  • This video is about how Japanese troops occupied two islands in the Aleutians chain off Alaska in 1942, prompting fears they could be used as bases to attack the U.S. West Coast. The U.S. and Canada responded and the Japanese were ultimately ejected. Never heard of it? You're not alone. It was called "The Forgotten Battle." U.S. Air Force veteran and Museum docent Don Miles fills you in and answers questions from the audience. Pilot Ian Wayman describes the Museum's PBY Catalina patrol bomber, a type that played several roles in the Aleutians campaign. You'll see the PBY start up, taxi out, take off, and fly!

My Dad was stationed on Adak. He had a lot of stories of Japanese operations in the Aleutians. He always wanted to go back and see it during peace time, but he never made it. After Adak, he was sent to Germany where he was wounded by German artillery.

One of the questions asked was if the "Flying Tigers" were in the Aleutian campaign & No they were not, however General Chennault's son was flying a P40 in the campaign
& he had a "Flying Tiger" painted onto the nose of his fighter & that is the answer to that question. If you watch a documentary on the Aleutian campaign called War Stories
you will see him, his fighter & the Tiger on the nose of his P40. (Hope this helps sort that one for everyone)

Great work! Love that you did and interview with the pilot and did more history about the specific airplane. Only suggestion is a cockpit tour and maybe a little more flying. Definite improvement over the first two already, so great job!

It was good & very interesting to hear a lecture covering the Aleutian campaign as it does not get the coverage or recognition that it deserves. Also I love anything covering
the PBY as it is one of my most favorite & much respected aircraft, not just it's remarkable service in WW2 but also the entire history of the plane. The "BLACK CATS" in the
Pacific campaign is also a very interesting story just in itself & Thank You for sharing this great video.
