FUNNY THING: Frederick Law Olmsted JR, son of Frederick, in 1911 designed the original plans for the city I live, Torrance, in and again in the early 1920's designed the Malaga Cove Plaza, in Palos Verdes Estates, just in the next town from me. The Malaga Cove Plaza and surrounding area, it is said, remains one of the most beautiful urban locations in the South Bay to this day. Ollie, this was the first video about some of the history of the UK that had, somewhat, of a tie-in to where I live. Thanks for another interesting watch.
@@BeeHereNowuk Just to let you know, I don't live in the Malaga Cove Plaza area - that for the people with more $$$ than me. Torrance, the next city over is more "average" people like us. lol
In Liverpool it's common knowledge (or at least among people I've spoken to) that Birkenhead park was an influence for Central Park and (I believe) the first park in the UK created for and given to the workers of a city. It's still a beautiful park today and I didn't have a clue that the bridge was the last in the UK with the original wooden design. Can't wait until next time I go there. Thanks for the information as always so interesting and detailed.
Thanks Ollie! Your videos are great wether you're out and about or studio based you make great content mate. Sorry it's not much but every little helps mate
As an ex-pat Brit, and life long Liverpool FC fan, living in NYC, this is fascinating. I actually live right across the street from Prospect Park in Brooklyn, which was also designed by Olmsted. I never knew it was 'inspired' by the Birkenhead park. Thanks so much for informing us! oh, and ignore the smooth-brained haters commenting on the video, ignorance is bliss, apparently!
Fantastic video. I made a youtube short on this very subject. I'm from Birkenhead and have spent countless hours in that park. The central park connection is something the Birkenhead locals take pride in.
I am from (living in) Liverpool on the other side of The River Mersey to Birkenhead,. Being 57 and having relations in Birkenhead & Wallasey, and relationships with women there as well, I only have one memory of being in the park with my relations in the early 1970s ... Its time to get on the ferry with my bike, and take a good look at the place!.
Great Ollie...the ruling (political) class today could do worse than think about the 'mental-health' of the workers, not sure a new park would be enough these days though. I've walked through Central Park back in the 1980's, indeed, it's a like a little bit of gentle countryside in the middle of a concrete jungle. Hope you're keeping cool, all the best!
@@lynneleverton8825 Really? I do hope so, it wasn't too good in the 90's when I last saw it, I now live in Manchester and have done for many years now, the place really does deserve better than what neglect it had years ago. It is the Worlds first proper public park and so has great historical significance and should never be allowed to fall into ruin. Similarly I see Everton in your name there which brings me to Everton FC or moreso Goodison Park which is the Worlds first ever purpose built football ground. For that reason alone Goodison Park should never be allowed to fall into ruin or be demolished and/or re-developed, Goodison Park must stay where and as it is for historically significant reasons.
@@Emilio_Garcia I would be very interested to know this, also, as I've seen much of the world and I can't think of a better-designed park. Perhaps the Vondelpark in Amsterdam, but it's so much smaller and less central to the city that surrounds it.
@@CinemaDemocratica I can think of a few off the top of my head. What Hyde Park London, Tiergaten Berlin, Stanley Park Vancouver, Kings Park, Perth. All central, all large, all well designed (in their own ways).

Fascinating! I'll never visit New York but I'm about to add Birkenhead Park to my list of places to go!
Thanks for this video - all this was new to me.
Another enjoyable and informative video. Keep up the good work.
I have been meaning to go to Birkenhead to see it for years. I will go this August - you've rekindled my interest ! Thanks.
Ah cool, thanks mate. It's gorgeous on a sunny day. Little though
@paulwilson you might want to lower your expectations buddy
Thoroughly enjoyed this. Top marks.
Thank you very much!
Another fantastic video Ollie
Thanks very much Dave

Imagine Birkenhead that could be like New York City with neighbouring Liverpool. That would be interesting.
Yeah that would have been amazing

And now, you know.
I can imagine it's a bit of a dump now but growing up in the 70's and 80's Birkenhead Park was another World to be explored on a daily basis.
It's beautiful and I believe a UNESCO world heritage sight now

Are you sure Birkenhead was the first? A little park in Derby claims to be first and so does one somewhere in the midlands.
Oh interesting! That's what I've read but I'll definitely look into the other ones and correct if I'm wrong. Thanks for letting me know!
