He may have stumbled just a bit on some promos. But back then it was on the fly. Like freestyling. And David was considered one of the better mic guys. Also you need to remember that he was only a heel in Florida which he'd only jump to for minimum periods of time. Which otherwise he was the golden boy of the family. He was being groomed to take over and get the biggest title from Flair as a face. So for those who want to talk about mic skills back in this era. Well David was the total package. Wrestling, mic skills, ring psychology. He was the most gifted Von Erich out of the whole family when it came to the pro wrestling game. Yes Flair, Dusty, and a few others may have had a bit better mic skills. However David didn't script his like Dusty definitely did. And Flare was just a natural. But he'd practice before quite a bit. David stumbled just a bit. But he was much younger than them guys as well. So by the time he would have been their age I'm sure David would have been gold on the mic. He's the one who would speak for the brothers,he was the voice of the Von Erichs and he was great on the mic. Especially for that era. You give it a try, ready promo in 3,2,1. Go.

Honestly, it wasn't even that bad. Another couple of years and he'd have had it down. Don't forget, this is a 22-23 year old kid here. I remember a 22 year old Bryan Danielson for example, and he couldn't talk for shit, but eventually, he became one of the best talkers in the business simply by just being himself. Imagine where David would have been if he'd just gotten to 30. I have no doubts that the little stumbles would've been gone the more comfortable he got, and I know that the WWF would've come calling for him to do a big money program with Hogan as a heel.

I wasn't really ever that high on Dave until I watched this vid. Really and truly, David was a natural heel. I understand he had to stay a fan favorite in Texas, but he should have been a heel all along. Even him turning on Kerry and Kev and having some sort of inner family feud. I can't wait for the "Iron Claw" to reach theaters. I thing A24 studios got this one right. You can tell in the trailer that there are gonna be some gutwrenching moments. I know that the concept really follows Kevin's perspective, Zac Efron's character, but I feel like they'll really touch on David's death in Japan, Kerry beating Flair for NWA title, Kerry's motorcycle accident and subsequent amputation, Mike's problems and suicide. Possibly Chris's suicide (although I don't think they have anyone cast as Chris. I could be wrong. And ultimately Kerry's last days before committing suicide on Fritz's farm. I feel like that scene towards the end of the trailer where it shows Kerry canoeing 🛶 looking around at nature is the scene where he's finding him a spot to end it all..😢 Can't wait to see it. I think they're absolutely gonna do justice to the story.

Another couple of years and David would've been a truly great promo. You could see he was getting there. He had the makings of a fantastic heel. I have no doubt that Vince would've loved to bring him in as a heel challenger to Hogan.

This shows how David was definitely ready for the NWA World Title. He could have traveled the territories the way Race and Flair did, and switch between babyface and heel depending on who the challenger was going to be.

What exactly did this lanky, awkward guy do well? Wasn't the promos. Wasn't the look. Wasn't the work, its awful. Looked like a basketball player trying to wrestle. He was never going to get an extended run as champ. Only a draw in Dallas. They weren't even big in Houston or San Antonio.

By the time his later promos come in by '82, he was already relaxed.
He had loads of time to be polished. Imagine him by 1989. Flair was still putting on classics then so just imagine. Disagree with thee above comment.

I can’t see Kerry and Kevin being heels but David seems pretty good at being one. Had he lived, maybe they could’ve had some storylines in which he somehow betrayed the family.
Imagine him being in Jim Crockett Promotions and joining the Four Horseman after Ole Anderson left the group.

I've seen a little of the David heel stuff, but it was weird seeing Kerry trash talking. he was not a great talker but he was good in the ring. Was never huge Von Erich fan growing up. Loved the Freebirds. But they were fun to watch in the ring. But that fast life style that kerry ran caught up to him I know he killed himself but the motorcycle accident all the other things, eventually brought him to that point.

These guys were studs. David dying changed wrestling history for sure. Its always talked about that David would have had an NWA title run but im not convinced it would have happened. He was no baby face anywhere other that Texas and Flair outshines him as a heel. I think what is more realistic is David would have left for the wwf as everyone else did.
