  • In my opinion, Armbian is the best Desk Linux Distro fro Arm Based Single board computers and n this video I show to how to install it on your board.
Armbian supports a lot of different SBC"s like the Odroid xu4 and c2 Nano pi t4, nano pi pc4, orange pi, banana pi, rock pro 64 Asus tinker board and many many more!

Enjoyed this vid, but speaking of the Odroid XU4, the gang over at Odroid Retro Arena have released version 3.0.3 of their image for the XU4, supporting a LOT of new stuff. I, for one, would love an ETA Primer (see what I did there?) on the differences and new capabilities of this build. Either way, thanks for making great vids.

WOW man talk about timing, for the last week I've been reading about how to install Linux on an Orange Pi Lite that I'll get soon and then you make this, exactly what I needed.
I hope the Orange Pi 3 gets supported soon by Armbian because it's a neat SBC, I want to get one for my mom who's pretty bad with computers.

I’ve been waiting for the orange pi 3 image to pop up on the website. As soon as I can get me hands on it. I will be making an overview video.

@@ETAPRIME I forgot to say that it would be great if, in addition to trying Armbian, you installed RetroPie as an app on top of it to see how it works.
Or maybe modifying RetrOrangePi to have access to the full desktop environment.

I'm sure that Synaptic - a graphical front-end for installing software - will be available on Armbian, as it is in Raspbian on the Raspberry Pi. For those daunted by the command line, it makes searching for and installing software very easy.

Great vid thanks! Does Armbian mean the (non raspberry pi) arm single boards now work ok? Most seemed really let down by the default Linux software, (but were better served with Android,) to the extent that the RPi could beat much faster and better boards with its better configured Raspbian distro and drivers. Really want to see what the Odroid N2 will do on this distro.

Armbian is a favorite of mine as well - as far as board support goes, the listing of boards doesn't guarantee it is Armbian supported. There are contributed images for download, but "unsupported."
However, the reason the Raspberry Pi is not listed is fairly in line with what you said - it gets a lot of support already. BUT, the lack of listing is based on a somewhat negative political decision, imo.
Namely, because I dicked around with my RPi3B to such a degree I was able to boot Armbian. It involved work beyond reason and I discovered that even with an open source bootloader and a stitch job, Armbian is just horrible on the Raspberry Pi 3B.
But the listing is not there because the primary contributors to Armbian admittedly greatly dislike the Raspberry Pi. The general community hates the RPi. One easy way to test that, post a positive comment on the forums regarding the RPi - then wait for the virtual beating of a lifetime.
I am by no means an expert in Linux, but I got a really terrible image up and running - the bootloader is the big killer. Anyway, if it were listed, then people would probably build much better images than I did, and even while it is tagged unsupported. The Tritium H5 board is like this - unsupported, but competent builds have been contributed.
My impression is it's not just about the RPi already has support; but taken to a much greater degree. Armbian does not want people with an RPi or from the RPi community on the site. The RPi is considered a joke; there is also a common derogatory label placed on those who support the Pi.
Your explanation for it not being there is fair - Armbian would become too focused on the RPi, detracting from otherwise very wide support. And the board is underpowered - the last update reclocked the same chip, slapped a fancy looking wireless interface on the top, and made (?) gigabit Ethernet or PoE sorta possible - I can't remember 100%; I didn't get the 3B+; but it was underwhelming when released. And going at it alone.. that's a nightmare in itself.
But, for an RPi user that decides to get a more expensive board, and they decide Armbian, I would dare say RPi bashing would be a little unwelcoming; but if they mention the RPi, they're headed into an ambush!
Armbian is great - I love it. And your presentation is excellent. I'm just saying, for the uninitiated ...they might mention the RPi, then turn up hours later cowering and sobbing in the corner of their bedroom from the angry mob that's gathered... Or at least that's what happened to me as I recall anyway... lol

Why should you use anything else than Raspbian? Its well optimized and the best OS for the Pi.
Doesnt make any sense to put work on another OS like Armbian on a Pi, thats just a waste of time.
I love people on the internet... getting awesome stuff for free but always finding a stupid reason to complain about it 🤯
Edit: If you want to waste your time then feel free to build and compile your own Linux kernel and set up a desktop yourself 🤷🏻‍♂️ Oh, and dont forget to share it for free for other people then!

Why do you think that 20 clicks are easyer for the user than just typing as a single line "apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade && apt-get install libreoffice"? And why would you strongly suggest to reboot a linux os as if it was windows? Wait a minute you then just typed "sudo apt-get install gimp" .... still sure it wasn't better to type just one line?
