SRF617 LAST SANDOWN PORTLINK SHUNT

  • The industrial branch line to Sandown (Western Sydney) only had days to go when the last Patrick's Portlink service was caught shunting the former siding at Sandown, then chased to Camellia (the now also closed Carlingford line).
See decorated, but now scrapped, ALCo DL531 locomotives 48136 and 4887 shunting their train. Then the ceremonial placing of detonators along the railhead marks the final time it would operate on the branch.
Not long after, the final train would run along this fascinating industrial line. Following this, it would slowly become overgrown.
Today, the whole area around Camellia, including the railway station, has been totally obliterated in preparation for the new Parramatta light rail which will operate from Parramatta, across the Camellia, then head north along the former railway formation to Carlingford.
I am thinking that the closure of the Sandown line leaves only the one to Port Botany as Sydney's last real industrial branch line.
A historic moment in Sydney railway history.
In memory of the late Dennis 'Fumey Humey' Hume.

Great video. As someone who’s modelling the sandown line, I’d love to see anymore footage you have of it.

Wow, you have my attention. Have long thought it would be an ideal branch to model.
Somewhere in the mountains of DVDs I have the view from the guards compartment from Sandown to, I think, Clyde. That was likely from the late 80s or early 90s. Hopefully, find it soon.
I've literally thousands of photos I am slowly going through. I would imagine there are more photos yet to come.
Do you put photos of your layout progress online anywhere? I'd be really interested.
This is a video of the Zoo Train going out there in 1994.

If you go to my blog and search Sandown you will find related photos.

      A bit of a coincidence.
Today I get to a pile of 49 class shots I had to scan.
Started getting.them together for a blog post.
There is a lot of Sandown shots amongst them.
Will be on the earlier mentioned blog in coming days.

@@NeathSpadge so far I’ve only got the base boards and track plan down, still awaiting scenery to start. I’ve posted some photos in the NSW Diesel Era Modelling group but nothing really if note to show off just yet.
Thanks for the recommendations and here’s to more photos and videos!

2024 Update. The Sandown Line will be incorporated into Parramatta Light Rail Stage 2. At the end of the existing line, it will cross over the river to Rydalmere and then proceed to Wentworth Point and through to Olympic Park.
