Takemitsu had such an ear for orchestration, it's scary knowing that he didn't have a formal education in music compared to his contemporaries but was nevertheless able to write at such an incredible level. I will also add that this is an incredible performance of this piece, I think it might be my favorite now. There's so many things that are highlighted in this performance that I haven't heard in others. 11:51 for example, I love how that chord in the french horns, trombones and trumpets was brought out of the texture and then fades out a bit so that the trumpets dominate at 11:53. I love that subtle detail. Also at 12:25 to the end I love that we can clearly hear all the different instruments entering in and providing their distinct timbres to that overall sustained chord in the flutes, and clarinet, that was executed masterfully. I really hope to hear this piece live someday.
Extraordinary piece with some excruciatingly beautiful moments. Takemitsu had a perfect sense of pacing and time.
