What makes Adam so darn good at this? I think it's his conversational style. He's talking "with" you, not "to" you. And that's true whether he's railing along a stretch of trail or sitting next to a campfire or simply in front of the camera while spinning a yarn about what his next project is or how to clean an air filter. Genuine interest in the subject and a love for sharing his knowledge borne from experience.

I used to ride on the back of that bad boy when i was a kid
You might like this story... my dad (who owned the Iron Horse) worked as a school principal at the local primary school. He used to ride the old steed to work (among many other places) on Sundays to print out the school newsletter.
One day he heard a roar in the distance, a motorcycle pulling up at the light, and somehow, he knew it was an Africa Twin, or so the story goes. He jumped up and ran outside and flagged down the bike and it was Edgar, who must have had no idea what was going on, but eventually parked in the school parking lot to find the other bike there, when things must have made slightly more sense. The rest is history!
Very cool to see you now restoring it, he would have loved your channel.

    • @MotologyFilms
      @MotologyFilms  7 месяцев назад +8

Wow mate, it's funny I was just thinking I need to call Edgar soon and get a more detailed story from him and what he knows about how the IronHorse got to Australia.
He did show me a picture of when your dad was travelling with his mates who also bought XRV's overseas. So cool you found this video and can see her new life unfold ...

@@MotologyFilms Well the story goes that about a half dozen were brought to Australia by some (perhaps Japanese) guys that were going to tour together. Then they were sold, scattered to the winds. A fellow in Melbourne picked one up from these lads but discovered his legs weren’t quite long enough to feel safe on it.
Meanwhile my dad had to upgrade from his old XLV which he’d had an ‘encounter’ with a kangaroo on. So he flew with my mum to Melbourne to buy the AT. They stayed a couple nights with a motorcycle enthusiast (all the rooms in the house were full of parts) and he helped fit the bike with the back carrier, and then they headed off camping down the Mornington Peninsula, Great Ocean Road, Barossa all the way to Adelaide. Then my mum flew home and my dad rode it across the Nullarbor home (WA).
Africa Twins were virtually unknown in Australia at the time but I think my dad found some Internet forums on his old Macintosh and connected with people that way. He would prattle on now and then about the Paris-Dakar races but I didn’t really know what he was talking about as a kid...
Parts could be purchased from a guy in Singapore… I think this kind of lore was passed around on the internet forums. This was ~2002.

I bought my RD04 with 23-24 (15 years ago). It was the only bike I have ever heard of because of Dakar. Bought her in Austria, when I saw her I was so scared of the Queen , that I did not test drive her! Damn this bike was big, I was tinking at this time (my bike experience was a Puch Maxi moped and a Vespa 50cc).
Put her in a van and off we went. 5 monts later I drove her from Austria to Barcelona and back.
Now she needs restauration, but this is going to be father and son project in a few years.
    I still love the Queen!❤

@@headonnis3814 wolves want nothing to do with people and they can smell you miles away. Only cougars I’m worried about while riding are the ones at the local bar. Grizzlies aren’t an issue unless you’re in their hunting areas or are leaving garbage everywhere around camp. And black bears are afraid of their own shadow(unless you’re in whistler in which case they’re basically just giant black raccoons).
Deer are what you need to be worried about. Those fuckers will dart right in front of you with zero notice or reason. But seeing how Adam is used to Kangaroos jumping out in front of him I think he’ll be fine.

I was off-roading a VFR1200X. I turn 60 this year, so that was starting to take a toll. Every lay down in the dirt finishes with a slipped disc. Watched your War Horse and was bummed out that Honda didn’t sell the original AT here. Not interested in a new AT. Then a mate said he was selling his RD07A, 2003. It was one of those whims where he had a buyer and I said if it falls through I’ll have it. 30 min later he said it was mine. I flew to Sunshine Coast from Canberra and rode it back. 5kms in the battery was dead. An inauspicious start. Got it running and set the idle high and didn’t stop until I was close to a new battery. Then sat in the saddle for 10 hours straight, stops for fuel only. It’s pretty mint for a 21 year old. I’ve started collecting parts and fixing all the little things. Can’t wait for the first big trip. You’re spot on, there’s just something about them. Compared to the newer bikes it feels very familiar. Straight away, like I’d owned it for decades. It’s no power house, but it does everything I need it to do and it fits like a glove.

I am 27 and found my forever motorcycle. It's a 2006 Honda Unicorn 150. I used to have a Honda CBR250r and a Kawasaki ninja 300 but out of two I had a special bond with the 150cc champ. It might be under powered compared to two of them. But somehow the unicorn gives the most pleasurable rides. Later I did some mods to take on for the longer rides. It did very well ❣️. Just like you I found out one is not enough so I bought another one for spares but it's currently under restoration😅. Africa twin is always a dream motorcycle for me. I was always looking for the touring video of Africa twin on RUclips, that's how I end up watching your channel, your contents really set the foundation for my goal to buy a Africa twin. Because I am from India , I can't get one here coz there ain't any older Africa twin sold here. Even if I manage to find one it will be damn expensive due to its rarity. I love your content. I like older bikes for many reasons. Not one for the latest and greatest tech. I originally purchased an old dr650 out of a barn covered in yrs of dust. The guilt i talk about is i gave up and bought a more dependable one for my 1st cross country trip here in the US. I am going at it alone and needed the reassurance of a machine that just "felt " better. I didn't wanna rush rebuilding the ol dr. I wanted to do it proper. Full frame up. After watching a fellow take a passion for old AT's i have settled on what would make me the happiest with the DR. Full frame up but rather then try to get it to compete in performance or appearance with dual sports or ADV's of this time...take her back to her root. Make her run better than new but look like she rolled off the showroom floor of 1993. I was going about her all wrong. Planning on making her something she never would have been.

The RD04 in itself is a legendary machine, combine it with your personality and bamm, the quality of content skyrockets. Throughout the whole video i kept on smiling. Stumbling upon something is different thing, but finding the same thing is altogether a new experience. Will be waiting for your content of taking Ironhorse to other countries.

Nice,Adam. It’s a special thing when you create a bond with a motorcycle that tugs at your heart strings. A year ago I purchased a 2002 Yamaha TDM 900 with 44,000km on the clock. A bike I had wanted since they first came out in an 850. It’s such an engaging motorcycle to ride and with its twin 270 degree engine, sounds absolutely glorious. It’s devoid of all the electrickery that sanitises the riding experience and is pure motorcycling. It’s capable enough for what I need and with 86hp and 89nm, has enough grunt, easily. The build quality is outstanding and will survive well into the future beyond my existence and above all else, it makes me smile!
Congratulations on your Iron Horse, mate!

I just googled the TDM. What a magnificent machine. You know, in owning these old XRV750s, I'm starting to gather an appreciation for some of the older street bikes.

Isn’t it funny how we connect with what is essentially a mass of mechanical parts and wires. I think it’s all in the discovery of the history behind the bike. Without that, it’s simply a vehicle to get us from A to B. Thanks for you story Adam👍

Mine is part of me and has changed my life. I even talked a friend in to buying one, rebuilt it with him and it changed his life. The film of this is on my channel.
Not had a moment to watch your channel in the last couple of years and am totally stoked this was the first I saw.
Keep up the good work dude.

I recommend progressive springs in the front, overfill the oil a bit and replace the rear shock with a mid to high end Wilbers (or something comparable).
Been running this setup on my RD07 for roughly 50k all over Europe (including TET) and I love it.

I think one of the most geniune blokes to deliver us professional content. Adam doesn't have to prove anything in the riding area, I pick up on a more geinune feel in the videos compared to other people and their content (others sound over the top scripted/fake) when he is talking and narrating.
Now the owner of two big boy AT's! You blokes from Oz living the dream!

Every time I think of my bike is, its slow, doesnt have much power but it hauls ass everywhere I want. Its a 2-stroke, it does 5-6liters per 100km at 80-90km/h and tops out at 120~.
But damn its so comfortable, lightweight for its size, has perfect gearing ratios for offroad and onroad, spares are easy to find etc. It's called the Yamaha DT125R from 1991.
Had it since 2003 since I was 16years old. Now I'm 36 and its fun as ever. I dont give it any pity or think about if its going to break. 5minutes flat out on ice with 9000rpm pinned throttle on 5th gear (enduro studded tyres really hog a bit of power with 18/55 gearing) 😁

Wonderful video^^. I took a liking to an old DR650 Dakar from my dad's friend. Been sitting in a barn for 20 years, longer than i've been alive at that point. Was neither cheap nor easy to rebuild her but the feeling of riding a 34 year old bike and really using it for what it's made is an amazing feeling. When i took her to the mountains the first time last year i may or may not have been tearing up a little.
Anyways, love the stories you tell and these beautiful XRVs^^

With the Africa Twin and the Super Ténéré I can only think of a few legends left to name: Cagiva Elefant with it's Lucky Strike painting and the first "Monster" engine.
Or the "Big One" ... the DR Big from Suzuki with it's 800 ccm one cylinder.
Good stuff. And these are real legends ... they proofed it decades ago ang can be found all over the world.

So IF you decide to come to America, I would def check out some of the BDR's. Stands for Backcountry Discovery Routes and they are pre-planned waypoints that take you through different parts of the country. I've so far only completed the MABDR, but I plan to work through them all over the next few years! Would love to see your version of a movie on one of them.
