Every young pianist who wants to play Rachmaninoff should listen to this recital and look at the scores the same time. It is such a valuable master class about how to read Rachmaninoff's texts and how to set priorities in voicing while looking at thousands of notes. And there are so much touch and sound variations to discover. And there are so much ways of possible phrasing demonstrated. And everything has a purpose, works as a puzzle element of a story telling. This is the champions league of piano art.

ja, ganz anders, und zwar hat er eine viel grössere Palette an Artikulation, Anschlagsarten, Klangfarben und Texturen als viele andere Pianisten. Alles steht ihm jederzeit zur Verfügung, um das auszudrücken, was er gerade möchte. Was ich so phantastisch finde: was auch immer er macht, es ist immer so unglaublich deutlich.

oh yes, I know, it was the second part of my soloist diploma recital (after works by Mozart, Scriabin and Schnittke), it is so much work only to learn the score and then not to forget one part while learning the next one and then to try to make some interesting music out of the millions of notes written and then to present it as a whole piece of art in the recital (if possible whithout mistakes, which is too difficult, but i got it) and then while performing to create something out of the momentum and make an experience for the audience out of it. It was so exhausting!!! And it was still exhausting when playing this at recitals afterwards, 100% fitness and concentration was a must. Now, 16 years later, I hear this recording and thing that I should go for a second round whith this piece. No matter what it costs.
Dopo 35 anni che ascolto pianoforte con la figlia diplomata, trovo in Pletnev un modo unico nel fraseggio e timbrica. Non passa mai la voglia di ascoltarlo. Grazieeee .
Согласна, качество аудиозаписи оставляет желать лучшего, но я акцентирую своё внимание на исполняемых произведениях, и на то, что вкладывает Маэстро в своё ИСПОЛНЕНИЕ. А видеозапись позволяет увидеть и эмоции исполнителя , и пианистическое мастерство. А это - бесценно!

Rachmaninoff's sonata is brutal!
