im confused why thai refer to themselves in third person

In Thai culture, it’s common for individuals, especially women, to refer to themselves in the third person using their own name or nickname. This practice conveys politeness, humility, and familiarity, and is prevalent in informal settings among family and friends. Men may also use this form, though it’s more typical among women. Additionally, Thai pronouns are chosen based on factors like age, social status, and the relationship between speakers, making the language’s pronoun system more complex than in English.
For example, a woman named Ava might say, “Ava loves Jack ,” meaning “I love you.” This self-referential style is a cultural practice that reflects humility and politeness, and is quite common and socially acceptable in many situations.
It’s important to note that this practice is not a formal part of Thai grammar, but rather a cultural nuance that adds depth to interpersonal communication. Understanding and adopting this practice can enhance your ability to connect with Thai speakers in a more natural and respectful manner.
