    CORRECTION: Wizardry first released in 1981, not 1971. 🤘

    As is commonly said in western anime fandom, "Record of Lodoss War is what most DMs envision their D&D game as being like. Slayers is what most D&D games are ACTUALLY like."

      Look for the youtube channel Guided by Cardia, its run by the unofficial, but excellent, Sword World translation project.
      The basic mechanic is 2d6+class level. Classes work more like skill packages than classes in D&D, so multiclassing is not only expected, but generally seen as a requirement.

    I had a suspicion that the cultural impact of D&D on Japan was huge, but nobody really talks about this. Thanks for confirming my suspicions with wonderful mini-documentary

    I've heard of Lodoss War but knew zero about it. I'll have to look into it now. I started playing D&D in the mid-80's and I played some early computer rpg's before that. Looking back, they weren't nearly as good as I remember, as much as they were new. When I first played FInal Fantasy, tho, things changed. I still play it every now and then.

      Lodoss War really consumed me when I learned about it's origins. It's so freaking cool to me that Japan was doing the critical role thing back in the 80s.

    Man, my favorite piece of Wizardry trivia is that the co-creator Robert Woodhead (namesake of Trebor, the Mad Overlord) is licensing classic anime for blu-ray releases today. When I first sat down and watched a retrospective on CRPGs the Wizardry section had me all "wait, what, the AnimEigo guy who let us buy Bubblegum Crisis on blu-ray?"

    • @PaladinProse
      @PaladinProse  Месяц назад

      That is awesome. Have you seen the Wizardry OVA? it's uploaded here on RUclips. I haven't had the chance but I really wanna check it out.

      @@PaladinProse Oh yeah, I think I checked it out earlier this year. It's very, very basic, but treating it as a relic of its time and the fact that the dungeon crawler doesn't have more story than the official background lore it's actually charming for what it is. But don't go in expecting a Lodoss or anything lol

      @@Raidanzoup Yeah that sounds about right. Sounds like the perfect thing to check out with friends over some beers and banter.

    This is a super cool story to see how it all evolved from a campaign. And my first JRPG experience was Dragon Warrior (Dragon Quest) on the NES.

    What I most appreciate is how the Japanese call them TRPGs rather than TTRPGs. Like, it's too many letters! *And* how exactly am I supposed to say TTRPG without giggling like a small child every time I say "TT"? It just doesn't make sense. TRPG it is!
    Thanks for the video! The history of RPGs in Japan is a fascinating topic!

      Table TALK RPGs is such a charming way to describe the medium, as well. I totally agree! Planning more content focused on this topic in the future so please stay tuned.

    There is an excellent unofficial translation of Sword World 2.0 and 2.5 for english speakers. Konosuba and Goblin Slayer have both gotten official English releases. They are all fun systems.

    I'm going to dive into Sword World 2.5, recently it has been translated and it feels at least for me... kinda... nostalgic.

      Guided by Cardia is great! And I totally know what you mean. The early-to-mid 2000s Japanese fantasy vibe is really special.

    Call of Cthulhu and Sword World are both way more popular than DnD in Japan. If you go into any Japanese manga shop or LGS you will find rows upon rows of Japan exclusive fan made and unofficial Call of Cthulhu supplements and barely any space reserved for DnD at all in comparison.

    do people play dnd in japan? actual japanese people?

    • @PaladinProse
      @PaladinProse  7 месяцев назад

      TTRPGs are pretty niche in Japan, but yes D&D is the second most played by Japanese folks behind CoC.
