Hello.Faith Johnson from Delaware. I have be sewing since back in 1957 wow, learning to quilt every since 2014 and wow again and I love it all. I’m a retired garment maker. I love watching your videos. Happy sewing and quilting to you.❤️🧵🪡✂️😀
I am behind just signed up. But sure am learning so much just off the first 23min. I have been sewing and quilting over 40 years. Your simple explanation is now making so much sense t use the color wheel so much more than I ever have. I have done applique over the years and learned to make quilts with my mom as she made hers. Thank you
My husband is a painter and I have his old paint fan deck, which is what that large fan of all the color cards is called, and I am so excited to have it. He was going to throw it away and I went nuts and grabbed it up so thrilled to have it. He just didn't get it lol
This is the best color help I have had. Picking colors for a quilt has always intimidated me but your explanations are very easy to understand. Thank you…and thank you for the handout 😊
I have to be honest, I didn’t learn anything from this video. Art class was always my favorite class. Unfortunately children these days don’t have art courses. Excellent instruction!
Oh my gosh! This is the best explanation of the color wheel! Your fabric examples help so much, and the handout is fantastic! You've also given me courage (and permission) to take out pieces in my precuts and use them in another project. :)
Glad it was helpful! I use to think that I needed to use an entire Jelly Roll but my quilts look so much better when I pull the odd colors out and replace them with compliments or tetrads.
I use to choose pattern first but I found that sometimes my fabric got lost in the design. By choosing the fabrics first, I can select patterns that showcase the prints or patterns best. This is especially true for larger scale prints or directionsal prints.
Loved this. Would like more of these lessons to help us have better results. Good tips are hard to find. Choosing the right color is my biggest fear!! Thank you!
Wonderful! This channel is a learning channel. I'm glad it's helpful in your journey as a quilter. If you have suggestions for lessons please let me know. Welcome to the Jelly Roll Club.
One of the things that stood out to me was near the end of your discussion when you pointed out that you would not match the exact colors in your focus fabric. I had seen similar demonstrations and could not understand that before, thanks for making that clear.
It's hard to find an exact color match if the fabric line is not in stock at your local quilt shop. By selecting a couple of colors that are a little bit lighter or darker, you get more visual interest. It also makes it easier to find colors that blend well with the overall color scheme.
Hi, I love your video. I am buying some elderly quilters color wheels for Christmas. The one that you use in your video looks like the perfect size. Would you please let me know the size and brand it is. Thank you some much.
The handout is beyond amazing!!! Thank you for your inspiring tutorials and wise guidance!!! I'm learning so much from you!!! Thank you for sharing you love of quilting!!!!
Thank you for your time, I finally got my sample blocks finished I need to learn how to size my blocks, I mean I sized the 2.5 squares and put together and most are good, but when I added my Sassing a round a quilt blocks It wasn’t square anymore don’t know what I’m doing wrong unless it’s my seams but they looked ok lol. My very first time to assemble blocks together. I’m purchasing Aqua and gray is what I would like to have for my next quilt I would like a calm quilt.i loved making the pen wheels blocks they are my favorite blocks. I purchased one yard materials from Walmart didn’t see any jelly rolls there going to try cutting, I’m learning colors tonight lesson was very helpful.
Could you address using various grays as your main fabrics ... Aren't they considered neutrals...and how to find pops of color (for instance corals) in this situation? It's a lot harder than I thought it would be! Thank you!
Black, White, Brown, and Grey are the most common neutrals. When I use a quilt that is heavy Black/Grey I look for fabrics that are "bright" and "saturated" - this allows the colors to pop against the grey. You can see an example here on my Facebook page facebook.com/JellyRollClub/photos/a.4135394883160737/4135388323161393
When you are explaining the first part of your video, I don't see the bottom of the colorwheel. I'll keep watching hopping if your camera shows the bottom part.

Welcome!
How many neutrals would you buy and from the lightest to the darkest.
I like a variety. Most of my quilts have 3 to 6 neutrals to balance or contrast the colors.
Could you address using various grays as your main fabrics ... Aren't they considered neutrals...and how to find pops of color (for instance corals) in this situation? It's a lot harder than I thought it would be! Thank you!

Is the a pattern or directions for the half square triangle quilt in the background of your video?
Hi Mark - here is the pattern page sites.google.com/view/jelly-roll-club/home/ikea-quilt
How do we get the handouts.

How do you know how many colors to use in a quilt?
It depends on the pattern. In most cases 3-5 colors in a quilt makes for the most interesting color combinations.
When you are explaining the first part of your video, I don't see the bottom of the colorwheel. I'll keep watching hopping if your camera shows the bottom part.
