    Let’s be clear to all those welders, not everybody owns a welding machine in the world. Not everybody knows how to weld. This is a lot more practical for a person with basic tool knowledge who needs a small project done. Just like me.

    • @joel4282

      He spent the money on a grinder so why wouldn't he spend the same amount on a cheap DIY welder? Oh he has a welder because the rod he was using to point with is a welding rod. Also the title is misleading as it's not spoken about as it's a waste of money when talking about structural steel work

  • @squatchmouth

    Real welder here, and the real reason we don’t tell these secrets is because well we don’t waste time building things this way. Time is money and wasting time on a project means it’s costs me and the customer more to get it done. Also tube not pipe. Everyone knows that.

    • @tomt9543
      @tomt9543 4 года назад +1

      Why do all these type videos call it “profile pipe” instead of the square and rectangular tubing that it is? Certified welder here with over 40 years of experience, and I can tell you that the American Welding Society has no “tab and slot” joints in any of their procedure books! I always worked under D15.1. Oh well, as long as he’s happy, all is well!

    • @squatchmouth

      Tom T I’ve always worked under D17.1 or the various structural codes. It’s always tubing and not pipe.

      @@jlkenzo7551 No. what it does do is run up labor costs doing something that gives no added strength to the joint over that of a standard butt joint! If you’re building something for yourself, that’s fine, but if you’re in business doing this stuff you can’t be competitive making all these extra preps to an otherwise simple joint! Time is money!!

  • @Joe-yr1em
    @Joe-yr1em 4 года назад +2

    Takes way too long and not as strong as welding and getting proper fusion between the two metals but if you don't have a welder, very cool idea. angle grinders are much cheaper so it could be a solution. Me personally, I'd recommend they get a cheap harbor freight flux core welder and some magnetic 90° angles and just weld it together. You can get them for around $300 and then you have a tool you can use on dozens of other projects or side hustles to make money

    • @joel4282
      @joel4282 3 года назад

      @@Papa-Rah nope. The extra cuts can easily create more errors with spacing resulting in blowouts (hole where the molten metal has let go) a crap fillet or butt weld will hold longer than the folded (weakened) tube. This is something that an artisan may do for looks but anyone doing a job understands that time=money and if it is weight bearing it should be up to code so that the welder is not screwed when it fails

    Can understand why supposed welders don't talk about it..

  • @dizimz
    @dizimz 4 года назад +2

    If you have fun making all these extra cuts, power to ya. But it’s not practical.
    Extra steps = extra mistakes. More mistakes = bigger gaps to fill and more wasted material.
    I see no reason to do this kind of joint unless you lack confidence in your welds or want to avoid welding altogether.

    • @Papa-Rah
      @Papa-Rah 3 года назад

      But what about doing this and then welding the pieces together ? Would this make it doubly strong ?

    • @dizimz
      @dizimz 3 года назад +1

      @@Papa-Rah. Welds can easily have tensile strengths over 60,000 psi and shear over 40,000
      Doing this "slot and insert" method spends more time cutting and creates more room for error. Errors will compromise your project long before a weld gives out.
      The next issue is blow out. Because you cut 2 slots to slide one tube into the other, you may have a gap that needs filling. If the gap is too big, and the tube is thinner (like maybe 1/16" - 1/8" ) processes like flux core and certainly stick may blow a hole making the weld weaker.
      Lastly, if you're being paid to do a project. Time is money. This method adds 0 practical benefit and creates dramatically more mistakes. Imagine doing this 4 times to make a basic platform... Imagine blowing a hole and having to fill it... Imagine warping caused by the extra heat from filling the hole... This makes a 5 hour project into a 10 or 15 hour project.
      If you have fun doing it, power to ya, but frankly it's dumb.

    Why is everyone blasting on this guy? Ok, maybe he shouldn’t use the word “welders” in the title, I get that. I find very useful what he just showed here. I completely get that we live in modern age and welding is quicker but not everyone has welding equipment or the knowledge to use it. I’m not going to buy welding equipment to use it once in a blue moon. I’m more than happy to use this type of joint in case if I ever need because I have all the tools needed.
    When people first started using/working on metal, there wasn’t welding equipment. Bridges, railways, steam trains just to name a few were made not using any welding at all and they still exist nowadays.
