I tried this for the first time a couple of weeks ago and I will NEVER buy store-bought yogurt again. I currently have some in the crockpot. This was so delicious and I could just kick myself for not knowing this sooner!! Thank you so much!!
I just wanted to thank you for this video on how to make Greek Yogurt in your crockpot. I watched several videos and found yours to be the best! You took the time to explain each step in the process! I like how you added the step of taking the temperature of the milk, rather than guessing that two hours and your milk would be at the proper temperature. As you said ALL Crockpot and Slow cookers are different. I did add to your recipe though! I do add a half a cup of powdered milk to my 110 degree ( mixing it in a measuring cup to make sure it's all dissolved) and then I add my yogurt started to the cup mixing again before adding to my warmed milk. I do this and let it set over night. Adding the powdered milk does make it thicker. I let my yogurt strain in the colander and set up while straining. I have to say my yogurt was so thick and creamy after three hours in the refrigerator. After the whole process was done I had two and a half quarts of Wonderful Greek Yogurt! Thanks again! Love your video and recipe!
you can set it on the stove for a few minutes and reach 180 degrees, let it cool to 110 degrees in some cold water in minutes, and then wrap it in a cloth and place in cooler. again all within 10-20minutes rather than waiting hours upon hours and hoping to be available when said hours are done. Faster, more efficient, and cheaper electricity wise.
@@Forever_Laura When I heat the milk fast on the stove the yoghurt tastes OK, but the texture is lumpy/grainy. The long, slow heat helps keep it creamy.
No problem - seems like it would be the same to me- give it a try and let me know how it turns out. Your yogurt sounds fabulous! I make a similar mixture with the yogurt that I strain for 24 hours til it is really thick, almost like cream cheese. I just pick whatever herbs I have in my garden, chop finely, add salt and pepper and use it for a spread or dip. So many uses for this stuff!
I used your recipe using one gallon of whole milk. I added 2 cups of powder milk also. (1/2 a cup of powder milk for every quart of milk) My yogurt came out SO THICK. I had very little whey, but I still strained my yogurt. OMG! Delicious thick and creamy. Thanks for this video. I have passed it on to my friends.
Since, we have been in pandemic and retired I have exploring new things such making butter and yogurt. I am trying my first time yogurt making and I am trying your recipe. So, my yogurt should ready in the morning and I will let you know how it turns out. I am using a smaller crackpot and it whole a half gallon of milk. One I noticed it got to hot I kept checking the temperature but oh well. Then it took longer to cool down 110 degrees. I also made a small container of butter. On to my next project.
CaliKim29 Garden & Home DIY I tried this for the first time only used chilly peppers to make my starter before making yogurt in a crock pot. Super fast, Super easy and Super delicious. I am guessing that keeping the temperature at around 110 during fermentation was my issue not to have the "perfect yogurt" every time. Thanks to you I've perfected my method and now making yogurt using your method. Fantastic video. Thank you very much for sharing. Learned another great way to make yogurt.
Hi David D - no one in my family likes it plain either. I put the strained greek yogurt in smoothies and muffins. I add agave or honey and fruit and nuts when I eat it plain - my kids will eat this! I've never tried it, but I'm sure it would be great with vanilla or other flavorings as well. Thanks for watching!
I always wanted to try this but didn't realize it was so easy...you have inspired me to finally give it a go. Thanks so much Kim! I love your videos and hope you continue to make more :)
Okay I tried this with another recipe without the thermometer with no luck you seem to have the perfect video thanks a lot I really appreciate it have some making now hope it comes out
Hi Brian - so glad you here on my channel - thx so much for watching and for the feedback! I love, love this yogurt, it is so delicious and healthy, I just can't be without it! Sweeten it with agave or honey , put it in smoothies, use in in place of sour cream, so many uses! You will love it and a huge money saver. We go through two batches per week now!
With a 1/2 gallon, you only need a few spoonfuls. You will have to strain the whey to your desired level of thickness to make it into Greek Yogurt. I just use a strainer lined with coffee filters. Overnight is usually good for Greek Yogurt thickness. I love to strain it really thick (24 hrs or so) and add all kinds of fresh chopped herbs to it. Its almost like herbed cream cheese! Yummy! Hope this helps!
No problem - I need to catch up too - hard to fit it all in! Making yogurt is sooo easy - try it! I could see Sindy liking this one. Thanks so much for your positive words, Luke!
Thanks for sharing this! I just completed my first batch of homemade yogurt! It's perfect-- tangy, creamy... yum! I'm so excited this works because my whole family (7 of us) LOVES yogurt and we go through it quickly when I buy it.
i have been following someones suggestion and i added one full cup of yogurt and its been coming out thin...even though its thin its stil full of the healthy probiotics i hope? Grateful to hear your suggestion now i will try to add only two 2T :)
Funny you made this 10 years ago and I'm just watching now. thank you youtube! and thank you Kim. I watched several recipes and yours was simple and effective.
THAT IS funny!!! Yikes! LOL. Thanks, my recipes never seem to do well on the views and they take a lot prep to film, etc. Every now and then I'll receive a comment on them! Thanks for watching - Kim
Thanks for sharing. I have made yogurt over the years too... but my family doesn't like the tangy taste. I have one of those yoplet yogurt makers that makes it really easy ... it doesn't make nearly as much as what you do. Great tips on using the strainer and using the old yogurt for the new culture! Thanks again
I do instant pot cold start Greek. Also I put the whole container in .but it's the small one .for the cold Start u do need one with a yogert button. And u need ultra pasteurized milk .but homade yogert I personally think is beneficial. And soo good.the best thing about Greek yougert is it's so versitly .U can go savory or sweet. Also a littles great in cornbread .
I would add it at the end after you have strained it. If you are not straining, add it after the final 2 hours in the fridge. I'm sure its delicious with vanilla -I've never tried this. Let me know how you like it.
This is great. Long time ago I had a yogurt incubator and I wonder what happened to it. Can't wait to try this method but I need a bag to keep it warm.
does anyone have use Culturelle? our pediatrician prescribed for our kids and I was wondering if I can make this recipe using 1 full envelope instead. Any thoughts? thanks!
Thanks - it is so easy and really, really delicious! I appreciate you watching! I just watched your video on propagating strawberries - good timing - as I plan to do this with runners from my plant very soon! Your channel has some great content!
I was so surprised to see you on a cooking channel I followed you all spring and summer for the gardening season. I learned a lot from you. My husband bought me a yogurt maker, with 12 6 oz jars, but I have the instant pot with a yogurt setting, and a good recipe I got from Pressure Luck with Jeffery. it's 52 oz fair life milk, 1 can sweetened condensed cream and of course the yogurt starter. just put all ingredents in and push the yogurt button, makes greek yogurt also, 8 hrs and it's finished. Not trying to take away from your recipe, just wanted to share something with you for all the good tip's I got all spring, summer, and fall. I have a slow cooker but it starts at 4 hrs 6 hrs 8 hrs and a keep warm setting so I don't think I could make the yogurt that way. thank's for the wonderful idea, love ya calikim, see ya in the spring, unless you are into Kefir milk smoothies and water Kefir. Nicky
Yay! Don't you just love it! Amazing how easy it is, right? And so tasty and creamy too! What's your fav way to eat it so far? We love it in smoothies and plain with honey and bananas and nuts.
Hi kokojoe - you don't have to use raw dairy. I just use regular 2% milk that you buy at the grocery store. Do not have a recipe for tomato soup - but that is a fabulous idea! Does anyone out there have a recipe they would like to share?
An excellent instructional video, well structured with underpinning knowledge regarding the steps used. It was delivered in a confidence inspiring manner, so much so I put the slow cooker on immediately at the end of the first stage. However, I really would have liked to see the end product. It would have helped me to see the strained and the non-strained version of the yogurt with a little information on dealing with thin or grainy yogurt and perhaps some troubleshooting tips. Thank you, I really liked your tutorial..
Emilee Phillips It is so creamy and yummy, we can't be without it in our house now! And so easy , such a money saver! Here's a delicious recipe using homemade yogurt that you might like to try too: ruclips.net/video/acxS4jMAQTQ/видео.html. Thanks for watching, Emilee and Chloe!
Hi NCC - it actually not too much work, but definitely more work than buying it in the store. But wow is it worth it! A little agave, some nuts and fruit is one of my very favorite ways to eat it too- a taste treat for sure! Thanks for watching and commenting!
This just taught me how I messed up my first batch before I found your video. Lol. I did everything else right, but I added too much starter and ended up with something that smelled like yogurt but had a consistency halfway between milk and yogurt.
Hi, Kim, I watch your gardening videos every week. I turn on my 'you tube' to yogurt making and went about doing kitchen work. After the first video ended yours came on and I said to myself, 'I recognize that voice,' and sure enough, I look and it is CaliKim from the garden show. Thanks for the reminder of how to make yogurt. Was that Camera Guy doing your shoot? Hey, have a great day and see ya on Mondays.
Hi Kim, I heard you mention in another video that you make Kefir as well. Do you have a video for that process? Thank you so much, really love your videos.
I've been looking for a good blueberry muffin recipe that uses yogurt? Would you be willing to share yours? I usually make zucchini/bannana/choc chip muffins that I use it in. Thanks for watching!
I'm not one for yogurt, but it's good to know that it's easily made at home, except I don't have access to raw dairy. Do you have a recipe for tomato soup, with all those tomatoes you grown and the cool season coming it would be a great treat.
I've made this a couple of times and it is outstanding! My kids love it when I mix it with honey for them in the morning. I was curious though, if you wanted to add flavoring to it like key lime juice or lemon.... can you add it at some point to make the entire batch taste that way or should you really only add flavoring right before you're going to eat it. I was wondering if the acidity of either of those two items with change the makeup of the yogurt if it sat around for a few days in the fridge mixed up. Thanks again for the video!!
Great video! I made my own yogurt for a couple of years and absolutely loved it. Then I discovered milk kefir. I find it works better with my body and I think it tastes just like yogurt. I was wondering if you too made milk kefir and/or kombucha which I also make regularly.
My yogurt after 16 hours is still complete liquid form. Maybe I didn’t heat it enough? Only 1 hour…but it got over 180 degrees? I let it cool below 110 degrees before adding probiotic. What is my problem? Should I dump this or do I have kefir milk if I put it in fridge?
You don't need to use finished yogurt to make the next batch. After you strain it, keep a little bit of the whey in a small mason jar in the fridge. It contains plenty of bacteria which will survive days in the fridge. When you're ready to make another batch just dump that in. Keep saving whey and you'll be able to eat all the yogurt each time.
Ol Ok I was wondering why ppl where putting them n the oven over night using a light crazy I no I'm a 📦 club shopper so I got plenty of them bags n love this idea so much better frfr n I can just use a small store bought yogurt as a starter instead of the starter powder corrected ?
Hi Kim I Love the video. I have made Yoghurt but by boiling it to 180 degrees and followed the necessary steps and had great Yoghurt. Loved it. However, I did try the Crockpot method but I think I left it too long and the milk started curdling. What can I do at this point to still use it or make something out of it? Thank you.
Hello Kim, Please forgive my ignorance. Our Yogurt says Active Cultures is it the same as Live active Cultures. Seems to me that Active culture would have to be alive but, I'm not 100% sure. My wife makes Yogurt with Garlic, spearmint, Black Pepper, Salt to taste and Cucumbers. Best to use Cucumbers that have a thin skin like Persian or English.
Has anyone tried this using So Delicious Dairy Free coconut milk? I know I’d have to add a teaspoon of sugar to replace the lactose, but other than that, I assume it’d be the same process?
Looks like a lot of work, but anything worth having usually is. I had a girlfriend (forever ago) that turned me on to putting wheat germ(in a serving of plain yogurt) and banana's with whatever type sweetener you like. It is pretty tasty! Wow that was 22 years ago. Thanks for the video!
We eat a ton of it, and I use it in countless ways in the kitchen so it is much more economical to make my own! Also, there are many health benefits to yogurt, and the store bought yogurt has many additives and lots of sugar that isn't good for you. Making your own is healthy and you can control the ingredients and flavors. Thanks so much for watching, Marty! Let me know if you try it!
Yes you can incubate it for 24 hours. They use that long 24 hour incubation so the lactose is used up and the milk sugars gone. It helps to cure stomach ailments and used in a special diet protocol.
Hello Anne, so glad you’re making yogurt , it’s so easy, saves money and super tasty! Leaving it at room temp will not thicken it. After is done in the crock pot, put it in the fridge for a few hours to let it set up a bit more. If it is still not thick enough for your liking, line a strainer with coffee filters, set this over a bowl for a few hours or overnight (in the fridge) . This will allow the whey to drain and will make it thicker. Let me know how it turns out!
i don't find the setting up stage in fridge first necessary maybe cause i add some powder milk...I just dump finished yogurt into strainer/bowl and toss in fridge to thicken..turn's into yes sort of keifer..or mid east name labini..have friends I gift and they rant and rave over it I feel like a super hero lmao..well off to see what fall seeds to sow i live so calif on coast and have to do shopping bag balcony garden..anyone have suggestions for this noobie/ growing cherry tom's, thai basil ,mint, chives..so proud and shocked still alive and well
perfect - its always good to find what works best for you and really dial it in. Homemade yogurt is so creamy and delicious and I prefer it hands down over storebought. Not to mention it saves so much money. Please watch my "Growing Your Fall Garden, #1" video to help you get started with your fall garden: ruclips.net/video/m_WxHsx2er8/видео.html. Container garden tips are coming up in future episodes. Congrats on your cherry toms - always fun to have those to harvest. Thanks for watching!
Hello Kim! I really loved your video. If you could please answer me a question though, I'd appreciate it! I've been watching so many videos on Homemade Yogurt, and something that no one has been answering in any video is: How long does the yogurt stay fresh in the fridge? If you freeze it, how long can it stay fresh for? I read that yogurt in the fridge is only good or 1 week, and if you freeze it, it's only good for a few weeks or the yogurt bacteria will not re-culture well. Do you know how much of this is true?
Hi, +Phoenix Fire! So glad you loved the video! Homemade yoghurt is so easy to make- mine stays fresh for up to two weeks in the fridge and 4 months in the freezer. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!
Yes, that does help. Thank you so much for replying! The answer I found online seemed so short of a time, it just didn't sound right. But none of the videos on RUclips ever mentioned it, so that I could compare different experiences of how long it stays fresh for, etc... Thank you again. I really appreciate it! :)
Hi Kim! Thank you so much for this video. I just tried it and...IT WORKED! YAY! I'm excited to save money and eat healthy all natural yogurt. Question: Can I buy milk on sale, freeze it for later, thaw it and use it to make yogurt? Thanks for your help! :)
Donna- So excited that you tried it and glad you like it! I LOVE the homemade yogurt so much better than storebought. And yes you can freeze milk for later use for yogurt or anything else. Just pour some off the top to allow for expansion How do you like to eat your homemade yogurt? We love It in smoothies, or with honey, bananas and nuts. So creamy and yummy!
+CaliKim29 Garden & Home DIY OK, awesome! I'll try it with frozen milk next. Interestingly, I let the Yogurt drain for 2 days and it turned out very much like sour cream. Love it! My husband, daughter and I are really enjoying putting a little bit of honey in it and eating it just like that. Thanks again for your inspiration! I have passed along the recipe and your video to several of my friends. They were all so surprised when I told them I made homemade yogurt. Hopefully they'll try it to. Lots of Love!
Hey Kim !!! Awesome Job my Friend !!! It does Not Look that Complicated !!! I bet it is Next Level Deliciousness !!! I will have to try that !!! Are you gonna use it in your Next Costco Chicken Salad Recipe ? If you do I hope you have Time to Film it , I think that would make a Wicked Good Video !!! I Love how you walk us Step by Step !!! I think you are Awesome Kim , Fantastic Video and Narration !!! Two Thumbs up Sister !!!
I buy canned crush pineapple, canned cling peaches and strawberries in syrup. I add about a teaspoon and a half of fruit to a cup of yogurt with two to three Equal or Splenda packets. mix it up and have it as dessert after dinner.
+AnnBearForFreedom I have never used kefir, but give it a try and let me know how it goes! Maybe start with a small batch first so you don't waste a ton of ingredients. Always fun to experiment! Thx for watching!
+FARM SIM BOY Yes, that would work too! Use whatever you have around the house that can strain the yogurt. Let me know how your yogurt turns out - we love it and are never without it now. Thanks for watching!
+sumaira mated Hello Sumaira - I just use a store brand - it doesn't matter as long as it is plain yogurt with live active cultures. Homemade yogurt is the best - let me know if you try it! Thx for stopping by!
I tried this for the first time a couple of weeks ago and I will NEVER buy store-bought yogurt again. I currently have some in the crockpot. This was so delicious and I could just kick myself for not knowing this sooner!! Thank you so much!!

You can add about a 1/2 cup of heavy cream after you have heated it to 180 (this will help it cool to 120) and it will help it to thicken.
thanks, for the tip, Misti!
Ok the 1/2 is for how many cups of the milk ?
I am sure there are plenty of people who will love to learn this process. Who knows maybe I will even have a go one day!
ha, ha - I'm actually hoping for a kitchen remodel soon! Thanks for watching!
Love yogurt thanks for the video. Never used my crock pot butv i will now.
Can you use soya milk and plant based yogurt ?
Hello I just came across this video. What do you do with the whey? Just wondering, thank you for this video! ;)
luckychicav look up making ricotta with whey
Kim I am having trouble making it thickens Greek yogurt - with 1/2 gallon of milk how much yogurt should I use? what else could I be doing wrong?
could I get this in a step by step process.
Is the yogurt starter cold or room temperature?
Have you done a video on how you do this with an instant pot? I think you mentioned it in another video.
Hey Kim do you have a recipe for Frozen Greek Yogurt? Maybe Chocolate, Strawberry, or Vanilla. or whatever?
Thank you for the video! Like it, like it. I have a Q. Are you using F degree or Celsius?
My yogurt after 16 hours is still complete liquid form. Maybe I didn’t heat it enough? Only 1 hour…but it got over 180 degrees? I let it cool below 110 degrees before adding probiotic. What is my problem? Should I dump this or do I have kefir milk if I put it in fridge?
You don't need to use finished yogurt to make the next batch. After you strain it, keep a little bit of the whey in a small mason jar in the fridge. It contains plenty of bacteria which will survive days in the fridge. When you're ready to make another batch just dump that in. Keep saving whey and you'll be able to eat all the yogurt each time.
do you refrigerate it while it is draining?
the womans link showed her setting it in the fridge whilst draining i had the same question
ruclips.net/video/Cgq6nkvYlSU/видео.html
Ol Ok I was wondering why ppl where putting them n the oven over night using a light crazy I no I'm a 📦 club shopper so I got plenty of them bags n love this idea so much better frfr n I can just use a small store bought yogurt as a starter instead of the starter powder corrected ?
Suggestion: Just put the insulated bag ON/OVER the crockpot...
Thank you.
I had the curdle problem too. I left it too long, was that the problem?
I assume you refrigerate it while it's straining?
Ever used almond milk?
We eat a ton of it, and I use it in countless ways in the kitchen so it is much more economical to make my own! Also, there are many health benefits to yogurt, and the store bought yogurt has many additives and lots of sugar that isn't good for you. Making your own is healthy and you can control the ingredients and flavors. Thanks so much for watching, Marty! Let me know if you try it!
Can you use almond or rice milk?
Can be in the crockpot for more than 12h? Maybe 17 hour? What is the different 12 to 17 or more time???
Yes you can incubate it for 24 hours. They use that long 24 hour incubation so the lactose is used up and the milk sugars gone. It helps to cure stomach ailments and used in a special diet protocol.
If you want it be thick and leave the yogurt in room temperature over 8 hours, would the yogurt be fresh still?
Hello Anne, so glad you’re making yogurt , it’s so easy, saves money and super tasty! Leaving it at room temp will not thicken it. After is done in the crock pot, put it in the fridge for a few hours to let it set up a bit more. If it is still not thick enough for your liking, line a strainer with coffee filters, set this over a bowl for a few hours or overnight (in the fridge) . This will allow the whey to drain and will make it thicker. Let me know how it turns out!
I've done my share of kitchen remodels. Taking side bets that Kim has Merillat cabinets.
Go for it, let me know if you have any questions and how it goes! Thanks so much for watching , I'm so glad you are enjoying the videos!
my mom makes yogurt like that and its so delicious
+Faiza Nawaz How cool that your mom makes it - is so smooth and creamy and yummy, right? glad you enjoy it too!
I just made this and your video was SO HELPFUL! Thank you, it turned out great :)
i don't find the setting up stage in fridge first necessary maybe cause i add some powder milk...I just dump finished yogurt into strainer/bowl and toss in fridge to thicken..turn's into yes sort of keifer..or mid east name labini..have friends I gift and they rant and rave over it I feel like a super hero lmao..well off to see what fall seeds to sow i live so calif on coast and have to do shopping bag balcony garden..anyone have suggestions for this noobie/ growing cherry tom's, thai basil ,mint, chives..so proud and shocked still alive and well
perfect - its always good to find what works best for you and really dial it in.
Freezing it kills the probiotics. So I don't freeze mine as that defeats the purpose of eating yogurt.
We love
It in smoothies, or with honey, bananas and nuts.
Can we use nut milks
I highly doubt it.
How much did you say to add for the live culture? Yum Greek Yogurt, my favourite.
***** about 1/4 cup for a gallon of milk. Any more than that and it gets too runny. The bacteria don't like to be crowded!
How would you flavor it like make it like all the big yogurt brands like yo plait
I buy canned crush pineapple, canned cling peaches and strawberries in syrup. I add about a teaspoon and a half of fruit to a cup of yogurt with two to three Equal or Splenda packets. mix it up and have it as dessert after dinner.
Would this process be the same for kefir, which is another form of cultured milk?
+AnnBearForFreedom I have never used kefir, but give it a try and let me know how it goes! Maybe start with a small batch first so you don't waste a ton of ingredients. Always fun to experiment! Thx for watching!
have u ever left it for 24 hrs ? the reason i ask is to find out if it will stay warm that long
Could you use cheese cloth instead coffee filters
+FARM SIM BOY Yes, that would work too! Use whatever you have around the house that can strain the yogurt. Let me know how your yogurt turns out - we love it and are never without it now. Thanks for watching!
which brand yogurt u use for starter
+sumaira mated Hello Sumaira - I just use a store brand - it doesn't matter as long as it is plain yogurt with live active cultures. Homemade yogurt is the best - let me know if you try it! Thx for stopping by!
