Thank you. I bought this light on September 11 2020 and since then, I've been wondering how to fix the soft diffuser. Your video just taught me how. Thank you. This is so informative/enlightening and I will always return back to it when confused. Thank you
Peace Steve. This is THE BEST product review i’ve seen on RUclips. Its insane...this is the product review PROTOTYPE! Thank you, lifetime sub earned my man.
Just had to pause to check the affiliate links, check the price, subscribe, like and comment... lemme go back in and finish watching now, -but seriously I’m a beginning filmmaker and these are just wht I needed thanks for the honest, simplicity and informative review... you’ve truly got a gift... great review, you’ve earned a customer over the cheaper neewer alternative 🤔
These have really become indispensable for us over here, we end up using them for more and more things as time goes by. At 100% Saturation, these can really throw a lot of color!
Just a tip. Instead of taking the time to create a text for every time stamp in the beginning. Just get the information and put the timestamps in the description. RUclips will automatically create them for the video and make it easier for you and the viewer :)!! Great video though !!!
This is a very informative review. I really enjoyed the the short sketches you did to simulate all the effects. But how do I know you wasn't really watching the TV .....?? 😀
sorry to be so off topic but does anybody know of a tool to log back into an Instagram account..? I was stupid forgot the account password. I would appreciate any assistance you can give me.
@Diego Philip Thanks so much for your reply. I found the site through google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff atm. Takes a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Brilliant review. Loved the effort gone to in producing this awesome video! New Subscriber here. I’m in the process of upgrading my ManCave Studio with theses lights. Cheers from Western Australia 🇦🇺👍🏻
Its just a cheap Power DeWise Lav Mic from Amazon. They used to be quite a bit cheaper but, once the word got out that they sounded pretty good, they started going up. I used it wired for a while, now I just use it plugged into a Rhode Wireless Go,
Good review...but you've hit one pet peeve of mine (common to most every movie though). Thunder and lightning rarely coincide. Just being nitpicky, since I can't hate on the review otherwise :-)
The Lav Mic is actually a cheap model that was recommended to me off Amazon. I was a little skeptical at first because of the price but, it has turned out to be one of the best I have used. Its wired so if you want to get farther away from the camera, you will have to get a shielded 1/8" extension cable like I did. This is the one I use: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01AG56HYQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I just run it down my back.
@@Featherlightstudio Thank you. Checking out the Lav now! Please keep these videos coming that was honestly the best Product Review I've ever seen and I learned a lot from your examples.
Im getting these lights in a 3 pack - Thank goodness how many months have I been searching for the right ones?? If you can advice on the best value bright light I will be grateful - I was going for either the Pixel XC200 but the godox V300 is way too expensive - I would prefer a compact system with a battery - The godox s60 looks like it does not have that much power.... They have started cheating by putting the power value at 0.5m away instead of the standard 1m.....
The 800D are LED panel lights and only 40 watts so, not super bright especially compared to a COB style light like the Good v300, LED Panels are great for small setups or adding back and fill lights but, one of them by itself won't replace a full size key light like the Godox
Nice video! I own a couple as well. Do you also use 800Ds it in the shot in the beginning, when the lights are still in the bag? If not, Id greatly appreciate if you could share what you use there as key and background light. Thanks!
My main key light that I always use is the Neewer 21 Inch BiColor Studio Round LED Flapjack. Its great for wide soft light but, it throws light literally everywhere so you have to be specific about where you use it and its hard to flag off. The GVM800D's actually make pretty good key lights as well, not quite as soft but, if you throw an extra layer of diffusion over them, they are pretty close and you can flag them off with the included barn doors, unlike the Neewer.
Each light can be any color you want. You set the behavior of the light by setting its channel. If you want the lights to behave the same, set the two lights to the same channel.
I’m not aware of any kind of firmware update function on the 800D. If someone has found a way, please post below. It would very surprising to see advanced features like firmware updating on LED RGB lights in this price category.
Im so new at this. I was wondering about your professional opinion. What do you think about the GVM RGB 800D vs Neewer 660 RGB ? They are both very similar. Was wondering which one you recommend?
The 660 is a good light as well and very similar in build quality with an all aluminum case but, has metal barn doors as opposed to the plastic barn doors on the 800D. However, the GVM 800D is less expensive, has better built in effects, and both are rated as 40 watt fixtures and have similar brightness. The 2 packs of each manufacture have comparable accessories although the case for the GVM 800D is considerably nicer and well laid out. It really comes down to if you want to pay more for the all metal barn doors.
@@broodsincorner I had the Neewer 660 before I got the GVM 800D and there was actually only a slight difference in overall brightness. I expected the 660 to be much brighter and they were not.
Gotcha, thanks for the info. I figured there would be an increase in brightness on the 660's, but I'm surprised that say you say it's not very much (although both lights are rated for the same wattage, so I guess that makes sense).
I believe a product should work with the brand accessories that are available for it. This is certainly not the case with the softbox for the 800D.Just do not waste your time and money on this accessory. Even the instructions don’t match the actual assembly, and don’t include a mention of the metal rods needing to be affixed , let alone how to get the loose rods to stay in their sockets, or worse actually find the corresponding pockets in the fabric edging of the softbox. They are either poorly constructed or worse absent altogether and this is the case on two identical products I have purchased. I didn’t get as far as attaching the scrim, there was no point, as the box itself doesn’t stay in place given the loose fitting of the rods and so you will be very lucky to get as far as fitting the diffuser. The frustration of a poorly designed product like this just negates any positives I may currently harbour about the 800D lights themselves. I may just return the whole lighting kit. Around £500 for a kit that cannot be used as advertised is Ridiculous and outrageous.
As this review is just for the 2 light kit and stands, I can't comment on any of the other accessories for the complete brand line. However, I have found with these lights, that's its far easier to simply clip light weight scrims to the front of the barn doors than to hassle with soft boxes in general. Provides about the same diffusion in a fraction of the time.
@@Featherlightstudio please don’t think I’m blaming you for my disappointment, but you may want to consider my findings when, as you say there are other perhaps easier and more reliable ways of softening the light. Interestingly I found a review on Amazon which echoed my own opinion and the writer expressed a very similar level of frustration.
Buyer beware the "Bluetooth" NOT WiFi function is a mess. Like he said in the video the App loses connection when the phone goes to sleep or you turn off the light the bluetooth doesn't remember the device so you have to connect first in the Settings then again in the App to get it to work which is ridiculous because all my 15 bluetooth devices on my phone remembers and connection automatically, the GVM does NOT, very disappointing (side note: my 10 year old $5 bluetooth shower speaker remembers and connects automatically when powered up).
GVM does not publish any lumen output data on their websites or manuals, not sure why exactly. They are surprisingly bright for their size and make a good smaller RUclips setup but they are not going to light an entire room if that’s what you mean.
My GVM 1200 doesn't connect automatically and loses connection every time my phone sleeps or I power off the lights, strange. I have to manually reconnect in the bluetooth in the Settings then again in the App to get it to work, not good.
Neither The GVM website nor the included Manual gives states any rated Lux or Lumen data, only the wattage draw of 40 watts. The 800D are very comparable to the Neewer 660 RGB as far as lumen output.
The most useful video-review for this lighting. Lots of good information....

Thanks! You sold me. I just wonder if it is flicker-free, or if slow motion footage will strobe due to flicker.
The GVM 800D had no flicker in any of the frame rates ( including 60fps and 120fps ) that we tried shooting under.
You should do a lighting tutorial... you’ve got my bucks... going to search thru a couple more of your videos... 👍🏽👍🏽
