I've actually heard of this adaptation of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame". I do wonder how and why Miramax got ahold of the rights to this particular film.

It came in a package of films from producers Robert and Raymond Hakim; the other two films were Bunuel's BELLE DE JOUR and Rene Clement's PURPLE NOON. It was a limited license, and the movies have since migrated to Janus.

Does the regular 1997 miramax vhs release of the 1956 adaptation has a preview for the Disney version at the beginning or at the end?

I'm sorry but I don't understand what a demo tape is.

"Demo tapes" are a name Buena Vista gave for promotional screening cassettes. They were sent out to video dealers in order to persuade them to carry the title in their stores. They contained promotional material and trailers before the film, then they show the full-length feature oftentimes, and there is a scroll saying it's property of BV and if you have bought or rented this tape call 1-800-NO-COPYS occasionally. They're pretty fun to collect!

@@donutsmasher2505 thanks for letting me know what they were. I think there were other Studios besides Buena Vista (which happens to be a subsidiary of Disney) which had demos tapes as well but I'm not sure if that's true.

@@Otto8845 Oh, there were. And there's plenty of them to find here on RUclips. It's worth noting on many of them that retailers were offered incentives like discounts, free merchandise, or even trips if you bought two-pack sets of tapes or entered contests sponsored by the studio distributing the videos. Plus they would include info and plans on how the videos would be promoted, i.e. print, TV and radio ads.
