  • YanksAtShea is proud to present another of eleven videos highlighting the last ten home runs of Roger Maris's magic 61 home runs hit during the 1961 season breaking Babe Ruth's single season home run record. Number 59 was called by Mel Allen (had he only called #61 instead of Barber) on this September evening in 1961 in Baltimore. Long live the REAL all-time single season home run king Roger Maris.

This game was big enough to be aired in Buffalo (and probably elsewhere).
That graphic “59” seemed like cool technology at the time.
One of the few times I was allowed to stay up past my bedtime - huge fan of #9.

Photographers on the field so close to the action.

i miss the old game, when it was just the game, the announcer, and the crowd... and your imagination. no jumbotrons blasting mindless commercial noise the whole game. this was when everyone realized maris could do it. #59 with 7 games to go...

      That's when baseball was baseball.

I wonder if you have the at-bat where Maris just misses #60 later in the game...in the movie 61* they talk about how Maris would have an asterisk on the record if he didn't hit 60 or more in 154 games or less, and this was game 154. Fortunately he hit two more to break the record and they eventually took the asterisk off

The jerks took the asterisk off AFTER he died.(big deal) The baseball media never gave Roger the respect he deserved.

In the summer of 1993 I visited a Roger Maris commemoration in a hallway of a shopping mall in Fargo, North Dakota.
The ball you see hit here . . . was there in the cheap display case.
    Strange to consider: Baltimore on Sep 26th 1961 . . . Maris who passed away on Dec 14th 1985 . . . Fargo North Dakota in July 1993 . . . and me.

I had some friends visit this "shrine" in the fall of 1999.
