I live not far from Nicko and only about 10 min from his excellent rib joint, Rock n Roll Ribs. While I've never met him myself, I know a number of people that have and they all have nothing but positive things to say about the guy. Thanks, Nicko. Thanks, Pete.
Touring and playing for any metal drummer has to be very challenging at any age let alone into your 70s. Amazing career glad I got to see him play live!
It’s good to see a tribute due to retirement and not the for the other reason. Nicko has done the right thing. I hope he’s feeling all the genuine thanks and love the fans have for him. Thanks SoT for doing this and UP THE IRONS! 🤘
Don't forget that due to his recent stroke he's on record saying he couldn't play some Maiden classics as well or at all. It takes balls to step aside something like Maiden. Nicko clearly has some.
@@MrEnsiferum77 He had a stroke (perhaps you don't believe that) and the resulting limitations to his playing have been evident on the most recent tour. He is 72 years old and has been in the band without any significant disagreements, financial or otherwise for 42 years.
Hard to believe ANY rock/metal drummer can play like that in their 70s. Drumming takes a lot of physical toll. Saw Nicko many times with Maiden. Legend. Enjoy your retirement Nicko. You earned it.
Greetings from the UK...My very first ever gig was Rush,February 13th 1978-Leicester here in the UK,i was 17...My very first Iron Maiden gig was October 6th 1979 at The Boat Club here in Nottingham.I`ve been a lifelong fan of both bands since those days and seen both bands live at least 140 times each...When Rush retired i thought the whole world had ended, when Neil Peart died i was even worse and it was if an old friend had died..I pretty much feel the same about Nicko retiring but at least he`s not retired from recording so there is still hope...All the best Nicko,we love you.
Niko will be missed. Actually tells a lot about him that he is making the call to step down rather than give a bad performance to the fans. He has been an amazing part of the Maiden line up. Thank you for all the years you gave and the awesome drumming.
This hit me hard. Nicko is one of my favorite drummers and maiden is one of my top 5 favorite bands . Hes doing the right thing . God bless you Nicko your awesome 👍🤘thanks for the tribute Peter 🙏
Thanks Pete! wonderful tribute to an amazing drummer and person, He will always be on my list of amazing drummers ( which you just did last month) he will be missed for sure..I'll need to stop by Rock N Roll Ribs in Boca once more
I think Nicko's stroke and its effect on his playing is what ultimately drove him to retirement. It's a miracle he was able to get through the entire Future Past Tour. I'm sure Simon Dawson will do a great job, but I'm really gonna miss seeing Nicko behind the kit.
One of my favourite bands (Streetwalkers....who grew out of Family) and their debut album, Downtown Flyers from 1975, has a very young Nico on drums (his first recording?). Understated yet solid. Enjoy your well deserved rest...
A great drummer and a lovely guy, by all accounts. I never got to meet him, but saw him live with Maiden on numerous occasions. I also saw him with Trust, supporting Maiden on the Killers UK Tour. That stroke that he had in January '23 seems to have been the catalyst for his decision. I read that the stroke paralysed him down his right hand side, from the shoulder down. And he only got back to fitness due to 'intensive physical therapy'. Playing a 2 hour set almost every night for 18 months or more will be very tough for him. So, this announcement is understandable. Thanks for the music, Nicko and enjoy your (semi) retirement.
Props to Nicko for making the courageous decision to put his health first when he knows he physically can't handle the touring anymore. He's leaving on his own terms! I'm very thankful I got to see him with Iron Maiden at least once!
Will miss Nicko (pronounced Nick-oh, not Knee-koh) but it is the right choice. Maiden fan sites had been documenting how he’d been struggling a bit on this tour. Can’t fault him, he has not fully recovered from a stroke. Awesome drummer for decades. Best interview in the band too, how about he continues as Maiden’s official spokesman!
I believe Nicko is only retiring from touring. Don't be surprised if they record a new album, he will play drums on it. Bruce said that he is still the Iron Maiden drummer on the last night of the tour.
Sad News... Nicko was really a very important part of Maiden apart from being one of my favorite drummers. I was lucky enough to see them play live in Buenos Aires last week, I never thought it would be the last time. I saw Iron Maiden about 8 times over the years...
I heard that he had some health problems and was thinking about retiring i also heard that he had a stroke as well and I recently saw a video of Nicko playing in a band hard rock band called Trust here on RUclips take care and Thank You again Pete.🎶🎤🎸🎸🎹🥁🎶
Pete, if you are ever in South Florida, Nicko has a rib restaurant down here called Rock n Roll Ribs. It is in Coral Springs, FL. Really cool place. He has an anniversary party at the restaurant and surrounding parking lot every year. It is usually the first Saturday in December, which would have been the day he played his last show with Maiden. I think it is postponed until next month. But if you are ever down here, you gotta check his place out. Really cool atmosphere. And great ribs.
There aren't many bands who have the integrity that Maiden do (whether you're a fan or not) and Nicko has just displayed another quality, dignity. Enjoy your retirement Nicko
I've already did this comment on the Iron Maiden's Future Past concert review three weeks after its release, but it's worth saying it again: "I saw them (the day before) yesterday in São Paulo, and it was the last show with Nicko McBrain on drums since he's retiring from touring after 42 YEARS! We were all sad, but still so grateful for what he contributed on all those years. The setlist was great, the theatrics were incredible, everybody was on fire, and even though he's not in the same state as before, Nicko played like a champ! Speaking of which, everybody was shouting "Nicko! Nicko! Nicko!", and "Olê olê olê olê, Nicko Nicko" over and over again, which was beautiful. However, the Paul Di'Anno tribute should've also happened, since he was also a great contributor on those two albums. Nevertheless, it's probably the best show I've ever been so far, [...] that night was absolutely spectacular, and like Alexander the Great himself, Iron Maiden became (or in this case, are) a legend amongst mortal men..."
This would not have been a sudden decision . I have a feeling Nico made the choice, if not at the begining of this current tour, but midway through it. God bless him, he's been honest with the band and honest with himself.
Sucks that he’s leaving. I understand tho ya gotta take care of yourself. I saw Iron Maiden in Fort Worth last month. It was badass, thanks nicko we’ll miss you.
It was time. In fact, I feel that the band should all hang it up. I give them credit -- especially Bruce. He's an extraordinary talent and can still deliver. But the magic is gone. I prefer to remember Maiden in all their greatness -- not just as "still kickin'. "
Was lucky enough to see Clive Burr once, but the countless times I've seen Maiden it was with Nikko. True end of an era and huge loss to Maiden. He deserves his retirement and all respect in the world for him
Glad I saw them on this last tour. Though there were a couple of screwups (and they were probably Nicko's fault), I can say I saw him one last time before he retired.
Quite bummed that I never got to see Iron Maiden perform live, and now Nicko has retired. Missed my chances in the '80s (and the opening show of the Ed Hunter tour in 1999). Otherwise they've never played close to me.
We love Nicko and in some respects it won't be the same without him but given his age, health issues and Maiden's relentless schedule it's not that surprising. Wishing him a long, healthy and happy retirement.
Yeah, it needed to be someone who Steve trusts. Saves on auditions too. They don't really have the time. Feels strange to not see Nicko behind the kit though. Like a death in the family, except he's just not touring with them anymore.
It was similar to the situation with Charlie Watts. He actually had to step down from touring before he died. So, he said that Steve Jordan was the man. Steve played with Keith.
My mate got ticket for next years tour in the UK. Disappointed Nicko is retiring but likes the idea of Simon taking over. Apparently this tour is only playing songs from the first seven albums 😁🤘I won’t being going, I’m in Florida then
