This movie saved my life! Love Paxton, Hoffman, “Jonas Miller” he’s a night crawler, he’s in it for the money!
This movie is one of the most impactful movies on my childhood. To this day i still love meteorology because of this movie. I wanted to go to OU after high school but i could not get into their meteorology school cause you need to be the top 5% of your high school class. but i tried because of this movie
It's such a shame how mankind builds these nonsense walls and barriers up that stop people from achieving their dreams.
This film was up there with Jurassic Park for me as a kid. Great characters, stellar perfermances all around, great visual effects for the time, amazing one liners. Great to see this film finally get a 4k release. RIP Bill "The Extreme" Paxton and Philip Seymour Hoffman. "IT'S THE WONDER OF NATURE, BABY!!"

This 4k remaster even on digital is fantastic. To have a 30 year old movie look and sound like it came out recently was such a treat. I adore this movie and will look forward to having fun with the sequel in the same spirit. I hope they kept the adventure vibe.

I use to watch twister as a kid. That’s the movie that wanted me to be a storm chaser even till this day and I’m 35 yrs old.

Bonus note. The "shed destruction" scene near the end of the film has some of the best audio in cinema history. For years I used the DVD to show off my sound system.

I love Twister so much. It’s one of those movies like Jaws or Jurassic Park where I never get tired of it. I always watch it at least once a year
Back in the early 2000's I had a 32" Loewe planus TV (with the base unit) in white. Top of the range pioneer DVD player, Yamaha DSP-A1 home cinema reciever rogged up to a set of B&W speakers.
When people came round, they were in awe looking at the TV and the speaker's dotted around the room. Twister was one of the 3 movies I'd demonstrate to them the picture and soundtrack. The other 2 movies being Armageddon and the matrix.
After I finished the demo I'd find people still sitting there, silently wanting more.
You talking about inviting someone to listen to your system after they ask "Why do you have so many speakers?", etc. reminds me of when I was "showing off" my system with the Days of Thunder VHS and Dolby Surround. You took me back in time! :)
The director had originally said that the sound of the tornado was made to be a main character.

Got the 4K Blu-ray and watched Twister for first time today. Wow, the Atmos was top notch, movie was fun and highly engaging. How did I miss this in the 90s?? A must buy for any home theater fan. Sounded amazing in 7.2.4 audio. We need more movies to sound this good!!
1990 movies. What a great child hood I had.
Heard they originally wanted the “going green screen” to be properly green like the tornado phenomenon. But Jan didn’t have the tech at the time and was super thrilled to finally add that in properly for this film. It’s not even revisionism. And if it was what the director originally wanted then I am more than okay. It fits narratively and it’s not overboard like Lucas’ cuts of Star Wars.
I love that this was a first time watch for you! I strongly believe that movies need to come back to this level of fun and excitement. Twister is a perfect blockbuster. I saw this in the theater on release. What a ride!
This film won awards for its sound. Love to see that it’s still top tier.
There is a video by CarStarz on RUclips talking about 10 facts about the Ram Trucks they used while filming. Apparently all of them got destroyed after filming. Some had different engines. They had to use gasoline engines because the Diesel engines were too loud for filming. Even the trucks were slightly different depending on what scene you are watching. Sound was apparently piped in after the fact for the engines to make them all consistent.
Can’t wait to watch this in my small humble home theater when I get this next week. Nice review.
This is a VFX and audio masterpiece, but for me, this is the movie you put on if you want to illustrate to anyone just how good of an actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was early in his career before he started headlining movies. He absolutely disappears into what could otherwise be a thankless supporting role for giving exposition and comic relief
Phil was clearly having a BALL playing Dusty, laughing his ass off. From "the suck zone" to "You can really feel it with a telephoto lens!", Dusty's insane, DELIGHTFULLY insane!

Just watched this last week (older version) and even without ATMOS the movie did an awesome job making use of sound to immerse you in the storms.
I was fortunate to have seen this film in the theater opening night, and the audio was truly a life-changing experience for me. Incredible movie and epic performances from everyone. One of the best films featuring Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt, and so many supporting actors from Philip Seymour Hoffman to Cary Elwes, Alan Ruck, and Jami Gertz. And Mark Mancina's Americana score mixed with the backdrop of Van Halen's "Humans Being" song...you cannot beat this film. Cinema gold!

I remember watching it on theaters, I was a kid, it was the first time I ever got late to a movie, so even though I completely missed the whole beginning, it's still one of my most fond memories
Well, this is a must-buy. It's my brother's favorite movie; he watches it a few times a year, and I've seen it a hundred times myself. We just got back from a trip to Oklahoma where we visited the location where they filmed the drive-in theater scene. There's not much left, but a few buildings visible in the scene are still standing.
Good to know the 4K does this movie justice! It's a very fun, unique highlight of the '90s and deserves to be a quality viewing experience for today's audiences.
Does any one know how this new 4kUHD version compares to the remastered German release with Dolby Atmos? It was pretty wild as well. I wonder if they use the same audio track.

I was going to ask the same question. I have the German version, and though it's not 4K (it is HDR), the Atmos soundtrack kicks ass. Wondering if they just used the same Atmos track for the new version.
My understand is that it's not the same Atmos track.
I saw Twisters tonight in a great Dolby Atmos movie theater. Tremendous sound as you’d expect and the movie was really good too!! Pretty crowded too for a Tuesday night.

I LOVED this movie as a kid, admittedly I probably haven't seen this in at least 18 years or so, will be exciting to check it out again and see what I think of it now as an adult. Just bought this on 4K looking forward to watching it in the next week or so.

Hey Jeff When i worked at Circuit City back in the day..Twister and Jurassic Park were among the first DVDs released to showcase that 5.1 sound..and they started Demo rooms specifically to showcase the sound and picture of these 2 movies..thats where the terms Demo- disc and Reference sound came from..People heard that and said wow i need 5 speakers and a sub to duplicate that sound in my living room at home..Started a whole surround sound industry with of course Dolby Atmos being the latest and greatest. My Dvd of Twister saw so much action so its great to see this in 4k and Atmos its a day 1 pickup for me..The old surround sound guy!! Great video review Jeff thanks.👍👍

I saw this in theaters on opening day with my ex wife and loved it. Bill Paxton was such a wonderful actor. I preordered the steelbook when it first went up for preorder and I love the slipcover so much that I just ordered a copy of it from Gruv 🤣🤣

Jan de Bont is Dutch. His name is pronounced “Yawn” not “Jan”. He also directed Speed and was the cinematographer for several standout films like Die Hard. This is why his movies are so much fun.
I went to this movie the day it was released. I had so much fun that I decided to go the next day again! Can’t wait for this to be released in the Netherlands!
First, I gotta say I was lucky enough to see this in the theater, and I thought at the time it was awesome. I remember DVD was such a new format, and I was an early adapter to the format. During that time, I was a manager for BLOCKBUSTER MUSIC. My location was one of the first out 4 locations in Indianapolis to carry DVD. I was actually responsible for ordering inventory, so as soon as Warner Brothers released it, I snagged 10 copies. Warner Brothers had limits. I made sure I worked that day so I could get one. The crazy thing is I never bought the Blu-ray when it came out. So I'm really looking forward to picking this one up on 4K UHD. I'm glad to hear Warner Brothers did it right remastering the film. Thank you again for your review it makes me so ready to see it again.
I saw this in the theater as a kid. I was terrified of big storms at the time and I made it maybe 5 min before asking my dad if we could leave. We spent the rest of the time in software etc and the candy store.

A true fun classic. It’s difficult to describe what a phenomenon this movie was when new. Hooky that the new one keep the spirit of slightly silly fun that doesn’t insult the audience and takes us for a ride.
Let’s be real here, the sound of this film has always been great, since the DVD release, it’s NOT just because of ATMOS. I had a surround system back then and it was always great and I loved to show it off. I get “today’s” generation always wanna take credit for what’s best. Bottom line is this the best 4K of the year by far.
So jealous wish I could experience Twister for the first time in 4K Dolby Vision!!

This release somehow missed my radar and I am so excited for this release. I have only got the dvd and have never bought the Blu-ray. Hopefully it hits us over here in Australia. It's the extreme!!!
Finally got my copy in over the weekend. Aside from the cringey sound effects they added in, the Atmos mix is very good but my main reason for switching to this disc over the Turbine mix is the video presentation. It's excellent. Very clear, excellent color, cool brightness and VFX changes (don't care for the exaggerated green hail core glows. I live in Tornado alley and hail cores are green sometimes for sure but they don't turn the entire landscape green). At first, I felt very strange with how dark the movie is but I started to like it part way through, and then agreed it was a fantastic change by the end. There are also several instances of VFX changes to make the sky seem more real, that was nice (since most of the movie was shot in broad daylight). The first tornado experience is made pretty incredible by these changes.
It's the definitive edition for Twister for sure.
I was 22 when “Twister” came out. I managed to see it (rare occasion) with my father (since passed). He gave this review thusly: “If I wanted to watch a (expletive) married couple fight for two (expletive) hours, I would have stayed home with your (expletive) mother!” I knew if I laughed out loud, which I wanted to, I’d get socked in the jaw. So, family disfunction aside, I well remember “Twister” just for that, a night spent with the old man.
He didn’t live to see these 4K upgrades and new home theater sound systems, but he would have loved it.
God I loved this film when it originally came out. I think I saw it 3 or 4 times in the theater with my friends when I was in high school.

I believe this was one of the first movies ever released in 5.1 and when I saw it in the theaters that sound was so freaking awesome. That low ominous growl sent chills up my spine. I still don’t have an atmos setup yet, nor do I have this movie in my collection 🤦♂️ Amazon here I come 😂.

This was THE film back in the day. I'm from a tornado area and the effects of this film were spot on.
When Atmos first came out it just wasn't worth the hype.
Now I've seen two, Gravity and the others, both really great. Can't wait to try this one.
My favorite Laserdisc, I just watched the DVD on my new pana820 and my friends would tease me for purchasing widescreen versions but they acknowledge now my choices.

I loved this movie ever since I saw it when I was a kid in the 90s. Probably my favourite disaster movie. Pure popcorn entertainment with a fantastic cast. Really looking forward to the sequel this month. Gotta feeling its going to be another popcorn fun entertaining movie. Glen Powell is a star in the making.

Twister was one of the first movies I had bought on VHS, then one of the early movies I got on DVD. It has always had a special spot for me as one of those great 90’s Summer Popcorn Action flicks. I would say in the same category that I put Independence Day. Just fun watches over and over.

I thought Shane Lee's Atmos tracker showed that this film was all static with no panning sound so I'm surprised you were so blown away by it. I'm definitely picking it up to see for myself. Glad you finally saw this, I'm shocked you've never seen it before.

@@liutungwei5160 I agree. That's why I have still not replaced my original 5.1 Ac3 THX Laserdisc as all the other near field mixes of the 2000's are not even close in their immersion. I suspect the original THX DVD would have the same wide dynamic range mix and judging by Jeff's reaction to the sound, this new 4k is bringing back those highlights of the soundstage instead of the flat sounding Blu Ray.
I'm so happy this was released on 4k. I figured it would be considering the sequel Twisters just around the corner. The only thing I found that was odd was I popped this in for my family and I the other night in our brand new Panasonic "up to date firmware" and everything 4k UHD player. And it wouldn't play. It would play the Warner Bros. intro and the main menu, but when I clicked ok on play, it would resort back to the players' menu. It's like it's resisting it. Even when I went to the scene, selection it would do the same thing. However, on my Sony UHD player in the back, it would play just fine. I even tried plugging up a flash drive on the front of the Panasonic player, and still nothing. Ever hear of any cases like that? At least it plays in my Sony one. I don't know. It's just weird.

@latingringo89 yep. It just so happened that I had an extra Sony 4k player laying around. Hooked it up up front. Played fine. We've already watched it and am doing the review for it now. It's all good.
@freecstyle4784 so is it a Panasonic issue? I just ordered the 4k but I have a Panasonic and now I'm worried it won't play! Lol
@latingringo89 the last I heard is that they are fixing the problem with those discs at Warner Brothers. That was a little over a week ago. And it's not just a Panasonic issue. I heard people with the LG players are having the same problem. So, it may just be the discs. Sorry to worry you. Lol. At least you been warned. 😄

I have an old Onkyo 5.1 surround sound system I've had since 2003, still works great, but want Atmos. What is a good 5.1 system for an upgrade with Atmos?
We have an ONKYO 5.1.2 Atmos speaker system with a Panasonic 4K Blu-ray player... So, when we do pickup this release we're sure it'll sound great.
