan from way back, though I could never afford an Amiga. There must be something special about the sound chip, but it takes someone like Legowelt to make great music with it.

This is the Legowelt sound I first knew of when I first found out about him. He had a bunch of free downloads on A website that was like Aubergine Records or something around 2006. Pure gold.

Sometimes I wonder why these tracks are better than his newer one.. Maybe is the genre that I like more, or the workflow was better, or he had more time to produce.. Don't know, but love this album
I feel like he consistently changes his style. He does more ambient Style and he used to always use like old Tech back then. Now I feel like he's too focused on computers now
the upcoming LP is more in the older vein. perhaps one of his best hes ever released. its like a mixture of old and new style and there is a track i was heavily waiting for since months and months. the last LPs always got minimum one killer track but i didnt find more to buy the records. the new one is nearly full of killers and will be an instant buy for me.
