How to DRILL PAPER OR CARDSTOCK- BEST METHOD!!

- Here's the method I came up with to create a hole in thick card stock booklets that are held together with a metal ring. A few months ago, my wife presented me with the challenge of finding a way to punch or drill a hole through thick card stock booklets. Some of the booklets would be up to 1" thick and there were going to be a total of at least 150 or them. Thanks for watching! Please share, like and all that good stuff...it really helps!

This is the reason I love RUclips. Learning from other people's trials and errors! Thanks for showing us how you did it!
Thanks man, yeah it is an amazing time to be alive with all of this information being shared!
i know it is pretty randomly asking but do anybody know of a good place to stream newly released movies online ?
@Russell Duke Flixportal :P
@Yehuda Damari thanks, I went there and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :D Appreciate it !!
@Russell Duke You are welcome :)
The upper plate i made from 4 mm steel. Then clamped this very very tight.
Yes, i had this problem in the 70s. We had to produce books for a students seminar.
You are on the right way!
Cheerio from Germany.
Best method - all you need is this 6 figure woodworking shop and good mood!!!
Thank so much! (The how-TO starts about 3 min. into the video.) I would think if you don't have a drill press, then locking the setup into a vice would be helpful. Seamstresses keep scissors STRICTLY for fabric...not cutting paper with them as it ruins it for the fabric. I would suspect that keeping a bit reserved strictly for this purpose would likewise serve well. Thanks again!
Apparently adding wax paper before your first sheet can help a lot as well
Thank to you and everyone who does the experimenting for the rest of us!
O wow, what a Godsend, I have been looking around bookbinders to get holes drilled into my many thousand cards, of which I am making bunting.. this is perfect. Thank you so much for sharing this video.
A brad point bit and a guide template pressing down on top. Brilliant! The WD40 tip is a good hint too! Thanks man.
Thanks so much for the tip. Im sure they all appreciated these booklets.
Thanks guy. I was searching for this. Thanks for thoughtful and sharing it for others. How can I describe it? humanity?, helpfulness?, philanthropy?. selfless & considerate etc. Really helpful. Great.
Thank you so much for this... I just ordered 2000 tags with no holes, for product hang tags, and we had been manually hole punching them (a much small set if them ) Knowing this will work is reassuring haha Thanks!
I never thought there will be a video on this topic when I decided to drill through 300 gsm watercolour paper (thick ) to put a ring through and make watercolour sketchbooks. I decided to search on youtube anyway. Thank you for making this video . and yes I love youtube too for the same reason another person mentioned in the comments..
Thanks for the tip! We expanded on it to 3hole drill many shop manuals to put in loose leaf binders. Worked great!
Good solve, definitely something I could use in the back pocket. Never know when that'll come in handy. Thanks!
Glad to pass this along and that it might come in handy one day, Caleb! Thanks for watching!!
Vintage Wood Workshop of course, glad you did a video on it. When I saw it in the other vid I was thinking it didn't quite seem like anything I'd seen before.
Thank you for your thorough explanation. I appreciate your sharing what you tried first and along the way until you found what worked best. That is helpful for us who might think, I'll just try 'x' (like standard drill bit LOL). I learned of a new tool, the brad point bit. I will buy one for my paper drilling project. I am sure I'll find this type of bit works better in situations I would previously produce poor quality holes with a standard bit as the only tool in my arsenal. Thank You!
I thought before I tried to drill into some card stock lets see if anyone has done this before and there you were. Great tip mate!
Awesome! What a thorough explanation! I could see using a standard electric drill could be tricky, but do you think it’s possible, as I do not have a drill press?
Awesome tricks and video. Thank you so much Vintage Wood Workshop. Please post more videos
Great work my friend !!! this idea have a lot of uses !! thanks for sharing !!!
Thanks, Kostas!! Glad it may have been helpful to you in the future!!
I just did this yesterday to my son's notebook for school. I did see Diresta's video a while ago (but I didn't remember that technique)... I wish I would have seen your video yesterday. Anyway, good stuff here!
Thanks Matt, sorry you didn't see it sooner! glad to be able to contribute to the knowledge that's out there. Very cool to learn from each other's trials and errors for sure
Great video, because it's clear and shows some steps along the way. You suggest using WD40 on the bit which isn't shown in the video. I think it's worth a try, but I'll try spray silicone lube so it doesn't stain or cause the user problems.
Very useful video.
Cool tip, thank you. It's that a Svengoolie t-shirt you're rocking?
Good you earned brownie points with the wife! I'm going to use your process, but will clamp the top and lower in hope of minimising deformity. Thanks!
Great, thanks and good luck!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Simple and practical. congratulations.
Print shops have a very sharp stainless bits and machines that do 3 holes or less at a time. They use beeswax as a lube to keep down the heat. You can get beeswax in sticks and pucks
Dude, that was super useful...great test and idea....!!!
Thanks man, appreciate you checking it out! maybe it'll come in handy one day!
This is what I’ve been looking for! I’m going to be drilling a hole in my note book, so I can add a padlock to it
Great! Thanks for showing the wrong experiments too - very helpful!
great job buddy nice tip thanks for sharing. you must have put a lot of time into those.
hey, happy wife, happy life...haha...thanks man!!
Thank you very much!
thanks for posting this.
it worked great for me.
I needed to 'drill' 3 x 1/8" holes in the 8-1/2" paper side of 100 pages or so.
- I used bar soap instead of the wd40.
- I clamped the sandwich boards tightly.
- I used the highest speed on my hand drill and pressed lightly ie I let the speed do the cutting.
- I used a single edge razor to flush trim the first and last page holes of the stack.
simple books - love it
Shogun-Jimi thanks man!!! appreciate the support my friend👍👍
Good tip I'll have to remember this one.
Thanks Dan, was hoping some would find this useful. Take care man!
Thank you, beutiful video, will try it out. What was the name you mentioned in the beginning? Jimmy..? Need to understand something
What an awesome husband to do this, especially for a teacher!
Great tip!
woodworker 631 thank you brother!!
Very creative,A paper drilling machine will help a lot!
Thank u for video
Great tip
Thanks, appreciate the comment my friend!
Great, if you add a toggle clamp to your jig, your hand won’t get tired from holding down the upper plate.
Thanks
Thank youbso much was wondering how i was going to get holes through my paper for journal
Sir use some g-clamp. It's very easy and useful.
Thanks so much for this.
Nice video, didn't even know you could drill successfully through paper
Angel's Tinkering Corner thank you, Angel! glad I could show you a new technique! I was checking out your channel the other day and I've been meaning to get back there and learn some more about 3d printing. definitely something in interested in learning my friend
Vintage Wood Workshop Thanks, I am not as good teaching as you are but I do my best to share some info here and there. Nowadays 3D printers are pretty cheap and you could buy one to play with. 3D printer kits are even cheaper and by building one, you will learn a lot about the mechanics and electronics of it. It opens a whole new world of opportunities.
Thanks 🤩
Thanks for your video! I have a question. Do you have an idea how to drill a bigger hole to paper? Maybe around 7 centimertes diameter. Thank you!
Hi,
I would like to ask if you have holes without embossed edges on the other side. I can't drill holes without these deformations. I drill holes in screw photo albums → bookbinding cardboard with a width of 2.4 mm and inside photo cardboard weighing 300 g / m2. The total width of the album's spine is 2-3 cm. Do you have a wood drill or a paper-specific drill? Thank you and greetings Radka
Thank you ❤️👍🏽
Thank you
Thanks dude,
I'm currently building a titanic model, the shell plating was done with gloss cardboard, now I need too drill port holes in and the cardboard top keeps tearing out around the bit,
Any advice on how I can drill them?
Mr Hyde try clamping real tight, sandwiching material with scrap blocks of wood if possible...but may be tough if curved.
good to know. did the wd40 leave any stains on the card stock?
That was a worry of mine, but no it didn't. I just sprayed it once, then wiped off any excess with a rag and it made a big difference in paper adhesion (if that's what you call it) to the bit. Thanks for watching man!
What kind of drill bit you are using?
Why not use a drill for paper?
👏👏👏👏👍👍👍
I did it myself with the Woodglut plans. I think this is the best way to find out how to build it.
I prefer to build with woodprix plans.
