Fred well done thanks for all your hard work. Wow you are the man. Sorry but I’ve been busy but thanks again love your time and thanks to Dan for his help. Alan from Luton 👍💯
It was a good series of videos Fred and i'm sure a lot of people would have founf it all very interesting. Mag Loop antennas are not the most efficent radiating antennas and need to be acutely tuned for a specific frequency. They ARE very good "receiving" antennas and we used to use a "DX LOOP" antenna in the 60's for receiving DX on Medium Wave and Short wave and as they were very directional made a very good noise blanking and receiving antenna.
Thanks for the video and effort Fred but I don't think I'll bother. I'll stick to my ¼ wave Top loaded DV 27 I've used since the 70's as it works well mobile and my ¼ wave Ham International Balcostar for homebase as it works great too, used that since 1980. Keep up the good work Fred, much appreciated.
Yes you need to point the loop edge towards the transmitting Station and you will be very surprised with the Results smiles ... Also there then is a front and back ... Great you acheived a 1:1 awesome ... The other helpful point is being able to change the direction of the loop remotely ... Remember theres a Very High RF voltage created when Transmitting via loop Antenna ... Enjoy your Charlie Bravo ... I started on CB using .5 watts ... and a Top loaded Whip two metres long ...
Looks like this could be a brilliant RX antenna. I chuckled early on in the video when Dan and Steph weren't getting you... I remember back in the early days, as teenagers, we would "pretend" we couldn't hear somebody, and we'd all join in on the "deafness" wind up. Callum, DX Commander did a video on a similar thing once!
A good comparison might be how well it performs at 11m for someone in a flat with just a balcony, or even next to a window, since that is the sort of scenario where a magloop might make sense. Magloops are more fun at lower frequencies where their small size punches well above its weight, even if they are less efficient down there.
Hi Fred, As c515mps mentioned, try rotating the loop. As you have it mounted it will be horizontally polarised. Rotated through 90 degrees, i.e. "side fed" it will be vertically polarised the same most CB antennas.
Though Canada does not legally employ 27.60125Mhz to 27.99125Mhz FM, it is being used here. I hear the UK 27/81 channels in northern Canada regularly. The 27/81 UK channels seem to be getting more popular steadily. So far, the operators are not being stopped in any way. I do not know how these clandestine operators are getting the radios. But they are proliferating in northern Canada.
Just had a chance to watch this one, Fred. I have that little radio and was putting together a loop from some copper I had laying around this evening. I'm hoping to be able to run 100watts from one of my ham radios..
Hi. If your going to run that amount of power in to a tuned loop your going to need a very big vari capacitor to handle that without very bad arching. Many use Russian oil filled caps but they are pretty expensive.
@@CB-RADIO-UK I got this one out of a full power tuner, (1 1/2 kilowatt?) but the calculator says it will have 2.6 kilovolts of rf at the capacitor and I think it could arc, so I probably won't go over about 20watts for now. Thank you, for the advice.
That's what I thought you could take that mobile in your car (sorry about the calling aliens comment in your backyard). 4 miles, that's excellent! Very cool content. My next thing when I do 'roof work day', it is to put up my OTA TV, antenna. I have an educated idea where to point it. I can put the circular motor on it later next summer, to try other channels.
Fred these loops are ok for receive as youve already established but for tx not very good on 11 meters as the polarisation is totally different from a vertical as you probably know . Keep your money in your pocket mate
I use a Wallen Modulator have both the base loaded and centre load versions and these are very handy and can be put up in seconds the centre load is a bit more difficult to vswr, the baseload version usually get vswred very easily and they were only £35 for the centre load in 2019 and around £20 for the base loaded. I have spoken to you with the base loaded using a crt ss9900. 73's like your channel 👍
Seems you omitted to read the bit about loops being highly directional? Accordingly, they make good rotatable receive antennas because you can tune out directional noise. Also they are very high Q, hence the need to re-tune them every time you change frequency on your radio.
Fred you need to try moving it in different directions it only transmits off the sides of the loop there's a NuleE/DEAD SPOT in the middle... i think i spelled that right.. Cheers Friend still need to work you on the band! I check 305 to see if i hear you. I work europe no problems at all. Cheers from.. 2ny157 Bronx N.Y.
The loop is tx'ing in the horizontal plain and your mates are using vertical antennas so that's a 30db loss on your audio to the vertical station's. Get one of you mates with a 1/2~dipole to turn it flat side and you will boom in 5&9 . You are struggling because you are trying to work cross polarization. You could try laying the loop down flat on the shed roof then you will be tx'ing in the vertical plane Cheers n beers Fred. 26CT2381/2E0LFD Baz.
Hi Fred I'm a c b er from back in the day . I'm thinking about coming back and I'm interested in what is a good power supply , I'm thinking about all modes am , fm , ssb all running legal I would be very interested on what you think is a decent and reliable power supply . Thanks Fred
Hi Here. uk.banggood.com/20W-Magnetic-QRP-Antenna-Loop-Antenna-for-HF-Transceivers-ICOM-705-5-30MHz-76-108MHZ-110-150MHZ-400-~-450MHZ-p-1973840.html?imageAb=1&RUclips&p=HQ241968741511202201&akmClientCountry=GB&a=1691777467.1461&akmClientCountry=GB&cur_warehouse=CN
They're a bit shoddy those loops, you would have much better luck with a real magloop that uses a matching loop and single air space cap or vacuum cap. Me and my dad used to make them for the lower HF bands back in the 90's
The wife will think it's a bargain keeping you occupied for hours and out of her way. From a radio point of view not so much - one for the back of the cupboard ? I have a mag loop that I use on 10 sometimes - it covers other bands - and can get Europe crystal clear on SSB with 10 watts transmit and receive by 2EORO . Cost circa £120 and is brilliantly made. I know it will do 11 but do not use it for that. The difference ? Made by someone who knows what they are doing ? Kudos for persevering but it is doomed to fail because it is designed wrong for transmit. M7BLC
i ordered one on amazon 124.00 canadian on should be getting it thursday i listen a lot all over the place and like to experiment with antennas have a 10 watt chinease qrp all mode hf transeiver name is ron ve1-???
Great videos Fred. Try rotating the loop and id put a earth wire on. Keep up the good work.
Nice going Fred, thanks for sticking it out with the loop. 😀

Thanks Alan. Luton, hope to catch you on air some time bud.
These aerials are directional just like a beam. Cheers from old George
Well, it was interesting, with a quite good result at last. Well done Fred, thanks for the video!

Hi Fred, i found your channel yesterday. I'm hooked.
A good 3 videos Fred.
Mag loops work well for their size.

Hi. Yes i thought the same. A high rise flat with a balcony should work well.

Yes your correct i forgot that fact.

A loop is a directional antenna. Maybe he will hear you better if you turn the antenna until 90 degree
73 30BM01
Now you’ve did your best with loop next test see what power you can run through it until it fries, 50w prob be good enough lol
Don't forget a magloop fed at the bottom like that is horizontally polarised.
Have you seen the ERMAK sdr transceiver kit? It looks awesome.🤩 I would get one if you could buy it already fully assembled
Good evening just a question where do you put a antenna matcher it's a zetagi mm27
With the loop tuned you should not need an additional matcher. However if you do it would be RADIO-SWR METER- MATCHER-ANTENNA.
Did you try rotating the loop?
Well said took the words right out of my mouth
Hi no i did not. Something to try in the future.

A decent magloop is best worked on hf
They're a bit shoddy those loops, you would have much better luck with a real magloop that uses a matching loop and single air space cap or vacuum cap. Me and my dad used to make them for the lower HF bands back in the 90's
Yes i think you right.
Thats just a loop antenna Not a proper Mag loop ( No small loop inside the main loop) and it needs to be rotated to get the best signal.
There's various ways to feed them.
G4GHB.
Don't waste your time with a magnetic loop and put up a dipole. done that , know better now. lol
The wife will think it's a bargain keeping you occupied for hours and out of her way. From a radio point of view not so much - one for the back of the cupboard ? alot of expense and faff and about as "good" as the 2ft Bazooka of the 80s..
only of interest for a QrP and rx antenna around HF...
Imho...
I think Fred's just having fun trying stuff out whilst providing us with a bit of entertainment 🎉
A handheld PMR is better than this.
