A couple of thoughts on the tool: The side of the shovel is sharpened to use for cutting wood or roots. The knife appears to be pretty lame except for the following scene: You are stranded in the woods and run across another hunter who is lost. He has a 6 pack of cold beers, but no way to open them. You whip out the knife, and using the bottle opener on it, open the beers, You both get drunk and stumble out of the woods looking for more beer. Simple eh?

It's called an Entrenching Tool. It's used for digging Fox Holes. They have been around since WWII. Now, they are updated like cheap survival knives with fishing gear that never catch fish, survival crap that will likely get you killed trying to use it, and possibly a cheap fire starter that will likely actually start a fire! Over the decades, I've had 3 of them break on me, just shovelling sand, attempting to dig out my 4WD from a wash. The ONE little shovel that HASN'T broken, is a simple cheap wooden handled Garden Spade, that I have always also carried in the back of my Jeep.
@@Ethanthefenceman I'm not sure if they "meant" to turn it into a full on kids channel but I agree it's just not nearly as cool without Grant. Grant was willing to mess with mad science, and do projects that were often times big and almost always at least somewhat dangerous (which is what made them so cool) mixed in with some smaller scale shenanigans such as match head rockets (which I tried out myself and they are as fun IRL as they look in the video) Sure he had his random videos too (he was and is the King of Random!) like making gummies out of Kool-Aid but even then the quality of these videos were always incredible! The new King of Random channel just doesn't seem to have that same charm, it seems more like they are saying "look this is happening, I don't know why and I don't really know how to explain it" more often then not. But just the same, I am grateful them being on the channel keeps Grant's legacy alive. May he forever rest in peace.

My guess would be that small knife is more for a spear type action for maybe hunting shallow water fish or if you trap a small animal to eat quick easy kill with a reach.
Hey Tyler, great job on the video. I just want to say that the knife doesn't have a saw it's actually called serrations. The difference is that serrations are for rope and food such as bread, fish, and steak. And a was is for wood. 👍

1, That 90° adjustment is to use it as a pick when digging. 2, The knife is cheap crap, throw it away. Even if you did hone a sharper edge, it wouldn't stay sharp. Stick with a good quality belt knife for survival (I recommend ColdSteel dot com. More expensive, but for very good reasons.) 3, The edge on the shovel head is not a cutting knife, it's a chopping blade (hatchet) for chopping thicker pieces of firewood. 4, You do not have 2 different handles. They attach together to make one long handle for more leverage. 5, Anything labeled "survival" is a cheap crap gimmick. If you really need a folding shovel, go to the Army surplus. It doesn't have the gimmicks and will be sturdy enough for your Grandkids to inherit and use.
90 degree shovel is very very useful when you are to dig a hole fast. you can kind of chop the ground. It also is way more useful as you do not have to stand up
I like it but it seems a little cheep. You should try sharping it then do the bottles again. It’s always nice to see you do your videos. Keep up the good work!!
I haven't seen the wish shovel in use before however I know the design is used by military forces as a practical all in one tool that can dig a trench.
I think it might be better than a Coghlans folding camp shovel. The handle is longer and it seems to lock the shovel better. I have a Coghlans that does not lock the head well and makes it difficult if not dangerous to use. Similarly the Colman shovel handle is too short but the head does lock in well. Almost all the sharp edges on the cheap shovels and knives are dull. Sharpening is a given. The question is how well the blades hold an edge. I like the additional tools, although in the wilderness there is not much use for a glass breaker. The cases might be another issue. Most of the cheap cases start falling apart right away if not out of the box. As far as bringing it backpacking it might be prohibitively heavy and bulky but if it is durable it might be useful on a prospecting trip. Having said that I wouldn’t buy it without having reliable reviews from someone who used it for that purpose.
I bought this shovel as a emergency tool for my SUV - it´s very compact with a lot of functions. Maybe you be pleased to have it in some kind of situation!
I don't know what steel those cheap knives are made out of but I always wondered if it is possible to sharpen and heat treat to make it better and more practical.
8:28 "But if you're like, in a hardcore survival situation, like say you're gonna be somewhere for like-- 14 days, this aint' gonna cut it." *literally*
Blades and other sharp objects usually are delivered dull when shipped in the mail. Which is why you sharpen them once you receive them😂. So your cut tests had a handicap because you didn't sharpen the blades..
Nice review. One thing I find about these reviews is that they are done from a very generic position ie "is this thing any good?" rather than a specific case scenario ie keeping it in the car for those "just in case" situations in winter driving on long road trips. I'd be interested to see it reviewed in specific case situations like that and see if the opinion on it changes at all. How well does it work for digging your car out of s snow drift or get you that emergency fire (ie dig a hole, cut/split some brush, spark up a fire)? A real-world sort of thing.
Those shovels are something you toss in a bug out bag because you can't fit a high quality tool of every type in a bag. You should sharpen them first and also put a small knife sharpener in the bug out bag as well, like a Smith's Pocket Pal.
The knife was probably the same sharpness as the shovel to begin with. You just dulled it more with the cardboard box before you tried it on the paracord. (But, I agree... they should've sharpened it a LOT better than it was.)
