Thank you so much for the video mate! Because of you I bought the set for my V40 cc as well, just received it. I also bought the set to install a plug point inside the cabin, let’s see how that goes. Gonna install it next week! Your video is a great help for the outside part!
I installed the same block heater with a circulating water pump kit on my 2009 V70 T6. The BOSCH circulating water pump circulates water in the system and the motor heats up more efficiently. The pump enters the same hose above the heating resistor and pumps water through the resistor. The pump is powered by a 230V / 12V transformer, which also acts as a branch point for a separate 230V cab heater. The brand is Calix, the same manufacturer that manufactures original Volvo engine block heaters. The Calix part number for this pump kit is 1762010. I don't know if it gets a 110V / 12V version, we have 230V mains voltage here in Finland.
I just installed an engine heater in my 2016 S60 CC and referenced this video. The hot knife/razor made cutting through the bumper very easy and clean. Routing the cable was the most challenging because it is near the serpentine belts and I needed to make sure it was securely clamped away from it. Removal of the passenger wheel and wheelwell cover was needed for proper routing of the cable. There was also a tight fit at the connection point due to the turbo pipe being very close to the heater. It took me more time than anticipated, but your video helped me out. Thanks for posting!! Now I wait for the cold weather to see how well it really works.
Heater works great. When changing the oil yesterday I noticed some residue on the lower hose of the heater. Turns out the screw clamp loosened. I checked the other they and they were all loose too, but not leaking. I lost about a cup or two of coolant but it could have been worse. Keep an eye on the screw clamps. I'm going to change mine to the spring loaded ones or the ones that you squeeze to lock them in place.

Useful video. I did side plug installation, coz of your video. However, I was installing on a VW golf mk5 a block heater, that it's attached on the side of the motor. A calix RE 149. And also the installation for the plug inside the car. Great video, thank you :)
Just a thought .. is it possible to install the socket turned by 180° so the wind while driving is not getting a grip of the protection cover over the 3 leg socket? And rain + wind likewise get more easy access like it's placed/turned now
Super video, Thnx 😊 If I do this i will tap into the line and add a 120v cabin heater and stick on heaters for the oil and transmission pans. How many watts is this coolant heater? Hoping it's low enough to allow for the other heaters to run from the one cord 💁♂️
@volvosweden Hello, very useful video, thank You for that! But in notes about installation manual I've found that this cannot be used in combination with independent fuel powered car heater. I have independent fuel powered car heater and I'm not sure if can have both of these preheaters, but of course use just one in the time. I hope you know mate, you're saving us a lot money with your video manuals, thanks for that!
The way it's designed, it actually only warms up faster the coolant once the engine starts running and the water pump starts spinning to circulate the coolant. This doesn't look like an engine 'pre-heating' device. If it's plugged but the engine is not running only the coolant inside that hose will be warmed, but the coolant around the engine will still be cold at the exterior temperature.
hi would it not be better to have the socket on the car face the other way round so the cover /cap closes the other way around less chance of it opening with the airflow when driving
A nice feature is to connect an electrical outlet in the car connected to this system and add a heating element. As soon as the heater starts to warm the coolant water it also start the heating element and the car will already be warm when step into the car. Very common in Sweden to have that setup.
@@volvosweden I am mostly interested in this type of setup, since remote start is not a good option for my 09 xc70 I really want my car to be warm when I get in it to take my kids to school in the morning. Would love to see how to do this.

How this heater warm up the engine block coolant? It seems to do it for a few inches up and down of that hose. A block heater should be inserted in engine block to warn up the coolant form inside, if is in outside circuit after thermostat is kind of useless. I have an 2011 S80 and think about installing one, after this excruciating Feb/2019 with -20 to -35C, even more with wind chill! The car barely started at -35, battery was a bit weak, but I was amazed by engine behavior, no rattling, noise or other problems, pretty quiet! Syntetic oil does a good job even it was like honey!!!
The heater was installed according to Volvo manual. Its before the thermostat. It does heat the engine block on the inner circuit and not the outer. I recommend this install if you are in a cold climate. It does help with start up of the engine and gives cabin heat faster. Using it every day at home and at work. Ag home I have a timer which starts 3 hours prior t leaving for work. Do it!

I don't know how i got to this video, but this is oddly enough the exact same heater you get on a Canadian spec 2015 Volkswagen Golf TDI. It's not a very effective heater as it seems to shut off if you leave it plugged in more than 4 hours, but it is better than nothing. If it had a built in pump it would be a decent little heater, but it turns off before REALLY heating the engine.

hi, great install I downloaded the pdf instructions from volvo, but they were for the newer cars, and without being able to look at the car, it's not that easy to follow so, if you could be so kind to answer a couple of questions 1) it's just a heater element, so without a pump? is that why it takes over 2 hours to heat up the engine? (relative low wattage to prevent local overheating and allow natural water"circulation"??) 2) it's installed at the hot side of the radiator? is it placed at the bottom of where the hose goes vertical to improve natural "circulation"? 3) it has an internal thermostat that regulates when to heat and when not? (since you CAN keep the power plugged in the whole night or day) or does it just continue heating thanks
+lillnemo1 If you haven't gotten an answer yet; it's without a pump, only a heating element. It's installed in the lowest point in the cooling system (or also was possible). That's to allow for natural convection to take place when the water is heated. They are usually around 500W. From what I have seen, and from some simple guess work, you should install it so the heated water goes directly from the element to the block. If you direct the heated water into the radiator you will only cool away all that heat before it does any good inside the block. Imagine if the car is in -20 C and winds up to 8-10 m/s, a small 500W heater would do no difference if the water pass through the radiator first. there is no thermostat in this one. It heats the water to equilibrium, if allowed.
