Sibelius has also made superb pieces to cello and other soloinstruments. He is not solely a symphony composer

Just looking at the first page of the piano score.........you need an "Enigma" decoding machine! Brilliant pianist as well as cellist.

They're called arpeggios... not so hard if one has any level of mastery of the instrument. That said, it is well played

It's a little puzzling as to why Sibelius did not compose a cello concerto considering this and, say, the opening of Pohjola's Daughter and the 4th symphony, and what seems to an instrument suited to his sometimes laconic moods.

Sorry but it sounds like the cello is being tortured...complexity and dissonance are often mistaken for genius...Just listen to Finzi’s cello concerto and you will realize just how beautiful the cello can be

What an od comment! It IS torture! Torture of the soul!. You are very alone on that standpoint. Perhaps you should listen with the heart

You cant understand the music of Sibelius if you've never been to Finland.
