Muzan tells us that he doesn’t even WANT to create the demons but he does so out of necessity, however this doesn’t mean that he doens’t have a favorite. In the Demon Slayer Databooks we learn that Muzan actually did have a demon that he was a huge fan of, and that would be Rui, the Spider Demon that we saw Tanjiro facing off against in Demon Slayer Season 1. Muzan had a strong eye for talent and saw a lot of potential in Rui, who rose to the ranks of the Lower Moon Demons, and likely had enough skill in just the 20 years of his existence to surpass Enmu as Lower Moon 1. The reason Rui didn’t seem THAT Powerful when Tanjiro and his group come across him is because Rui still hasn’t completely lost his memories and this causes him to split his power up into the other members of his spider family, but Muzan says that IF Rui kept all of his power to himself, that he would’ve been a good fight for all of the pillars, showing you just how lucky Tanjiro was that Rui had his family with him.

Rui is what make muzan remember the worse feeling of being sick. When rui defeat by demon slay, muzan only goal is either by spider Lily flowers to heal himself or consumer demon that defeat the sun so he can freely walk on the sun which muzan originally plan.

This actually could happen if rui didn't die and demon slayer corps didn't confront Muzan directly. We can say what we want, but once someone become an uppermoon (or Muzan's favorite lowermoon), he becomes quite lenient (as much as a demon king can be to maintain a good hierarchy and order, anyway).
So this is why Muzan disbanded lower moon demons, because if Rui is dead, none of them will never stood a chance, unless they do as Muzan says to the point they lifebeing is not matter, only Muzan objective's is
Shame we didn't get to see the rest of the Lower Moons show their abilities
That explains why is the first season (ep 26) he was so angry with the lower demons and killed them off for not being of use when rui died .

Rui & Muzan do have a set of similarities to each other, and that together, there may have been a bond.

The potential of Rui if he had all his powers and wasn't obsessed with family... He could snipe people with but a single string that you'd barely notice till it's too late. Strings he can use to disarm even Hashiras if he aimed for their weapons instead. Traps galore and even make a lair that is completely under his control like a spider. Puppetry, durability... I doubt Upper 6 would have an easy time against a powerful Rui. He'd dice anyone if he developed his powers.
