Just my opinion: I feel most older teams, especially pre-80s, would struggle to win a series against the modern teams. It's not about the skillset, it's about the newer playbooks, player conditioning and the evolution of the game itself.
Also, the fitness of modern players is on a completely different level. To clarify, I am not referring to speed, power or strength. It's the difference in endurance, flexibility, dexterity, etc. While some earlier generations have even played 6-day tests, they didn't have such hectic calendars. Now, players compete in a grueling schedule of diverse cricketing formats that demand a complete lifestyle change and adjustment to the modern world.

2004 Australia Tour of India, Aus won because of the following:
    1. Sachin Tendulkar didn't play the first 2 tests and came back into the 3rd post a long break from his infamous Tennis Elbow injury(Yeah, Ricky Ponting didn't play too, but I would rate Sachin's impact in India much much higher than that of Ponting's).
    2. 2nd Test Match at Chennai 5th day got washed out. India would have most certainly chased it down(200 odd on the last day).
    3. Terrible umpiring which went against India. First over of the tour, Justin Langer was not given LBW. It was plumb out. Many such instances.
    4. Parthiv Patel's terrible wicket keeping skills. He dropped way too many catches which even pissed off Rahul Dravid in the slips.
    5. Ganguly and Harbhajan choosing not to play the 3rd test at Nagpur since the wicket had a green top 🙄
Australia were undoubtedly brilliant, but the above points went terribly against India.

Even if Kohli Rohit starts to play against Indian side with World Xi they won't beat this side.
Cause they have to face 2 giants who can bat decent against spin and among top 5 SR and Avg for spinners.
Ind have lost 3 tests just Three tests when jadeja and Aswin played together in India. To beat ind in india in test series you have to win 2 to 3 matches within a God damn series, that's their entire career number in India.
Good luck beating 2 proper spin all rounders on spin friendly wickets👍

In my opinion spinners can get the job done in India, as the current lot of Indian batsmen are no experts in facing spin. But the issue is that SENA countries don't have any experienced spinners. A XI with 2 such spinners can trouble India big time, that's what Swann & Panesar did in 2012

While I have around 60-70 friends and known ones who watch cricket, only about 2 of them have a deep understanding of how the game is played. Most watch cricket simply because it’s popular, with many only tuning in for T20 matches due to its fast pace. There are only few people in our country who understands how cricket is being played rest of them are just fighting about how their favourite player is the best player of all time.

In 2012 India lost mostly because of an ageing team. The team was in transition with Tendulkar, Gambhir, Sehwag, Yuvraj etc all past their prime and new talent like Virat and Pujara didn't have experience. Combined with England's spin duo of Swann and Panesar cost India that series. The only team I can think that has a chance against this team is 2012 England with Cook, piterson, Swann and panesar.
The above statement is because of the following two conditions which any team needs to win a test series in India
    1. You need good spinners
    2. Importantly you need good players of spin bowling, I can't remember someone dominating Indian spinners in India like Kevin Petersen and they also had Alastair Cook.

I have been thinking about this for a while now that no team can beat India at home in tests at home and maybe even away. India is so balanced that they can recover themselves from the most difficult situations in test cricket as in tests you don't need to win just once, like in T20is or ODIs, you need to win session after session or win so dominately in one session that the game is over and you just can't do that to the indian team. The same begali team that was playing wow cricket against Pakistan beating them by nearly an innings, were completely helpless against India. I think Pakistan currently should be happy rather than disappointed that India dont play billatareals against them because this Indian team would humiliate them at home, away, or neutral venues. In conclusion, the Indian team currently is the best test team.

It is a shame that WTC final is just 1 test match. This is unfair. WTC final should always be best of 3 test match. England is a rainy country. Imagine on the WTC final there is rain and couple of sessions being washed out. Also overcast conditions can favour the side bowling. India lost first WTC final to NZ because there was rain during that final and NZ bowlers used the best the precipitation because they were bowling then. Rain had played a highly significant role for India loss at the first WTC final. This is not a lame excuse. This is 100 percent truth and fact. But I totally agree the second WTC final between aussies and India, Australia outplayed India for sure. There is no rain this time for the whole 5 days. So it fair. I believe WTC final should always be best of 3 test match instead of just 1 test match deciding the fate of a team which for which it took 2 years to reach the WTC final. English batters can't play spin expect for Root, Rachin Ravindra hasn't played yet so not included, Devon Conway out of form, Babar Azam doesn't seem confident against this Indian Attack. The current Indian team is the best Indian team and will defeat past generations Indian team just because they have the best bowling line up India has ever produced. Even though pre 2010 has better batting, the bowling quality of Ashwin, Jadeja, Axar/Kuldeep, Bumrah and Shami will trump the opposition.

So, i don't think it will be an easy win for pre 2010 team and it will be a close fight(Taking assumption that pitch is not a complete rank turner because if it is then it is a easy win for pre 2010s team).
i have taken that particular assumption beacuse in recent times(for the last 2 series) Indian pitches are not that much of a rank turner.

The most legit team has to be Aus 2004. They have all the ingredients to win against this prime Indian side.
In order to win in India, you need a batsman who frustrate bowlers by not giving wicket for longer spells and are great players of spin e.g. D Martin, Younis Khan, Cook, Khwaja.
You need individual match winners like Gillespie, McGrath, Warne. I still remember how Gillespie and McGrath troubled Dravid in that series and by which we couldn’t draw the matches.
Eng 2012 was a solid team but legendary Indian side was already old and jaded.
Also feel this Indian team can beat 1999 Pak team fairly easily in India.

The only team from the current generation who have a SLIGHT chance at beating India at home is Australia. they came close in 2017 and last year series was also quite fun. England on the other hand look down upon spin bowling, batting against spin and turning wickets as something inferior now more than ever. they shake off every series in India as 'hmph, turning wickets.". they are never repeating their performances from 2012 until India have monumental collapse in their resources, which looks very unlikely for another decade. South Africa kind of have the batters, but they simply don't have the bowling resources, same for NZ.

Pant is our best wk batter and equal to VVS easily. Jaddu and Ash are any day better than any other 7 or down batter in the past teams.
The only places where the previous batters win is Dravid is light years better than Gill right now.
Along with the fact that this bowling line up is miles ahead of previous gen. Bumrah+Ash+Jaddu+Shami+Siraj/Axar is anyday better than Kumble+Bhajji+Zaheer+(srinath or Irfan).

Look at stats of Warne and Murali 2 undoubtedly greatest spinners of all time were just avrage routine bowlers for these stalwarts, Kohli and Rohit has higher prime but yeah Sachin and Dravid could play session by session and are brilliant spin batters specially off spin of Ashwin.
May be this 'Bumrah vs Dravid' and Sachin now that would have been competition to pay the money for. Also Kumble and Bhajji vs Kohli and company didn't underestimate those 2 giants.
It all comes down to current pacers vs Big 4 back then and what kind of day Pant has against either spinner he is sole difference between the 2 teams!
In all honesty Kohli is miles behind Sachin even he is far from Dravid in Test we shouldn't get started about Rohit in test cricket!

Stokes??? he is probably one of the most clueless batsman ever to have played in india he struggles against spin, fast bowling even on good surfaces and we saw that in their recent tour to india where he averaged 19.

I think the Pak team of 1999 would have a decent chance. Current Indian batting is not as strong, they may find it really difficult to face Saqlain. That Pak bowling was tailor made for these conditions. If Inzi had a blockbuster series they would win.

I think the 83-84 team can still do it. I watched that series entirely and Holding and Marshal were a handful. That was there coming of age series. WI then went on to dominate Cricket. I do not see how the duo will be faced by the current batting lineup. Well for the WI they have to face a much much better Indian bowling attack. Better both in the spin and the pace department. It would be a contest and I think they would stand a chance to beat the modern day India team.

NZ finally have a spin attack that is suited for Indian conditions. Santner is not quick through the air but he kinda knows how to bowl in India. Patel took a 10-fer and Phillips is quick through the air. Ravindra is their 4th spin option.
If (a very big if) someone like Williamson touches god and has an away series like Smith in Ashes 2019, NZ can give India a run for their money
I don’t see that happening, but it’s the closest that a team can potentially get to in the next couple of years before Ashwin or Rohit retire
