When Drew said Australia had Papua New Guinea, it's worth mentioning that Australia is the _only_ nation to have had Papua New Guinea. The British handed the southern part of Papua to Australia when they gained independence, while German New Guinea... well, the First World War happened, enough said.
(Not surprised about the languages there- PNG is basically the equivalent of a thousand micro-national tribes walking around in a trench coat.)

One of the best things to have happened to me in 2021 has to be discovering Drew's channel.
The 23k soldiers for Canada is only active duty/reg force. Adding in reserves almost doubles that number.

I'm suprised that Poland has a bigger population density than the US. Poland has about 320 people per square mile (about 123 people per square kilometer). Smaller countries usually have bigger population density, so I guess that makes sense

Fun fact: Finland has the largest archipelago in the world, the Archipelago Sea in Southwestern Finland and Åland (actually also Uusimaa but no one cares.) It's so small in area it could almost fit in lake Ladog but has more islands than the Malay archipelago (basically all of Indonesia, Philippines and Papua New Guinea).
I had no idea the huge Oceania/Asia archipelago shares a name with Malaysia, I've been calling it the Indonesian Islands/Archipelago this whole time

What is hinted at in the military spending segment is that while the US spends a lot, what ultimately matters is how much bang for your buck you get. To get a better sense, you can adjust spending by purchasing power. This isn't perfect either, because if you buy military equipment overseas, you're going to get closer to the international market rate, rather than the purchasing power adjusted rate, but things like personnel salaries and so forth will still have purchasing power adjustments, and some countries (like Russia) produce the vast majority of military hardware domestically, so purchasing power is pretty accurate.
An example of how this changes things is the UK and Russia. Let's take the figures from the video - $59.2b for the UK and $61.7b for Russia; basically tied. The purchasing power adjustment for the UK (I'm taking these from the World Bank) is 1.1148. For Russia it is 2.7869. Applying these adjustments to defence spending gives you new PPP figures of $66b for the UK and $172b for Russia - not so close anymore. The US is the purchasing power benchmark, so no adjustment needs to be made, but if you compare it to China the same way as we did for the UK and Russia, you now get $415b vs $778b. Still a big gap, but not nearly as big as it first appears, and closing rapidly, year on year.
