They just do what every young Australian living in or near the bush is taught: Wear thick leather boots, walk noisily, particularly in or near long grass or dense ground-level vegetation. Be observant at all times so you don’t accidentally step on a snake or walk into a spider’s web. Most of the orb-weaving web-dwelling spiders are relatively harmless to humans anyway and simply will try to escape from the monster that has just smashed through their web. With snakes in particular, unless they are cornered they will avoid those noisy humans by moving away quickly to a safer spot, so usually you never see them. You might see them or hear them moving away so, if you do, just stop and stand still for a while and let them go. Don’t corner them! It’s always safer for humans to follow existing paths and tracks through the bush, rather than just bashing through. Also, never ever pick up anything without first turning it over and inspecting it (and the ground underneath it) for snakes and spiders, just like Anastasia did with that log. If any creepy crawlies are found, move away from them carefully and leave them alone. Give them time to move away and allow them to hide again away from that noisy, frightening, interfering human.
