Terry Kath was the soul of Chicago. After his tragic and untimely death in the late 70s, the bands sound was more pop or top 40s. Peter Cetera sang this song. Terry Kath and Robert Lamb also did a lot of vocals. Terry Kath had the deep soulful voice. One other point, I've always considered their drummer as very underrated.

Please check out the song Beginnings which has a great percussion outro and the song Introduction the first song from their first album. It showcases what the world was about to experience from the band. Agree that the live Tanglewood Version is a must listen but it is raw sounding, not as polished as this. True Story! Chicago was playing in a small club in the early days, and Jimi Hendrix happened to be there. During the sound check they played this song. Lead guitarist Terry Kath was just killing it. Hendrix came over to singer/keyboardist Robert Lamm and said, "Whoever your guitar player is, don't ever lose him. He's a better player than I am!"
Sadly, Terry was playing Russian roulette while sitting with the manager. The manager was getting very nervous and asked Terry to please put the gun down. Terry laughed and said "Don't worry, it's not even loaded!" He put it to his head and pulled the trigger. He had forgotten there was a bullet in the chamber. He died instantly...

    They transcend genre.
And they take you to another place. I love it that you picked up on the toms with the trombone. That’s one of my favorite parts of the song and all of the parts are my favorite parts lol .
    Thanks for the greatness ❤❤❤

Early Chicago is a unique combination of rock, jazz, funk and improv. Like many bands of this era who were beholden to record company usury, Chicago switched to a much more pop- oriented style later on in order to make money. However, this album in particular, showcases a band at their free-wheelin' best. Top-notch songwriting, musicianship and vocals all the way through. So damn tasty...

Great gift from your wife, and a great song to start digging into Chicago with! More music my parents had. My suggestion for the next Chicago song: “Feeling Stronger Every Day” ❤ Personally, I don’t care much for the light ballads they did in the 80’s; I would skip them, lol.

No weak links in Chicago. Chicago was all the rage late 60's to 70's. It was a really fresh energy. I was a kid and I just remember everyone who heard Chicago was in the park in a perfect sunny day having a big happy picnic. Their music took you to a place. A gathering full of jubilation and interesting people. A birth of Progressive People happened around this band.

I’m 75 years old. When this album came out, I was in a R&B horn band (2 saxes, trumpet, trombone, organ, guitar, bass, vocalist). We did Jame Brown, Sam and Dave, etc.
But when THIS came out (along with Blood, Sweat, and Tears)… our minds were blown!
BTW - I saw the original band twice… Danny Seraphine (on drums) was a beast! So underrated.

The term "classic" was made for a song like this. Since you enjoyed this sound, please please check out Blood, Sweat, and Tears. I bought their album with one of my very first paychecks when I was 15 working at a local five and dime store. Blood Sweat and Tears have more famous songs like Spinning Wheel, And When I Die, and God Bless the Child, but my favorite is Lucretia MacEvil. I really think you'd LOVE that one. If you listen to the studio version don't stop the song too soon at the end or you miss an extended jam!

They have three horn players Lee Loughnane on trumpet, Walt Parazaider on sax/flutes/other woodwinds, and James Pankow on trombone. The late Terry Kath on guitar (gotta hear the live 1970 tanglewood version) and Peter Cetera on bass and vocals, also Robert Lamm on keyboards and Danny Seraphine on drums. They were really tight on their records.

story behind this song: lyrics/composition by Robert Lamm (keyboards/piano/one of the 3 lead singers), released as a single from their 2nd album - Chicago II, writing a song to incorporate and innovate all ingredients of the band, and especially to let the guitarist, Terry Kath, "air it out" with the many styles he could play. The time refers to either 3:35 or 3:34 am - eyes tired and red from pulling an all-nighter to write this song. some circles have said it was about drug use - that is a big Negative and is hogwash. Terry Kath's solo here is the catalyst as to the reply from Jimi Hendrix when asked how he felt being regarded as the best guitarist of the era, to which he replied: "I wouldn't know. maybe you should ask that cat in Chicago, he's better than me". The guitar and drums (Danny Seraphine) make this song. The lead vocals and harmonies are pretty awesome too. The horns - oh yes. The guitar solo was not included in most radio air- plays - made the song too long. Next: Make me Smile, Dialogue Part I & II, Feeling Stronger every day.

Their first two albums are two of the best ever made. They had some great songs afterwards but their albums were never as good. They had a unique sound and huge energy their first few years. Three vocalists, three great horn players who wrote too and a rhythm section that was super tight. The guitar player was a master at staying in the pocket when he played rhythm lines. They opened for Jimi Hendrix and he loved them. Their guitar player died tragically and then the band turned into a sappy ballad making outfit for the most part. Their is no other band that I love so much and then later dislike than Chicago.

Promoted by Jimi as his opening act. They were the Chicago Transit Authority which this song was from first album. Dive into this album many great songs. The CTA sued on name use and they became Chicago! Horns were major players in bands back then. If you had horns they had to be tight! Chicago blew the doors off. Power drums, killer horns, great lead singers they became a force the first 4 albums! They’re sound softened later as members died and left band. As a Chicagoan it was great to witness! Chiguy

My loved their music so much that his nickname soon became "Chicago" and you'd rarely catch him without their signature emblem on his T-shirts. It's about being too high, at a party, at 3:34 or 3:35am. "Should I try to do some more? Twenty five or six to four..."
I am not a huge Chicago fan, and I love this song. Rocks hard and tight, horns and all. Saturday in the park is pretty lean and nice too. Their later hits were softer, as I recall.
