    Since I gave my first comment on the different paddles I still enjoy more and more the fixed oval shaft 40 of my medium Lima Pre Preg. You never have regret to buy the best and lightest paddle. On my last paddle sessions in big swell up to 2m and very choppy sea due to backwash from the cliffs I saw that the fixed shaft gives you all the hand positions you need instantly. Now I found the funny name of" Nut Paddles" for all those ajustable paddles. In the same minute I can modify my hands positions many times without having a nut in the middle, depending if I need to accelerate for catching a surf or to relax while the board glides. I have my upper hand on the T handle probably less than one third of the time. Nothing to adjust on the paddle, the only thing you adjust is the place for both hands on the shaft. If suddenly I begin to lose the balance all the 195 cm of the full length of my paddle is ready for a brace. The only reason to buy an adjustable paddle is if you need to share it with others persons. My advice is to buy or rent a cheap adjustable 2 pieces paddle just for the time to know your best length, for your type of practise .Then you can buy the lightest one with a fixed shaft. You will enjoy it so much! My Lima PP is cut to 195cm which now I think it is still 3 cm too long but as I paddle a 12 cm thick board I must keep those 3 cm if I decide to shift on 15 cm thick board. Is Erika shaft a 29mm round or a 26 mm? 26 mm would maybe more confortable for her. Thank you my friend, I am so happy to watch and watch again your videos. Great job.

      Thank you, I'm always so happy when someone appreciates our videos so much, thank you so much, you made me very happy! We share the same opion about paddles. I rather have two fixed paddels for different boards or one for fitness and one for recreation paddling instead of one 2pcs. We have one 26mm 2pcs all the rest is round 29mm, she use 29mm and is happy with that. Do you like the oval shaft?

      @@danerik.westerlind Yes I find the oval shaft gives a better control of the angulation of the blade when I do not have my upper hand on the T handle. It is also more ergonomic and confortable for the hands. In 1990 I introduced the greenlandic paddle on the french market and this paddle is extremely confortable. the tumb and forefinger hold a nice oval shaft while the palm and the other fingers curl around the root of the blade on a wide oval turned 90 degrees to the oval of the shaft. from 2008 to 2013 I paddled my surfskis 18000 km only with wing paddles with oval shafts too. when I got my Lima pre preg with the oval shaft I noticed a great benefit compared to my previous Lima carbon with an ajustable 29mm shaft. with the Medium blade the Lima PP and oval 40 shaft ,total length before cutting the weight is 404 gr. now resized to 195 cm it must be around 390 gr. We have a totally different practise but it's always interesting to see how paddling became your lifestyle.

    I've got ITIWIT two-piece paddles.
    after 5 summers they are still like new.
    One is 547 grams and another 541 grams. I think 3-piece paddles are only for people who want to fly with the board, otherwise 2-piece is easier to put in a small car like Prius or 1-piece if you have a big car or live right on the water.

      Thanks for sharing, always happy to hear about others experience.😍 I have not used itiwit paddle. Seems like good quality on their paddles. I have 1-piece in our Toyota Aygo, works fine. Not only flying, 3-pcs is also good for people that travel with bus or train, that want to fit the paddle on their board bag. I take 3-pcs when we are going with the whole family.🤗

      We don't have Aygo here in Canada :) but I've seen them in EU and they look amazing. North America went nuts in recent years and even Yaris disappeared because people think that Yaris is a small car. Everyone is going SUV like RAV4 to have more space and easy work for their knees because they are overweight.
      Paddle length:
      If you ask me without trying, I'd say fitting one-piece paddle in Aygo is impossible, but nothing proves it better than practice - so if you did it that mean it can be done.
      About my experience: in Prius Prime hatchback, the back door slope is taking lots of space from inside top space. I put paddle blades between the front seats and the console. One paddle btwn a passenger seat and the console and another paddle btwn driver's seat and the console. With this setup handles are almost touching the back door window. It's about a couple cm. left in there.
      I think if I lower the back sit, I'll have more space, but it's one more extra step for me.
      Cheers.

      @@george.carlin thanks, I'm not much of a travler but really enjoy hearing about other culture and how it's in other countries! Really interesting to read!! We put paddles from passenger seat across the whole car back to the trunk on drivers side, it works but it's a tight fit. We also drive with out boards inflated on the roof!😂It´s our second car, our first car is Hyundai Kona Electric. We downsized when we started to paddle. Stopped with motors like snowmobile and big motor boats and didn't need a bigger first car than Kona. It's a trend with bigger cars in Sweden too. But it's a long way to what they have in U.S. Sounds like Canda is moving towards U.S in car size.

  • @hntrains2

    Very nicely done, with all the relevant pros and cons considered.
    The difference in weight from one paddle to the next is not big, and yet, if we think about everything that we have to pack and the distance we have to walk when going to the water, every extra gram matters.
    My question: which type of blade is, in your experience, good/better: oval or rectangular? longer or shorter? curved or straight (so you can use the paddle no matter how you hold it)?

    • @danerik.westerlind
      @danerik.westerlind  Год назад +1

      Thanks! You get more power with drop shape like starboard enduro but for me that do touring I like the more rectangular shape in Starboard Lima. So now we only paddle starboard lima. Do you mean curved shaft with curved or straight? I haven't tested that. Not so good a shape but the newer paddles (Lima 2021 and 2022) we have is easier to go in the direction I want and also goes easier and better throw the water than older carbon paddles the started on 2016 that also was starboard. So the paddles have gotten better every year. 🤗

    Thanks for the info. I’m deciding between a 3 piece carbon Lima S35 29mm and a AquaBound Challenge 85 2-piece paddle. Hard to decide. 3 piece would naturally fit in my bag, even though I have only really carried my paddle board inflating @ the car so maybe better to get 2 piece.

    Hi Dan , your videos are a real inspiration, thank you. Can you advise on the best compromise for cutting length on a fixed paddle? I’m mainly doing coastal fun shortish (ie ‘flat’ water) rides but also I’m slowly trying to learn SUP surfing. As you’ll know both ideally require quite different lengths but nothing beats the purity, weight and feel of a fixed so I have to compromise somehow. 😉

    • @danerik.westerlind
      @danerik.westerlind  Год назад +1

      A friend Didier Plouhinec gave me this: here is how to calculate your ideal blade surface: your weight in pounds X 0,25 + 45 = size in square inches of your ideal blade
      example: my weight 68,5 kg X 0,25 = 17,125 kg = 37,75 pounds
      37,75 + 45 =82,75 square inches= 533,86 cm² . my choice is then the Starboard Lima M= 534 cm²). My weight is 71 but I also go with paddle blade M just as Didier. A 2pcs and 3pcs are stiffer than my fixed paddle. I feel it but most I feel the weight difference.

      A fixed paddle is indisputably better. Do you feel the difference between a 2-piece paddle and a 3-piece paddle. Except for the weight. Does the additional articulation weaken?
      Have you tried a size S paddle?

    I cannot trust an adjustable paddle as I got water inside the blade 13 days after I purchased it . awaited for 5 weeks to get the paddle "repaired " and 4 paddle sessions after the problem happened again. Finally the brand recognized 30 per cent of the users of adjustable shaft on the models 2022 got also water inside the blade. It was not water which enters normally in the shaft when you fall in the sea , but water which gets trapped inside. I kept the paddle upside down for days hoping it can drain but it didn't work. When shacking the paddle I could listen the noise of the water inside. So of course as soon as you know your paddling preference buy a fixed shaft paddle, as lightweight as possible. There are many tutorials which give you the right way to chose the size. I mostly do fitness paddling and distance touring, I am 179 cm my paddle is sized to 195 cm. When needed to do faster strokes ( for example to get more stability in a very choppy sea) I can grap the shaft under the T handle and it works fine. I call this "Taking the Connor Baxter Attitude". if you are not sure add 2 cm , better to cut to adjust a second time than to cut too short .
