This show was absolutely bonkers.
And I loved every moment of it.
That's why it was so fun. Totally ridiculous but at the same time everyone involved took it super seriously.

I would've left Kitchen Stadium if that was the theme ingredient and my opponent was Iron Chef Chinese.
Chen Kenichi died in March 2023 I was sad to hear when I looked him up the other day.
He was a genius of cuisine.

Probably the only time in Iron Chef history when he didn't react to the ingredient reveal with consternation.
Usually, whenever Chen was in a battle, the theme ingredient was something NOT usually found in Chinese(Szechuan) cuisine, for example: foie gras, yogurt, pumpkin.
It was Kaga's sense of humor that broke Kenichi's demeanor

I absolutely loved Iron Chef(Japan) as a kid and I still watch it today. I couldnt get into the American version though just doesnt feel the same.
I totally agree. The quirkiness and mystique of this random Japanese cooking show that seemed to appear out of nowhere onto mainstream western TV is sort of what made it so captivating. It was also basically the first of it's kind... Iron Chef is the reason we have so many competitive cooking shows today. I think by the time the American version came around the novelty of competitive cooking shows was already starting wear off and it had become oversaturated. One of the best things about the original Iron Chef was that FUJI TV had full control over it and so it remained more or less true to the Japanese version - aside from the English overdubbing it was essentially identical.
reality TV ruin how studio make TV... sometime you need showmanship. the host and chef felt larger than life, is it realistic? no. is it epic? YES.

I love how at first the camera cuts to the challenger who’s clearly trying to maintain composure but starts laughing, and then cuts to Chen who’s already completely lost it.
Oh and that one person clapping in the background is the cherry on top.

Rice is very essential to the world's diet. In Asia, rice is almost in every dish. This is a very special theme to the Asian chefs. You can make a dessert with rice.
Thats why Diabetes keeps entering the chat.
Im relatively young and I eat 2-3 cups of uncooked rice per meal, when I get to a better financial state, Ill abandon rice.

Iron Chef predated Shokugeki by a lot of years. I wouldn't be surprised if it inspired the latter.

I think all of the music in the show is from the movie "Backdraft".
Some of it is from the Glory soundtrack.
That explains why the music changed dramatically in later reruns!
I still can't find the one where the Iron Chefs ascends (not the Glory one which was more often used in the Japanese version)

@@shoutyshouty thanks, I saw some posts from Iron Chef fansites where they were unable to find it and just referred to the theme as "yomigaeru". I used to think it was an operatic music that might have been inspired by the Backdraft theme.
Only the dubbed version uses both songs combined, not sure if the second song was ever used, but the only time the first one was used was during the Beijing battle.

Do you think any of those chefs have ever cooked rice before? I wonder how the episode turned out?
From what I remember, this was a highly *contentious* episode, with judges split 2-2, and IC Chen winning by a single point. (He was working on a samgyetang-style dish which wouldn't have been cooked in time if he didn't do something else with it - at the end, it looked like a hacked-up nightmare...) They're both Chinese chefs, so of course they can cook rice - but they probably have never cooked an entire meal based on rice. That was the core difficulty.

Nah, the word for uncooked rice is "kome" - and in other cases, he simply announced the name "kome" in his usual dramatic fashion. However, since he said "in each grain..." (hito-tsubu hito-tsubu ni), he decided to name each individual grain "kome", which relates to his mentioning that "(in China), it is said that God (or a god) exists in each grain." It's just amusing that he decided to try to name each individual grain - to the surprise of the crew and Iron Chef Chin.

The Iron Chef competition is to prepare original dishes never seen before. So Rice is a Beast-Mode level ingredient. What are you going to do with rice to create a new dish never before seen?
