Would you be able to make a video about timeless pieces ? A lot of people want to partake in trends but not everyone has the financial freedom to keep up with them.
So many “trends” coming in and out these days at a more rapid rate and most of that blame is on social media and all these pop up influencers setting rules. Interior design now feels like one big high school with the popular kids dictating what’s hot and what’s not. Guys, remember do what you want because everything Kristen and all these other designers are saying is “on trend” now in these videos, will be out of here next year or at the quick rate trends change now, the next few months. Then comes right back years later. Just save your money and design your space with that in mind.
Exactly. Kristen has good content for the most part but it’s videos like this from her and other RUclips interior designers that fuel the poison. It’s sad. A lot of people don’t have a mind for themselves so they follow videos like this or things on Pinterest and instagram thinking what these designers say is law and lose countless amounts of dollars keeping up with these pointless trends until it’s too late.
Yup , I hit like for 98% of her videos , but this one , I don’t like it .. seems like ? Whaaaat ? What happen , oh well I’m happy with what I have I won’t change it … but I still like Kristen , just not this video trend “
Who can afford to change their home every time the trends change? I figure as long as you keep a natural, clean look to your house and NOT go for what is trendy you don't need to worry about "dating" your style & decor.
Form follows function. What your kitchen looks like pales in comparison to what it is like to work in. I avoided shiny anything, especially countertops, because I want to see the food I am preparing more than the glare of polished granite. Dark, dark colors show dirt and smudges. My cabinets are not light or dark but somewhere in between, and I never tire of them. I have no backsplash, so I could alter the color anytime I have the whim.
Do what makes you peaceful and happy. Keeping up with the Jones’ and letting others dictate what your home and life should look like makes for a stressful life and an empty bank account….the trendsetters, influencers and marketers are laughing all the way to the bank.
Upon unboxing, I was immediately upset at how the rails were very noticeably bent. But I kept going, all tools needed to assemble were included ruclips.net/user/postUgkxqtX4Dxs6aecAZEuz6GY5-d81YecKCshn and I had it set up in about 30 minutes. Honestly I love this thing, make sure to read the measurements and measure your space so you know if it'll work for you. I bought this to put inside my closet, underneath where I hang my clothes and it is absolutely perfect! It is VERY sturdy and all drawers glide easily and mine are stuffed, and they are still flush when closed.
The hampster wheel of trends seems to be whirling faster & faster so it really is more important than ever to do what you find attractive and will enjoy living with for years and years. It reminds me of the wide leg/skinny leg pant "style" which seems to switch every year now! Just keep both styles if you want to "keep up" with fashion style.
The floating shelves look great as long as they are not cluttered with things. Also, the dust that will collect on plates and cups is major on open shelving. Closed cabinets keep your dishware covered and dust free.
I just built a house...just 3, 21" shelves, for a plant, my pottery jug and tea set...what am I supposed to do with things given to me as gifts? Like my ceramic salad set? Given to me over the years? I think a bit of this and that everywhere is great, and personal. Candles. Plants. Antiques, paintings....I love my home with my books, and yes a white kitchen, with open concept, with blue paintings, pillows....area rugs.....I loved it for years and won't follow "trends"
Everyone has complemented me on my white subway tiles in the bathroom, black hexagon tiles. on the floor...and shiny quartz counters. So out of style or not, keeping it !
Trying to keep up with “trends” is insanity. While I think paying attention is good, finding things you love with an eye on classics makes so much more sense. That way, you can refresh less expensive items periodically & still have a great look. Thanks for sharing.
I'd be careful with "classic." 2000 era Tuscan kitchens were originally called "classic" because supposedly Italian Tuscan style is timeless. Then we were told white subway tiles kitchens are classic, and now they're dated. Ultimately, if a trend becomes too popular it will go out of style because everyone thinks they're an individual and don't want what others have.
I have an all white kitchen. I love and will always keep it. When someone says it is out of style, it is designers and companies who want to sell a trend and merchandise.
I too love white kitchens, as long as they're not ALL white. That gets a little sterile and boring. I've seen a lot of people paint their lower cabinets a dark color or use a darker countertop and backsplash to break up all the white.
I created my farmhouse kitchen 22 years ago when it wasn’t a trend… then it became a trend, and now it’s out? I still love it after all this time….I’ll just wait until the style comes back around. Kind of like bell bottom jeans
Organic, natural, antique and vintage have always been my style and people have always loved my home. My wardrobe is also classics and I have invested and curated my wardrobe. I do have fun with trendy pieces by I keep them very minimal. Saves a ton of money when you buy quality.
I have seen styles come and go but I have to say that the organic/vintage/scandi is my absolute favorite. I hope it never goes out of style. The all grey trend i hated the most, and I lived in an outdated space until organic came in and finally a space that spoke to me.
@@despinakyraleos2234 I recently saw a photo of an all grey living room. If there weren’t a green plant in the room, I swore it was a black and white photo!
While I love to watch, I must say that average income families cannot afford to “follow” trends. For example, if subway tile with dark grout is out, “Oh, well,” a modest income family will continue to embrace it as is. The three rising trends mentioned, cannot even begin to afford “going there.” Love what you have, even if it isn’t hot and trendy, and care for it well. ❤
Totally, that's why it's a really great test to have curated Pinterest boards. It has really helped me determine and develop my style by looking back every few months and either confirming I still love something or occasionally asking myself, "Wow, why did I like this?" 😅
Lol exactly! I think we can follow clothing trends (if we like it) but interior design trends …noooo thanks! Gonna cost a fortune and doesn’t work for people who rent!

@@artisabode me as well. Extremely handy for moms with a LOT going on. We keep our kitchen wares minimal, so the usage and constant rotation keeps them all clean.
@@artisabode They're a pain in the arse. They only look good if you keep them organized and neat all the time, and they just collect dust and grease (grease because they're in the kitchen). It's amazing how grimy things on open shelves get, especially if they're close the stove and you actually cook.
I think it’s insane to base your major items like cabinets and flooring around “trends”. I, for one, am not changing out my gorgeous timeless marble floors so I can be “cool” LOL ALSO I always thought open shelving in a kitchen was a horrible choice.
Agree! These “experts” are out of touch with reality making their $$$ by shooting stupid opinionated videos. I laugh at them because they are trying to be relevant and they are not.
It's your house, do what you love. I painted the upper part of my bathroom walls a light gray. A few weeks later, another RUclipsr mentioned that gray is no longer the style. She wouldn't be doing that in her house. I don't care what the trend is, the gray makes me happy.
I'm all for open concept for a new build, but I cry when I see older homes destroyed by taking down walls and removing rooms. I own a circa 1930 Craftsman and I love the French doors, high baseboards and specific rooms. I have always filled my rooms with traditional English/French country design.
I don't like completely open concept at all (boring AF), but yes!!! Why buy an historical home if you're not going to respect and preserve its history? Just get a modern box, since that's what you're gonna turn it into anyway. Sharrah Stevens of Kinwoven Home painted the gorgeous original woodwork in her Victorian home white, and I wanted to cry.
@@kck9742 Completely agree!! I hadn't heard of that youtuber, but I just looked at her before and after video and I'm slightly horrified that she painted ALL the dark wood paneling white. I understand lightening a room or two so the whole house doesn't feel dark, but to paint everything white completely erases the charm of a historic home. 😕
@@kck9742 because you can afford to buy it. Or because it’s in your ideal neighborhood or price range. Maybe you love most aspects but not all. Maybe because older homes have better build quality than new ones. Lots of reasons to buy a historic or older home. You don’t have to keep everything about it. Also many older homes are severely damaged in the inside or don’t meet code. Old electrics require walls being removed. Leaking plumbing and windows. If it’s pristine condition or in a preserved neighborhood yea keep as much as possible. Otherwise it’s nice to preserve aspects but depending on your needs it’s up to the owner. We bought a historic home and kept most aspects but the bathrooms were way to small for 6’4 and 5’10 and bedrooms were ment for twin to maybe double beds. The kitchen was the smallest room. Those things changed. Everything else remained
@@kck9742 i feel you guys the house u grew up in used to have a red roof and partial brick and now it looks like it came out of a magazine if girrirs they got rid of the brick and brick planters and now is modern craftsman instead of ranch and its absolutely horrid/gothic looking
Highly recommend adding dark wood pieces but keeping lightwood floors - as someone with dark wood floors, you DO NOT want to see every single speck of dust, which is exactly what happens on dark wood floors.
An eclectic approach to interior design seems to be the safest bet because you can draw on so many elements that are not just one style. Going all in on one specific style I think is what dates quicker.
Gonna push back on the stacked subway tiles. Had a definite start date and will have an end date for that reason. Subway tiles installed like subway tiles with a neutral grout have been in since ancient Rome, so I trust it.
I was just about to comment this! I think white subway tiles laid horizontally are and have always been considered a classic. They will never go out of style or look dated!
We are building a new home and when we told our draftsman we did not want completely open concept, he said we were the fourth clients to request the living area separate from the kitchen recently. So, yes, separate rooms as my children are older are the way we are going!
Unnoticed glass plate on stove top, stove turned on, glass slivers across open plan kitchen dining and lounge. With toddlers it was mega challenge, only fortunate that had tiled floor! I greatly appreciate a separate kitchen.
That's what I have always said. I have no idea why people want to set up shop basically in their kitchen. When it's time to get cozy and relax I don't want to see my kitchen sink or refrigerator.
Interesting ideas but what stands out to me, who has been around for quite a few decades, is that everything new is what was old and out of date. From colors to materials to designs, we've seen it before, done it before, and moved onto something new before. The decade might change, but there is a basic reality to be considered: How you use a space, what you need to make it work for you, what you don't need, and how much work (money) you want to invest in it not only to install it but to maintain it. I recently watched another RUclipsr install loads of marble into a revamped kitchen. Beautiful yes, but I would bet money there was no thought about the amount of maintenance involved long term.
Everything was spot on except for the last point about wood tones, specifically in flooring. I think the same sandy/lighter wood tones that would popular last year are staying popular, and we are not seeing a shift back to dark wood flooring.
I agree. I haven't seen evidence of a trend toward darker wood. Everyone I've seen building a new house or moving into a new house is going lighter. In fact they're all starting to look a little cookie cutter because everybody is going for that light wood, neutral tone furniture look.
I hope this one isn't true because not only do I strongly prefer light wood, but my house is light wood and I need to sell in a couple years lol! I will always prefer the light airy look
Good thing I’ve been too broke to do that all white open concept kitchen with subway tile, maybe if I wait long enough, 90s contractor grade kitchen will be in vogue lol
I have to say, when it comes to your home but ESPECIALLY your kitchen, do what YOU love. Kitchen remodels are one of the, if not, THE most expensive part of your home to remodel. To follow a trend now that will t be in next year or the next, just isn’t smart. Do what you love and will love for years to come, despite the trends.
me too, I just renovated a small one bedroom apartment and picked mainly light wood tones. Maybe for huge spaces dark wood is ok, but for normal European apartments, no way.
All very interesting and well-illustrated! I agree that if a style is working for you and you like it, there is absolutely no reason to do away with it. I personally liked almost every single example of a painted or papered accent wall that you showed as examples of out-of-style trends, and would keep them if they were in my home.
I fell in love with a particular style? Era? When I was in my late teens early 20s over the last 30 years I have slowly collected items and furniture from it, few people recognize but my art deco inspired home is strangely enough considered timeless.
'It's going to get lonely for awhile, 'till everyone else comes back in style" 🎶🎵🎼 Viva Voce (the band). That's why I aim for timeless. It always comes back.
Nothing is worst than when you’re trying to watch TV or relax in the living room & someone is being noisy in the kitchen. Open floor times are nice occasionally but not everyday!
I am African and I have come up with a new terminology. Afripan. The colours of Africa and the minimalism of Japan. You heard it on this channel first.
I love the floating shelves, but when I think of how cluttered it looks and how sticky your dishes can become with all the steam, even with very regular cleaning, I decided against it. I had my husband put up two small shelves away from the stove for my plants.
I just had a client call me for a kitchen redesign because of this girls videos and one from another RUclips design influencer KB or whatever. I don’t comment on RUclips but it’s frustrating to see It really is a trend epidemic right now and these videos are a big effect on that. I’ve been in this business for over 18 years as a contractor and some styles get dated yes but I have never seen the pace these trends are changing at and these designers like this woman are to blame for videos like this. A lot of clients I know have lost thousands of dollars and you can’t tell them nothing because they’ve been programmed to think it’s the new thing. Unbelievable.
Great video! It clearly illustrates that it is of utmost importance to do what "everyone" is doing, as it was worded. If you have unique ideas of your own....throw them away immediately! Listen only to people like this. It's the only way. As a species we must achieve absolute conformity, and finally extinguish all that troublesome individuality. Bah humbug to that ancient thinking, amirite? Plus, it gives you the wonderful opportunity to spend a hundred grand to renovate your kitchen and bathrooms when that last fad has ended. Bonus! Oddly, they end mainly because "everyone" was doing it. That is inconvenient information for me right now. I'll just forget I ever knew that. Also: for those putting all matt black fixtures in your home, great choice! You're totally not gonna regret that in a year, since now even people whose homes have wheels adore that delightful style. That black finish is rock solid! Won't ever chip, flake, or peel. I swear it. NEVER worry about the future, longevity, and what suits your own individual expression. That's cornball style, yo. Instead, follow the leader. We are good at that. And it's so simple. Just, don't think.
Design and trends are good for those who love it. I like to look at it but I have a permanent home and I say I love the look I love wether in style or not. I'm the one living in my house and I like to be surrounded by the things I love. You have a beautiful home and design is beautiful but I personally don't follow trend or style. If you planning on selling the house eventually probably should stay in style boundaries. I want my home to be a home I love the things around me. 😊🌹💞
This was a helpful video for anyone that might be in the process of decorating a space - handy to know what might be a little dated before you make big purchase decisions. As always with this type of video though, none of us are required to follow or avoid certain design styles. It's all optional! Kirsten mentioned all light wood, but I have and love that in my space, and that's totally fine. : )
I think it’s also good to know what you may have a hard time finding. For example, I had the hardest time finding tile that was more on the brown side for my kitchen floor because grey tiles have been popular for so long. On the flip side, if you like say art deco style and art deco is trending, then you’ll have an easier time finding items you like.
I hope with whole my heart that pants with holes are going out of style asap! :-) Anyway, I don't follow styles, at least not on purpose. It could be that I purchase something that at that moment is in fashion, but I just keep it for ages when I like it.
Some styles just don't seem to fade away -- like grey furniture, low rise jeans, jeans with holes, and with legs so skinny it's a struggle to peal them off over your heels.
There is another You Tuber that redid her kitchen last year. She put about 5 shelves from counter to ceiling on both sides of her kitchen sink and when it was done she put a few decorative items on the shelves and it look attractive. Unfortunately within a month each shelf was packed with everything from spices to mixing bowls to random items. Every time I see them now I just feel so sad about how it looks.
When we bought our house there were other homes where they had knocked down every wall so it was completely open plan. I chose the house with a separate front room and dining room. I like to entertain and I don’t like having everyone watch me mess up the cooking. It’s also nice to have separate rooms with kids.
I can't keep up with how fast the "trends" change! How do people have the money to change their furniture, flooring, walls, etc. every season?? Either way, I like your vibe Kristen and you've taught me a lot about home design :)
I am an architect and totally disagree with the concept that open plan spaces are out and closed small rooms are in. The open plan area may not be for everyone but the concept of creating a bigger airy light space is timeless
Totally agree on the shiny things. Never liked it. I would never ever stack the subway tiles vertical, that will be dated much sooner than the horisontal ones. I would rather change the grouting. Here in Scandinavia, white kitchens and light woodtones will never be out of style. We need the light into our homes, because of the long dark winters.
Same here, I just renovated a small one bedroom apartment and picked mainly light wood tones. Darker items are rather accents.Maybe for huge spaces dark wood is ok, but for normal European apartments, no way.
I mix my wood tones.. I love lighter wood floors & medium to dark tone furniture, I find it timeless & I love that the floor always looks beautiful even when it's not clean
I would love to see you do a video on Modern English Cottage style! It’s definitely the style I have currently started in my home but every time I look for cottage inspo it’s either “farmhouse”🤢 or super frilly pastel cottage core. I would love to achieve that classic English elegance with an warm organic cozy feeling. Pride and Prejudice meets Hobbit house with a modern twist😅
The thing with trends is that everything you showed in this video will be out of style in 6 months. What about buying good quality furniture/decor and keeping it for years? I think it’s called classic because it withstands the test of time.
Maybe it’s me, but I don’t understand why people would care about these trends. Just do what you like and don’t bother about the trends. Why would you change your house every time cause it is ‘out of trend’?
I'm about to build an open concept home and I can't wait because my homes have always had me shut away in a closed off kitchen during the Holidays while everyone else is having a great time in the livingroom. There's NOTHING great about a bunch of closed off rooms.
I did white subway tile with a light gray grout. But I did not use the 3 x 6 tiles. Instead I used 3 x 12 in the kitchen and 4 x 12 in the bathroom. I think it made a big difference to not use the smaller tiles.
Following what is "in and on-trend" and "what is out" is like following a moving target. I am renovating within my budget and following what makes me happy in my space.
This is great. I just moved into a home which l thought was a bit dated due to: lack of open plan, no gloss anything, dark as opposed to light wood. Seems like it's all back on trend! Haha seriously though, it's ridiculous, everything seems to be going in and out of fashion at lightening speed. Who has the money to change their flooring, kitchen or doors all the time etc..
I always love your videos and ideas, Kristen. I do think it’s important to stick with the classics when it comes to expensive and time consuming renovations, like flooring and cabinetry. Trends come and go so quickly these days. Lighter colored flooring has been all the rage for what…maybe a year at most? Now, it’s trending out again? Go classic and keep it simple. If I like a trend, I buy a couple accent pieces. That way it’s not so expensive to change it up in the future.
You’re one of my favourite designers and I love your ideas. The thing with styles if they come and go when you have to think about if somethings functions for you and your family it may be doesn’t matter if it’s in style or not that’s just my opinion. No one can afford to revamp their space all the time. However that being said I think you have some great concepts here
Kristen did say if it is functional for you and you like it by all means keep it. There are always little things we can do to update our homes without a total remodel.
I don't necessarily think the video is telling everyone we need to "revamp" our homes every few years and more for the people either renovating their home currently, maybe to try and sell it at top dollar. Or maybe for someone building their new home from scratch and needing inspiration. Trends are always changing every few years. That's why homes built in the 60s and 70s LOOK like they were built in the 60s and 70s lol. But anyways, I think this video is simply meant to be inspo and guidance for those looking for it. Not meant to shame anyone or tell someone who just renovated 5 years ago and loves their home that they need to take a sledgehammer to it and start from scratch haha
For the past 5 years I have been encouraging people to get away from open concept layouts. Some separation is a good thing. Same with all white and gray kitchens and shiplap. The thing is, incorporating parts and pieces of all the “out” elements can be quite interesting when you mix things up correctly. Stay away from trends in general and select things that reflect you, your personality, your lifestyle, and what you are drawn to. Carbon copy design falls flat.
Why would you encourage people to get away from open concept? It is like encouraging them to chose a partner that you think is best. To me it isnt a trend. It is a logical layout for the way our family functions and feels. Others might feel differently, that is perfectly fine, but why encourage them to do one or another?
I agree. A full open concept is not something good for humans mentally. Rooms change our mental dispositions. They allow us to switch from one mode to another and function with purpose.
I think open concepts work exactly when she mentioned. I have small children and do not have an open concept but really, really wish I did. I can't watch the kids while I'm cooking in the kitchen and have had so many preventable accdients occur because I couldn't see what was happening.
I cannot keep up with the do's n don'ts of decor, my financial situation cannot... but, the painting i did during the summer is clutch enough for me.. it is clean, all that matters to me.
I like to see people adhere to their own personal style rather than trends, however I think some things are so overdone and wildly popular during a particular time period and when you go to resell your home, a buyer can guess when the last time you renovated your kitchen based on trendy design choices you made. You don't want a buyer to say "They remodeled the kitchen in 2013 didn't they?" because you want to leave the buyer guessing. To make them think it could've been remodeled last year.
If I ever own a house, everything will be optimized for durability, ease of use, and ease of cleaning. I want it to be beautiful, but don't really care about trends. The space just has to work for me. I'd never have open shelving because items collect dust, nor would I have a trendy counter top that was made of a high maintenance material.
Open concept really didn’t work during Covid. I’m a single person, and when I redid my kitchen, everyone and their mother wanted to knock out the wall between the dining room and my beautiful galley kitchen but I refused. So glad I did! I really like the distinction of having a dining room, and not having to look at the kitchen 24 seven even though it’s beautiful. Each room has its own comfort, elegance & function.
Keep saving for light color floors they hide dust better than dark floors. Dark ones always look dirty to me. Go dark higher up like table tops, shelves or cabinets.
Open shelving is a no especially over the stove. Grease, smoke and cooking spray all over your shelf and clean dishes is gross. Not to mention the shelves will get dusty being out in the open.
These trends are so cutting edge that I don't even like most of them yet LOL The overall vibe that these 2023 shifts have in common is just bringing in more warmth and natural elements into your home as I agree it seems we are for the most part done with all of these grey and cool tones. There are many ways to achieve that without doing any majoy renovations - that is where the simple paint and decor side of things comes into play :)
I am not a follow trends person but I do think there are always “ golden nuggets “ of good thoughts. I like the idea of a gallery wall. I agree with the floating shelves… those always look like cluttered to me. I disagree with the open floor plan. I like the easy flow when family and friends gather. Thanks for the video!
.....I don't " follow trends ", but I LIKE some open shelving in the kitchen and bathroom, ...it adds some style to all that " closed cabinetry ". I've used open shelving in certain areas, decades before it was ' popular '. I'm also the woman that's been shopping at Thrift Stores / Second hand stores since ...High School. 50 years ago. ..... I've also not ever been a fan of the " open concept " Floorplan, ... having a balance is good, because " not everything should be able to be seen " with all the open concept. The thing with Subway Tile is the ease of cleaning and affordability. ...not everyone can afford fancy tiles that you mentioned.
I abhor the open concept. Cooking and baking are stress relievers for me and sometimes I wish I could shut half doors or something to get privacy lol I too have always done the 2nd hand in sustainability.
My philosophy is to take your style cues from your home architecture, a 60’s ranch style is perfect for modern minimalism and a Queen Anne works great for the traditional grand millennial. Sure you can probably make any style work in a home but you are going to end up spending a lot more money to make it look authentic.
Dear Kristen, your videos are such a great inspiration for me, because I am now entering a phase in my life, in which the children are grown up. That means my husband and I will soon have our house just for the two of us. It will be great fun to redecorate the house (no renovation needed) and use the space all for ourselves. As soon as our son has moved out (probably next year), I will occupy his room. I am thinking of an office with a huge comfortable armchair to read and take a little nap every now and then. I also have a colour scheme in mind, but I am not quite sure if this could work: white, off-white, beige and frosted pink with a wooden floor and a rug in whatever colour fits into that. To cut a long story short: How can you include a colour like frosted pink / baby pink into the room of an adult woman without having the feeling of entering (old) Barbie’s office? Have you got any ideas for “female” offices that are comfy but a proper workplace with a PC desk and place for a printer at the same time? Greetings from Germany Marion
I’m so glad to hear farmhouse is going out. I never liked it but every single DIY RUclipsr only made farmhouse decor. It got so old and most of it I didn’t care about cause it was so obviously farmhouse. Hopefully this means we’ll get some new (not farmhouse) DIY videos! I don’t mind the decor for others, but it wasn’t for me and I wish those DIYers made content for all kinds of styles and not just farmhouse over and over again.
Thank you for the amazing videos Would like to learn about the hardwood color that matches each decor style. Ex.what is the best for english cottage, what the best for french country or the European farmhouse etc Also what is your personal preference and recommendation regarding the full white hardwood Thanks again
As someone who put grey faux wood floors in my home in 2015, PLEASE don’t do trends lol. Natural finishes can be worked with SO much easier than a grey tone or a dark wood tone. That’s an investment you can’t just up and change every couple of years, so I would advise a neutral wood floor, with warm or cool tones according to your comfort and style.
Great information! But in my opinion, decorate in what you love 💕. I was lucky enough to buy a home before it was constructed and was able to pick my colors and styles. 23 years later my style has come and go but I still love it!
Trends and in/out of style is always difficult to argue. I think you did some great work and you will not be able to get everyone on board with your perspective, but it is perfectly normal. I appreciate the content and your perspective as a designer. I think you did great to point out the things to avoid that are costly and go out of style, such as backsplash, cabinets sheen, flooring, etc. I think what people struggle in is to coordinate everything together, and cause dated looks. I personally love farmhouse looks and feel it is timeless, such as shiplap. But you are right that it needs to be somewhat more of the accent than the general theme for most homes. If it is a 100 year old house in the country, I would go for 75% farmhouse look. For my rather recent house, I intend to mix in english cottage with modern farmhouse. Colors also do a lot of the difference in feel. Anyway, sorry for the long comment, I appreciate your work and continue to follow your videos. They help a bunch especially as they target normal people wanting to improve their living space, not the overly rich who can give a open account to a designer.
HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE! I hope this video gives you some updated interior design ideas for your next renovation or decorating project!! Enjoy!!
Happy Sunday ❤
How does the design world determine what is currently on trend? Do they go back 20 years and update older styles like clothing fashion does?

I never pay attention to styles and trends. I do what I like in our home. It doesn't matter what the styles and trends are.
What's trendy right now won't be in about 6 months anyway, so trying to keep up is a lost cause.
Exactly. We did an accent wall with gorgeous light wood. Now, because someone deems it out, let's remove it. Use your own mind.
Hamster wheel is the perfect analogy.
I think its because of the attention span of younger people! Lije a gnat!
I agree, create a home you love , because you're the one going to be living in it. If it makes you happy then it's perfect.
I subscribe and like her suggestions, but I've reached the stage where I'm now into "my own trend!"
Yes Ma’am!
Yes I agree
I think my style is “consignment shop-art nouveau-museum paintings”.
Kristen, I absolutely love your hair! The blend of blonde platinum colours, and the soft waves are gorgeous.
That’s the way to be!!! Trends are just other people telling you what to do, nope, I can make my own decisions
The floating shelves look great as long as they are not cluttered with things. Also, the dust that will collect on plates and cups is major on open shelving. Closed cabinets keep your dishware covered and dust free.
I agree. Kiva Brent has recommended glass cabinets if you love the open look but not dust. I thought it was a good alternative.
I agree! Love my subway tile and it’ll always be a classic that comes back!
@@gogi682 everything you mentioned is pretty timeless. it will always look good.
Trying to keep up with “trends” is insanity. While I think paying attention is good, finding things you love with an eye on classics makes so much more sense. That way, you can refresh less expensive items periodically & still have a great look. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks I was just going to say this even tho so far, I apparently haven't"sinnd" yet 😅
Yessss to this !!
Totally agree! I like to do my own thing with classic style.
Yes! Everything that is “trendy” now will be outdated in 2 years.
And the influencers basically work for them.
Trends come and go, but basics last forever, that’s my philosophy 🎉
Exactly.
Exactly -- decorate your home in the way that makes you happy.
Definitely!
Same here! I find what works for me and because they’ve become classics even if they aren’t as trendy I know they’ll always come back.
@@jenniferelyse5134 it is a money saver for sure.
you can paint or re-stain grout if it bothers you, but you don't want to or can't afford to replace it 😄
Totally, that's why it's a really great test to have curated Pinterest boards. It has really helped me determine and develop my style by looking back every few months and either confirming I still love something or occasionally asking myself, "Wow, why did I like this?" 😅
I don't have enough money to do trends. I just keep it clean and simple.
Lol exactly! I think we can follow clothing trends (if we like it) but interior design trends …noooo thanks! Gonna cost a fortune and doesn’t work for people who rent!
I’ve had all these things……twice, so the lesson is keep what you love, it will come round again. 😀
Dark wood light wood never matters. Wood is a timeless material so it baffles me when someone says a wood color is outdated lol.

I don’t really like the open shelf look, besides my family would not take the time, to put dishes correctly, it is a accident waiting to Happen 🤕
I love open shelves lol
@@artisabode me as well. Extremely handy for moms with a LOT going on. We keep our kitchen wares minimal, so the usage and constant rotation keeps them all clean.
@@artisabode They're a pain in the arse. They only look good if you keep them organized and neat all the time, and they just collect dust and grease (grease because they're in the kitchen). It's amazing how grimy things on open shelves get, especially if they're close the stove and you actually cook.
@@kck9742 I guess but it adds a nice ring to it for me
I think it’s insane to base your major items like cabinets and flooring around “trends”. I, for one, am not changing out my gorgeous timeless marble floors so I can be “cool” LOL
ALSO I always thought open shelving in a kitchen was a horrible choice.
Yes Yes YES!
Yeah they get cussed tf out every single time they say something so stupid lol
I agree open shelves in a kitchen are ridiculous,
and decorative open shelves scream,
"Nobody here knows how to cook or bake."
I tried canvas tan since l was told gray is out. Absolutely hated it and repainted gray.
Sounds lovely! You’re so lucky! 😊
@@kck9742 i feel you guys the house u grew up in used to have a red roof and partial brick and now it looks like it came out of a magazine if girrirs they got rid of the brick and brick planters and now is modern craftsman instead of ranch and its absolutely horrid/gothic looking
I've had dark deep walnut kitchen cabinets since i bought my house. Waited long enough, and now it's on trend lol
Highly recommend adding dark wood pieces but keeping lightwood floors - as someone with dark wood floors, you DO NOT want to see every single speck of dust, which is exactly what happens on dark wood floors.
Yep, I had very dark wood floors in my last home and they were a nightmare to keep clean. They showed every spec of dust and dirt
I always thought floating shelves looked cluttered lol. But I like shiny. I like what I like and don’t really care if it’s on trend!
An eclectic approach to interior design seems to be the safest bet because you can draw on so many elements that are not just one style. Going all in on one specific style I think is what dates quicker.
Totally agree. Especially bc I like a little bit of a few different styles and am keen most on one particular “style.”
Precisely. The Tuscan look of the early 2000's is a perfect example of your point.
Which ironically is what I see in most design influencer homes.
Trends are hard to keep up with like technology...I say do what you love and like, trends will come and go, do you❣️
Gonna push back on the stacked subway tiles.
Agree.
The heck with trends, design the home you love & full it with love!
My house is kinda of between...my husband would like even more open..no..I wish I had more walls. I love separate spaces.
I always say, knocking down a wall is like getting rid of a room - you need the wall space! It's that important.
If I am relaxing in my living room the last thing I want to see is all the mess in the kitchen if it's not cleaned up right away!
I’ve never thought about my house being in or out of style. It’s who I am and what I love, that’s always “in style” for me.
We won't go back to super dark floors until the next generation of suckers is born. They show every bit of dust!!!
I don’t think anything she said was spot on. None of that.
I don't know who comes up with this stuff, I want my house to work for me. So in style or out, I'm going to go with what works for me.
honestly i feel like trends dont really matter. just do what you want and keep it as long as you want, same with fashion
I agree with most of it. I still like lighter wood tones rather than darker because for me, dark wood tones gives me a vibe of a more somber space.
me too, I just renovated a small one bedroom apartment and picked mainly light wood tones. Maybe for huge spaces dark wood is ok, but for normal European apartments, no way.
I can't STAND dark brown kitchen cabinets. I just can't. Nothing makes a kitchen darker and more depressing to me.
All very interesting and well-illustrated! I agree that if a style is working for you and you like it, there is absolutely no reason to do away with it. I personally liked almost every single example of a painted or papered accent wall that you showed as examples of out-of-style trends, and would keep them if they were in my home.
@KristenMcGowan are you aware there are scammers like the above person pretending to be you and giving away "prizes"?
Sounds very interesting.😄
People usually do exactly that - don’t think.
We recently updated, remodeled and added space to our home. And, I must say we went with some open shelving, not too much but I still do love it.
👍
Some styles just don't seem to fade away -- like grey furniture, low rise jeans, jeans with holes, and with legs so skinny it's a struggle to peal them off over your heels.
There is another You Tuber that redid her kitchen last year. She put about 5 shelves from counter to ceiling on both sides of her kitchen sink and when it was done she put a few decorative items on the shelves and it look attractive. Unfortunately within a month each shelf was packed with everything from spices to mixing bowls to random items. Every time I see them now I just feel so sad about how it looks.
...and dust.
When we bought our house there were other homes where they had knocked down every wall so it was completely open plan. I chose the house with a separate front room and dining room. I like to entertain and I don’t like having everyone watch me mess up the cooking. It’s also nice to have separate rooms with kids.
If you like to follow trends, may I suggest more temporary ways to follow them? Having to replace permanent fixtures frequently can be very costly.
Or how about, think for yourself and do what YOU like and not what RUclipsrs tell you you should be doing?
So glad my dark kitchen cabinets are back in style. I've always loved them!
7:41 If something is timeless, it doesn’t go out of style, that’s the point
I knew if I waited long enough my beautiful cappuccino colored cabinets would be back in style .
😉
🤣👏🏼
They change so the stores can make money
Right. They want to gaslight you into thinking your house is dated. Give me a break!
I'm about to build an open concept home and I can't wait because my homes have always had me shut away in a closed off kitchen during the Holidays while everyone else is having a great time in the livingroom. There's NOTHING great about a bunch of closed off rooms.
Yes, open concept is still the best for entertaining for sure
I just do what I love and never look at what's in or not. But I love the way we try more natural looks in this age. Natural and peaceful for the eye.
I love all white kitchens
I decorate with what I like and makes me feel happy. I appreciate your videos. However changing all the time is not economical. 😊
However that being said I think you have some great concepts here
Even if you could afford revamping, you should not have to or should not feel forced to do it.
Always happy to try and keep up with the current. I enjoy my home and won't be changing up to much, but I always want to be kept in the loop! TFS
For me as long as you're comfortable and you love your home that's all that matters
I think covid has helped kill open concept. After so much "togetherness" I think people wanted to run and hide from each other!!
@@carolinet7021One day very soon they will be a little older and you will be happy for the separation. They will be even happier 😂
I cannot keep up with the do's n don'ts of decor, my financial situation cannot... but, the painting i did during the summer is clutch enough for me.. it is clean, all that matters to me.
TREND equals SPEND.
Period.
My spoise and I designed and built our home from the ground up---there is a TREND you can follow for true satisfaction
Enjoyed this video and it was interesting.I feel one’s home style is whatever you like.❤
I knew if I waited long enough my dark brown furniture would come back in fashion 😂😂😂
I’m so happy cottage and dark wood are coming in. Exactly my vibe, and it’ll be nice to more easily fine pieces!
But …. In six months it will be something different. Go with what is YOU. What YOU love.
Here I am still saving my money for my light hardwood floor. Styles are changing so fast that regular people can't possibly afford to keep up.
Keep saving for light color floors they hide dust better than dark floors. Dark ones always look dirty to me. Go dark higher up like table tops, shelves or cabinets.
Don't go dark or light -- go for a classic mid-tone floor. That's playing it safe!
Open shelving is a no especially over the stove. Grease, smoke and cooking spray all over your shelf and clean dishes is gross. Not to mention the shelves will get dusty being out in the open.
These trends are so cutting edge that I don't even like most of them yet LOL
The overall vibe that these 2023 shifts have in common is just bringing in more warmth and natural elements into your home as I agree it seems we are for the most part done with all of these grey and cool tones. There are many ways to achieve that without doing any majoy renovations - that is where the simple paint and decor side of things comes into play :)
Subway tile backsplash will never be out of style. Horizontal not vertical
I just had this small revelation kind of moment and it feels almost sad that we follow the ever-changing trends, for so many reasons.
Yes you go girl!
My philosophy is to take your style cues from your home architecture, a 60’s ranch style is perfect for modern minimalism and a Queen Anne works great for the traditional grand millennial. Sure you can probably make any style work in a home but you are going to end up spending a lot more money to make it look authentic.
This video is hilarious. Literally everything that has been on style the last 5 years is now done. 😂
Hey, people gotta sell new crap and make money, shhhhh🤫
Dear Kristen,
your videos are such a great inspiration for me, because I am now entering a phase in my life, in which the children are grown up.

I’m so glad to hear farmhouse is going out. I never liked it but every single DIY RUclipsr only made farmhouse decor. It got so old and most of it I didn’t care about cause it was so obviously farmhouse. Hopefully this means we’ll get some new (not farmhouse) DIY videos! I don’t mind the decor for others, but it wasn’t for me and I wish those DIYers made content for all kinds of styles and not just farmhouse over and over again.
Its so Odd to me that interior design shifts whats trendy ever year like its clothes...
Yes to the point that now there is fast furniture and fast decor. The consumerism culture is getting out of hand.
It’s business
Thank you for the amazing videos
Would like to learn about the hardwood color that matches each decor style.
Ex.what is the best for english cottage, what the best for french country or the European farmhouse etc
Also what is your personal preference and recommendation regarding the full white hardwood
Thanks again
Agree on the open shelving in kitchen. Im a practical person which has served me very well in life.
I've never liked open plan. No privacy, lose heat etc
Keeping it classy, is better than any 'trend'
Just do what YOU like! No one's influence should force you to change what YOU want.
