"That shot put the lid on the basket for all of our careers moving forward."
This was what Charles Smith said about Ewing's layup in the dying minutes. Now, this is the same Charles Smith that was blocked 4 times in the same play by the Bulls in game 5 of the 1993 Eastern Conference Finals, but he wasn't exactly wrong when he said it.
New York basketball has never really recovered from this game. Sure they reached the Finals in '99, but honestly that felt like a blip. It's like the heart and soul of the city died with this Ewing miss.

How ? They won 57 games in 97 .. won 50 games in 2000 .. went to the conference finals.. it fell apart when they traded ewing

@@kapo2012fb Yeah, but in '97 Jordan was back and the Bulls has won 72 games and the chip the year prior. It felt like the NBA was back to being the 'Jordan invitational'.
You're right about 2000 though. But this is also the romantic in me; the 1995 Knicks was Ewing's team with Riley at the head. By 2000, Riley was gone and Ewing was older, struggling a lot more with injury and you even had people talking about Ewing theory.
So while they had a chance in 1999 in the Finals, and reached the 2000 ECF, those teams for some reason didn't feel as 'New York' as those Riley and Ewing teams. That was really the era that personified Knicks basketball since their titles in the 70s.
Again, this is just a subjective opinion. And there's a bit of romanticism involved. And the truth is that they probably wouldn't have been able to go through Orlando and Houston in 1995 even if they beat Indiana in this game. But of all the Knicks playoff heartbreak, something about this one just hurts so much more.

@@kapo2012fbit fell apart because you know who was gone in 94 and was back to 💯 in 95 by that next year it was a wrap for the league because you know who returned back to 💯 continuing his DOMINANCE of the knicks eliminating any chance of that knicks team from winning. By 1999 2000 San Antonio Duncan and Shaq and Kobe were too strong Ewing was on the decline by the time they traded him they were never going to win after 1996 period facts

@@brianduru3753 You romanticized Riley's Knicks then but to me, Jeff Van Gundy's workmanlike underdog persona was every bit as New York as Riley. I found Van Gundy more likeable than Riley because he had no ego and never stopped holding his players accountable no matter who they were. He always had bags under his eyes, always looked frustrated, was short in stature, he was the antithesis of a big name charm coaching personality. But he never quit and wouldn't let his team quit. He fought to keep his job with the spectre of Phil Jackson looming. Van Gundy absolutely was New York, and that was my dude. Riley turned traitor and walked out and built THE most hated rival of my childhood. I grew to absolutely despise him. He came back to the Garden and welcomed the boos. He was dead to me while Van Gundy, who looked more like a wrestling jobber, especially when he was hanging on Alonzo Mourning's leg, improbably became my all time favorite Knicks head coach.
With that said, I will give Riley his due as a great Knicks head coach, and during those Riley years, they had tremendous opportunities to win it all. But I never forgave him for turning his back on us, and as sad as I was when he did that, I realized his balding understudy was more my kinda guy over time.

This was the beginning of the end of the Ewing led Knicks as we knew them. That season, both Orlando and Indiana took the next step. New York was a year older and 2 steps slower. The Bulls were hovering around .500 all season before MJ returned and went 13-4 to close out the season. The Knicks had a tough matchup starting out with the Mark Price led Cavs. The Knicks went 3-1 against the Pacers in the regular season, but i knew this matchup in the 2nd rd was gonna be different. Indiana matched the Knicks intensity on both ends of the court and this series established Reggie as a top 3 shooting guard in the league. Losing this series hurt me as a Knicks fan, but looking back on it now, i knew the Knicks had been riding on fumes for 4 months prior to seasons end. The Knicks would've been no match for the Magic or the Bulls (who Orlando knocked off 2 nights prior). The 95 loss to Indiana woke me up to the reality that NY would never win a title with Ewing as the best player. The next season, Pat Riley would be in Miami. The Orlando Magic would still have Shaq and Penny leading for one more season and MJ would lead Chicago to another 3 peat. This was the end of Ewing as a dominant championship contending player.

I was 14 years old watching this game......that win was so satisfying as a Pacers fan. Dale Davis snatching that rebound after Ewing missed that layup. None of this mattered because the Pacers went on to lose to the Magic in the eastern conference finals. Pacers got their payback on the Knicks from 1994 ECF, and Magic got their payback on the Pacers from 1994 first round.
