I never even knew that Americans don't like socialists (or their weird view of socialism) I assumed their irrational hatred was kept to people branded as communists. It seems really alien that calling someone a socialist in america is insulting/makes you want to vote for them less

There is no such thing as a 'free' healthcare system under Capitalism only Cuba and DPRK have truly free healthcare systems paid by state revenue and not subsidies by taxes. Also, USSR collapsed because they decentralised the economy and the living standards fell drastically when they did so. Saying decentralised economy is good for you is like saying cancer is good for everyone and therefore we should have life goals of getting cancer. DDR(GDR) was a Socialist state employing Consumer Socialism which was still centralised, DDR had the highest living standard of any Socialist state because the people were prioritised over hte military, the DPRK today have a form of Consumer Socialism based on the DDR one. People can still have their own business however it works quite different from a Capitalist business, I am not going to go into details because you probably are not interested in how Socialism work at all.
