The shadow of your smile 11:47
Number 7 27:53
Band introduction 37:10
Yusef Lateef (sax, flutes), Kenny Drew (piano) , Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen (bass), Albert Heath (drums).
yusef is one badasss player he helps the blind to seeeeee.
The shadow of your smile is perhaps one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've heard to date. Just amazing.
Yusef had a mental block announcing the name of the composer of The shadow of your smile, after announcing the song was written after the death of the composer's wife. It looks like the bass player told Yusef it was written by Henry Mancini. The music was actually written by Johnny Mandel for the film Sandpiper.
Someone in the crowd even shouts out "Johnny Mandel!". Forgive the group, Tootie was dripping buckets and Mr. Lateef was out of breath after that blistering run!
The HEATH BROTHERS ARE ALL GONE. YUSEF, AHMED, MCCOY, MAEBURN, GROVER, DIZZ, JONES BROTHERS, COLTANES ALL IN THAT BIG BAND IN THE SKY! LOVE AND MISS ALL OF THEM REST IN POWER!
Tootie Heath is still here.
Pas un Français dans le quartet mais ils commencent par " Frère Jacques ". Ca fait plaisir. 🙂
This channel is perfect for young people learning jazz. (Of course, it is also ideal for enthusiasts who are familiar with jazz.)
The third number is called "Yusef's Mood" and the final theme under band introduction was "Delilah" written by Victor Young. Thanks for sharing this wonderful concert!
Hello vova47,
I had a question about your opinions on nhops playing as I have noticed your comments on a number of videos where he is featured. Altough on a particular video you seemed to be very against the idea that he is the greatest bassist of all time. While I too agree that he isn’t the very GREATEST of all time I certainly think that he incredible. What do you make of him as someone obviously acquainted with his playing.
I’ve never met you but I love you Yusuf; thanks for the beautiful performances and recordings
The expression of calm on Kenny Drew's face at 6:40 with that blistering solo. Great playing all around. Great energy.
The flute solo on the shadow of your smile is incredible, thanks for sharing!
Amazing Yusef
Very good visual and audio quality.
And it’s great to see a young Pedersen digging in and having a good time.
Thanks! I’m studying flute and he is one of my favorite players. So happy to be able to see if perform live!
Check out his flute book with the star chart Coltrane gave him.
@@stephencarroll230 Is it called “Flute Book of the Blues 1& 2” or is there another one?
@@dimensionstomorrow Lateef- Repository of Scales
@@stephencarroll230 Thank you!
I’m sorry that’s all I know. The book was a flutist friend’s I saw in the 80s. He studied classical flute with a student of Rampal’s and jazz with Phil Woods teacher, and Shepp.
This is really precious
Some great visual moments in this ..
Thanks for sharing these wonderful moments. I saw him at Ronnies in London around 1967. I can remember the room fell to silence, he was a great musician and very inventive at the time. Brilliant!!!!!
Could it have been 66'?? There's a great recording of the Ronnie's show

Saw him around 1996, when Amherst declared Yusuf Lateef day and he performed with Von Freeman. Met him in the bathroom before that at Umass in 1986. He was Doctor Lateef- a professor of education there.
What a moment! Great camera work. Thx for sharing it.
Waw!Gone are those days
He called Henry Mancini a young man and Mancini was 44 at the time of this recording lol I love Henry Mancini and I really love Yusuf lateef, massive musicians
The song has nothing whatever to do with Mancini, young or old. Johnny Mandel wrote it.
Right, Johnny Mandel wrote the song. Henry Mancini was just one of the many that recorded it.
Perfect in every way.
This RUclips channel is a treasure! Thanks!🙏🏻
These video's are pure GOLD, thank you for posting!
Niels Pedersen always present
I first heard the Shadow of Your Smile around 1968 at Sahara Tahoe casino. I think the Sandpiper had just come out around then. Maybe Kenny didn't know it.
espectacular!!!!...gracias, es genial!
Weird version of the Shadow of Your Smile. Makes me think Kenny didn't know the chords. Some beautifull changes in the Mandel original.
A lovely arrangement, however “The Shadow of your Smile” was rightly composed by Johnny Mandel.
26:07 esa expresión al oír la música de Drew!
Thanks!
Perfeito.
could you do sonny rollins live in denmark next?
😍
Yusef originally from Chattanooga, Tennessee.......just like Samuel L Jackson.
Anyone know what venue this was?
I love Yusef to life, but he struggles with the melody of this composition. Nothing to do with his tone or sound. He misses the notes of the melody for some reason or another. The timing isn't his usual perfection that lends tho his incomparable interpretation of a tune. Nice mysterious undertone but not Yusef's most productive effort. Great support and lovely arrangement. Drew and Nels are the most fantastic back up
I've been listening to Dr. Lateef for over 60 years, he's the most complete musician in the same order of Coltrane, Miles and that caliber of musician. Yusef,Great technician and master musician.
I apologize to Albert "Tootie" Heath on drums for overlooking his fantastic contribution.
Can you do (1/googolplex )of what he did?
Know what I mean?
🫀
"The Shadow of Your Smile" has nothing to do with Henry Mancini or his wife (dead or alive). The song is a Love Theme from a film "Sandpiper" and is written by the great Johnny Mandel. The ignorance of some (that well known jazz musicians) is incredible!!
Can you imagine any classical musician not knowing a composer whose piece they're about to perform in concert?☹Sad!!
