I've bought instruments for both of my kids, but my daughter just decided she wants to sing, which I encourage, as well, and my son is focusing on welding school at the moment, but I'm still trying to teach him guitar. Just gave my neices' cousin a little Squier practice amp to help get her started on guitar (she moved in with them, and said wanted to play electric guitar one day), I'm gonna let her learn on a Frankenstein Ibanez RG I'm building. It's cool to share music with people, especially if it's something that changes their life for the better.

Hi - I just want to add a note about chokes: They can be polarized. I have about 40 years experience laying out printed circuit boards (ya I'm now an old retired guy lol) both analog and digital. One product I was a designer on was connected to the user's telephone line. A customer complained to our service department that they heard a cow moo whenever they used their phone after our product was installed. We sent one of our EEs to the site who verified it was happening. It was finally isolated to the digital switching power supply on the circuit board. I contacted the manufacturer of the integrated circuit that was the basis for the supply - they had provided pcb layout instructions for the supply and I had followed them exactly. But they told me they had neglected to show the polarity of the choke in the circuit. Wait the what? The coke had no polarity marking on it. We got together with the choke manufacturer and they said "Oh - ya they're polarized but usually it doesn't matter". So they ended up marking their parts to show the "start lead". It has to do with which way the choke is wound. Problem solved. I suspect in your applications it wouldn't matter. But in our circuit it resulted in an audio tone being generated. None of our EEs had ever heard (sorry - bad pun) of this before but live and learn.

Enjoyed this video and hearing about some of your more personal insights which made me smile. Being a fellow vintage audio repair tech and have been into audio since I was a kid (nearly 50 now) its so refreshing to see your passion and enthusiasm in repairing vintage amps. We certainly need more people like you taking the reins when us old techs can't do it anymore. Definitely want to see more woman stepping into this industry so hopefully this will encourage others to do so. Keep up the good work Collen, oh and we almost share the same birthday mine is a couple of days after yours! 😀👍 All the best for 2024.

talking about your van reminded me of my childhood. back in the 1970's, my parents would take me to the mall and there would be floor model conversion vans there with the doors open so you could get inside and look around. this was the heyday of the "sin bin," when big conversion vans were really popular.
you would drool if you could see how luxurious those vans were back then. every surface carpeted. big plush swivel chairs. it was a living room on wheels. and the outside was cool too. there were funny-shaped windows. and those INCREDIBLY COLORFUL paint jobs! elaborate airbrushed murals of moonlit deserts or other scenery.

I hooked up a sine wave inverter and ran my modded Dynaco ST70 in my 1964 Ford van for a weekend in 1997. It sounded real good. I used vented 1.5 cu. ft. boxes with JBL D-123 shallow 12 inchers with LE-20 tweeters. I had to reinstall it in my house or it would have stayed. I think I ran my home DAT deck or cassette deck as a source. No car stereo can come close to the dynamics and harmonic richness I heard that weekend.

Colleen im so glad someone asked about which books are great starters. I find that Aspen Pitman in his "Tube Amp Book" is so awesome because it talks about the history of many companies and how they got started. His amp and guitar collection is huge! Tom Mitchell's book really became a reference book for me on how amps work and what goes on with components and how to test them. Love his dry humor. "WD 40 is not a lubricant for amps". Both have helped me repair my own amps. Hugs for Hank ❤️

Happy New Year - regarding tube sound systems in cars, you might want to check out antique radio collectors and ham operators - as late as the mid-60s, Delco (GM) and Philco (Ford) were still making tube radios for their autos and trucks, if only to see what they did (or didn't do) to ruggedize them.

Colleen, I'd like to see you using your test gizmos more often. How do you use an 'O' scope with amps? Can you show how you test tubes and caps? Also, please explain the difference btw testing the mfd reading on an air conditioning run cap vs. the ESR of an electrolytic.
FYI, the term, 'electrocution', means death from electric shock. It might be well to do a vid discussing electric shock, the minimum amperage required to hurt you, the physiologic effects on the heart rhythm and, sometimes days later, the kidneys. As a retired paramedic, this is rather important to me.
I don't see you using a fume extractor of fan. I sure hope you aren't huffing those soldering fumes.
How about a vid discussing the effects of changing the values of caps and resistors on sound? Why were those values chosen by the amp designer? What were they looking to do?
As always, more vids of repairs please.
    Big fan,
    Bob

Simple is better than complex, complex is better than complicated. Personally I love point-to-point or tagboard builds, if done well (looking at Hiwatt here) they're the most reliable and serviceable of all.
Aluminum is fine if given enough thickness; 1.5 to 3mm depending how heavy the transformers are and how rugged we want it vs cost and work needed. Plus it's resistant to rust - it can be left naked and nothing will happen to it while steel has to be coated / painted to protect against rust. My personal bet would be aluminum.
Nice to hear you had a good mentor! Mine was Piotr Stanisz of Black Dog Amplification, I learned a lot of stuff from him but I'm mostly self-taught, pretty much like you. Nothing beats getting your hands dirty... and sometimes scuffed too.
As for sexism in tech, it's the sad truth - to the point that I often wanted to reply "I was making amps fifteen years before I knew I was a woman!", haha.
My advice would be to learn soldering on some other projects, not tube related. Then get into audio electronics, do tests and measurements. Then get into the tube stuff - with its quirks and dangers. That's a whole new thing to learn, for the dedicated and determined... but if someone is here, they already are.
30 is a nice age! I thought you were about my age (closer to 40 than 30).

Hi, thanks for sharing your knowledge on amps and keeping us novices from being electrocuted. I myself am 70 and own several tube amps. I recently had a jet city 20 serviced and had the power tube sockets replaced. The amp does not seem to have volume although it is dead quite and sounds good. I also own the vintage version of the same amp, and it has much more volume and responsiveness, so I am going to take it back in for further testing. I had to go thru a music store to get this serviced, and had no direct contact with the tech. Any thoughts on the problem, maybe the tubes? The amp was red plating the EL84 closest to the tranny. I had a set of better tubes from Tube Dr, but was going to sell the amp, so i put the china tubes back in, which I found the sockets were not happy. The amp tubes appear to be working ok, The guy is a fender certified tech I've been told, but the store owner don't want me have direct contact with him. My go to guy retired a couple yrs back, and I'm not the guy who likes to be fed a line of BS. I didn't like this amp from the git go, and only used it a couple of times, even after upgrading tubes.I love the vintage version. I guess what I'm saying is, since both of these guys OK'ed the amp, it is obvious to me it is not right. I'd assume that the tech tested the tubes since one had red plated. I was going to sell it, but i want it to be in proper working order. Not a good situation, I had a similar situation with a go between and they totally got wrong what i wanted. Maybe a video of similar botched deals could come out of our bad experiences, save someone these problems.

I always enjoy your videos. You do good work and you're very charming.. Since electrocution means a fatal shock, I recommend avoiding those, even though you can only ever get one. 😢You can certainly put a tube amp in your van for the fun of it but tubes are good as guitar amps because their sonic nonlinearities are part of their character as musical instruments. For reproducers of recordings, a non-linear transfer function is a drawback. With van acoustics and road noise, you might not care but it seems like an elaborate project to undertake with no performance rewards to be gained. Anyway, happy new year and best wishes for a wonderful 2024!
