BMPCC regular user here... For $99 Juicebox makes a great all day battery. I've never went below 50% on all day shoots. Use fast lenses only. Under 2... Prores is great for most uses. DNG Raw is gorgeous but overkill for most uses. Kingston SD cards are cheap and work with DNG Raw without any framedropping. A cheap gimbal like the Zhyun Crane 2 takes care of any handheld stability issues and honestly, I just use the old 3-points of contact method or use a Tripod. Not an issue. Samyang and Meike make some incredibly affordable lenses that look spectacular. Just remember the crop factor and keep them fast. Speedboosters are great (and pricey) but eBay has them in droves for pretty cheap. Feelworld monitors are affordable and take care of any flipscreen and for a mic... there's unlimited choices. For audio, I mainly use a Sure Lenshopper shotgun with a built in recorder on top of the BMPCC or the Tascam Lav or Zoom Lavs with the recorders. Tiny, simple, durable and dependable. Hope this helps anyone interested in using this little beast of a camera. It's unlike any other camera out there and for under a grand you have something that really differentiates your footage and gives you the ability to help create a bit of magic. But in the end, the magic is always in the hands of the creator and not the gear...

It had a Hitchcock depth of field feel, the hip replacement sound effects were Quentin all day, and the Robert Zemeckis story telling was present. Had you shot this film with the Canon C70 Roger Deakins would have been envious. That said, I am still standing throwing roses at my computer screen. Bravo sir. Bravo.

Be VERY CAREFUL when touching the HDMI cable/connector when it is plugged in. Don't bump it nor push against it to pan the camera. It's best to use one of those flexible, ribbon cable, adapters for gimbals (micro-HDMI to full HDMI) that have a "right-angle" micro-HDMI connector. Additionally, the Metabones speedbooster made specifically for the OG BMPCC is amazing, and it transforms the camera into a Super35/APS-C crop and adds an extra stop of exposure! Watch out for IR pollution, especially in black clothing and when using NDs. There are inexpensive IR cut filters that prevent the problem. As one commenter mentioned, you might need to deal with moire/aliasing. It's not too difficult to avoid, if you are alert.
You need to buy a Canon EOSM running Magic Lantern Raw. Extended workflow, needs sandisk extreme pro cards and eats batteries for lunch. But the footage is amazing once you get the workflow correct.
BMPCC O.G is cumbersome for sure. And cetrainly not ideal fo vloging :) But still to this day you can use it on the same set with modern cinema cameras like Arri and get away with intercuting the fotage between cameras. It is really amazing the kind of image this litlle 13year old tiny thing can produce. This sensor gets as close to film as a sensor can get. This is probably the only camera i will never sell, and when it stops working i wil buy another used one :)

I had one... The Cine look was really nice, messing with tiny C-Mount lens meant for security cams and such was cool. Dealing with RAW files was a joy for the for the amount of control in post but also a nightmare to deal with generally... That + No sensor stab, no flippy screen, needing so many external accessories that the camera stops being "pocket" made me sell it.
A needy camera, but it will love you back as you show it love. I don't even bother with Raw on mine, since the moiré in small details is ass-nasty. ProRes debayers it nicely. If you're working with color management in Resolve, set your input color space for ProRes clips to Blackmagic film gen 1 and your life will be made easier.
I'm not going to lie, when you went black and white and delivered that hollywood-level performance, I thought I was watching a film. There's something magical there, even with that miniature lens. The cinema is yours.
I started using my OG BMPCC in 2018 and hearing you go through all the learning curves with it reminded me of how much I had to go through with it lol. It is a camera made for filmmakers. Using it for anything else is just not feasible.
Coming from someone who loves to buy old tech and experiment with it. I often have to buy older SD cards. I often find deals on refurbished cards. I own the OG Blackmagic pocket. I know that one of the recommended cards is the Sandisk at 95mbs. I have no problem with those when I shot in pro res, but never saw the value is shooting raw and the hassle and storage. Also there is a RUclipsr that shows a hack where he was able to hook an external monitor and power the camera off the monitor. Unfortunately I can’t remember his name, but I tried it and it worked. Good luck with the camera!
To anyone considering this camera, get the Kingston Canvas Select Plus cards. Works perfect with raw and they are cheap. There is some info on youtube if you want to confirm, but ive used them a lot. Even 60 fps 3:1 raw on the micro cinema camera works perfect.
Just some hopium for the BMPCC - My channel is pretty much dedicated to the Pocket OG and Micro. I've been able to get the most authentic fly on the wall home video style footage that I can't get with any other camera I've used. This is simply because of yes, the size but also the organic soft image it produces combined with C-Mount lenses that I've modified from the 70s and mounted using a $6 adapter. You can get S16 glass made by respected modern brands like Cooke, Angenieux and other relatively cheap dark horse lenses that completely covers this sensor and really brings you into the Cinéma Vérité world with their swirly bokeh and flat colour rendition. I leave a $20 Cosmicar lens on it most of the time that's about the size of your thumb and is tack sharp. It's so much fun to pass the Pocket around to family members during a get together and see what moments they capture...and want to capture because of the cameras simplicity to operate and non-intimidating size. I'm over the sharpness/ resolution war and I much prefer uniqueness and character in an image. The Pocket and Micro are the best base digital cameras to build off of and continue that lost 'dad footage' collecting dust in peoples attics. For me, it bridges the gap between old film aesthetics with a modern editing pipeline perfectly. It's also a great conversation starter piece of gear :) I should add that getting a RAWLITE OLPF gets rid of moire, IR pollution and a significant amount of chroma noise as a result. You can then run your edit through Topaz to upscale it to 4k which sharpens the footage. It looks better than sharpening already digitally sharpened footage (like the Pocket 4k). Keep shooting - you'll warm up to it eventually! Also I'm in Toronto, Leaside. Sup.

Voightlander 10.5mm and Kowa 8.5mm Best choices out there. Voightlander is F0.95 so you'll get the bokeh, but you should also get the Green Kowa, (f2.8) to complete the trip to other land and for vlogging.
RAW looks ok and no Stutters. BUF from this point 13:14 forward Stutters every few seconds freeze frames from 3-8 frames are identical. Starts, Hammer 3 frames freeze, Screwdriver 8 frames freeze, Glasses 5 frames freeze, ... I counted at least 60 stutters from that point to end of video. Sorry for bad news :( hopefully it is ProRes and not overheating.
The newer Kingston Canvas Select Plus cards also work well with the BMPCC. When compared to the Canon R footage you can really see how red the prores is, that's probably why a lot of people recommend a IR-cut filter. C-mount lenses are really an unreliable bunch, even with adapters is a crapshot and you can only hope they'll focus to infinity and not vignette you into oblivion.
The Canvas Select Plus worked but not in raw for me! . The Kingston SDXC Canvas Go Plus (the blue one) in 256 Gb Worked in raw without a problem! Almost same price.
If you’re going with video-centric cameras like the BMPCC for the studio might as well try the BGH1. 10MP Micro loser, monitoring/controlling through your phone or computer, up to 240p (VFR), autofocus, and portable/riggable
Best SD card for the OG BMPCC is the Kingston Canvas Select Plus 128GB or higher, works perfect in RAW CDNG, and it's cheap. Also I have a couple cages for the camera, reach out and I'll show you what I have and you can have one, I'll send it to you.
I bought a Canon C300 mk1 including 5 batteries and 2 memory cards for 450 Euros. Technically it's not comparable to modern cams but it's so much fun to shoot with and there is sth special about the image quality. PLus working with these tiny file sizes comes in very handy. :)

Someone probably already said it but if you want to lower your exposure you should be lowering the shutter angle. 360d is like a 1:1 shutter. Go down to 90 or 45 etc if you are overexposed.
I went down that road, pretty soon with BM. you will want internal ND’s, longer battery life, flip screen, smaller files. that would be a C70 or R5C with the variable ND filter adapter. Renting is an option to check it out for a week. I’m really happy using a C70 and R6 combo It’’s a great learning experience for RAW workflows.
We're all proud of you for finally going with a device that is made for videography. And I think we're all a little disappointed too. I reckon with the right lenses and set up, this will produce exceptional results. There's a dude in the comments who lists an abundance of items to make the cinema truly yours. Keeping my fingers, toes and even my nuts crossed.
I have such a love-hate relationship with my bmpcc. It produces some of my favorite images- and is one of the most frustrating cameras I've ever used. Can't wait to hear your future rants lol
BMPCC looks like it has more range than the canon, you need to get a color checker chart and find where neutral white point really is in your setup, then go get one of those *your camera model* to alexa LUTs to strong arm the color science into something everyone likes.
This is probably the single best tip for getting the most out of the bmpcc-og. I don't know if it's just that the Arri color space has a nicer highlight roll off, or if the entire gamma and color curves are just much more refined, but you're spot on. I was experimenting with color space transforms one day, tried Arri log, and was blown away at how much it improves the bm footage. Not only does it make a basic Rec709 conversion look way better, it makes grading sooooo much easier in almost every respect.

Welcome to planet frustration 😊 it’s egregious but endearing. Im suitably entertained by your experience so keep on going with it for our benefit if nothing else. I did give you some important info about the SD cards in the comments of your last video, looks like the c mount lens might be the one I have, the Olympus 7-14 is better and there are some Lumix lenses that are commonly used by others . As I mentioned before be careful with that HDMI port and hanging cables off them they break really easily. One bonus with using Davinci Resolve is that you get to use the first tab on the colour page for your incoming video format where you can retrospectively change the iso and other (camera) settings when using CDNG RAW.
I actually think you've created a new cinematic standard with those frame skips - just as the father character is starting to show emotion, the skips accentuate how his mind is skipping back to his younger years when he could walk.
Casey, have you seen the BACK-BONE mount mods on action cams? Depending on the GoPro model, you can get some really crispy 5.3k60p, 4k120p ...etc. With a the x5.6 reach of a loser-super-micro sensor, it might actually be an amazing birding setup.
6:25 SAME! I only shoot in ProRes since my card does the same with RAW. Despite being completely up to spec. Too bad cause with that there go 2ish stops of dynamic range right outta the gate. 12:16 Yup, rig it out. I got a 96Wh powerbank with dc out adjustable from 4-12v just strapped to my big ass frankensteined shoulder rig. Fits like a love though and can probably go on smallrig™ too. Anyway, the furthest I ever got it down to was 42% at a 14h shoot. That's the best drainer I could do, so that is no concern. It's not that the camera is that power hungry, the batteries are simply that shitty.
When you said "the cinema" I guessed the "is ours" part. I do think you can make that camera be something special when you get the right video hobo lens for it.
You can get a lens mount adapter that has a shutter diaphragm and it to control the f-stop for just those situations like you're Leica that also maybe try the TT artisan manual focus 7.5 f2 I think that would be 22 equiv it's a very good lens
Tokina 11-20 f2.8 is an amazing lens, the 11-16 was even better, I had it, it was absolutely great, and when I traded it in to the local camera store, they gave me more for it than I originally paid to buy it brand new, because it was grey market lol.

C-mount is interesting. You can get all kinds of freaky lenses for almost no money, tiny but they're all manual freaks. I have a fujian 35mm for my pentax q, it's a freak of nature, human nature...

I tried bmpcc a few years ago. I ended up buying the canon c100ii used instead because it was a lot easier to shoot for weddings and interviews.
Just sold a C100 Mk2 for a BMPCC 6K G2. Very happy.

Sigma Fp can shoot 1080p raw internally, pretty much what the pocket does. but with larger sensor.

This is simply because of yes, the size but also the organic soft image it produces combined with C-Mount lenses that I've modified from the 70s and mounted using a $6 adapter. You can get S16 glass made by respected modern brands like Cooke, Angenieux and other relatively cheap dark horse lenses that completely covers this sensor and really brings you into the Cinéma Vérité world with their swirly bokeh and flat colour rendition. I leave a $20 Cosmicar lens on it most of the time that's about the size of your thumb and is tack sharp.
It's so much fun to pass the Pocket around to family members during a get together and see what moments they capture...and want to capture because of the cameras simplicity to operate and non-intimidating size. I'm over the sharpness/ resolution war and I much prefer uniqueness and character in an image. The Pocket and Micro are the best base digital cameras to build off of and continue that lost 'dad footage' collecting dust in peoples attics. For me, it bridges the gap between old film aesthetics with a modern editing pipeline perfectly. It's also a great conversation starter piece of gear :) I should add that getting a RAWLITE OLPF gets rid of moire, IR pollution and a significant amount of chroma noise as a result. You can then run your edit through Topaz to upscale it to 4k which sharpens the footage. It looks better than sharpening already digitally sharpened footage (like the Pocket 4k). Keep shooting - you'll warm up to it eventually! Also I'm in Toronto, Leaside. Sup.

Voightlander 10.5mm and Kowa 8.5mm Best choices out there. Voightlander is F0.95 so you'll get the bokeh, but you should also get the Green Kowa, (f2.8) to complete the trip to other land and for vlogging.
RAW looks ok and no Stutters. BUF from this point 13:14 forward Stutters every few seconds freeze frames from 3-8 frames are identical. Starts, Hammer 3 frames freeze, Screwdriver 8 frames freeze, Glasses 5 frames freeze, ... I counted at least 60 stutters from that point to end of video. Sorry for bad news :( hopefully it is ProRes and not overheating.
The newer Kingston Canvas Select Plus cards also work well with the BMPCC. When compared to the Canon R footage you can really see how red the prores is, that's probably why a lot of people recommend a IR-cut filter. C-mount lenses are really an unreliable bunch, even with adapters is a crapshot and you can only hope they'll focus to infinity and not vignette you into oblivion.
The Canvas Select Plus worked but not in raw for me! . The Kingston SDXC Canvas Go Plus (the blue one) in 256 Gb Worked in raw without a problem! Almost same price.
I’ve got two 512GB Green Kingston Canvas Select plus cards and they have always worked perfectly for CDNG RAW never had a dropped frame.

If you’re going with video-centric cameras like the BMPCC for the studio might as well try the BGH1. 10MP Micro loser, monitoring/controlling through your phone or computer, up to 240p (VFR), autofocus, and portable/riggable

Best SD card for the OG BMPCC is the Kingston Canvas Select Plus 128GB or higher, works perfect in RAW CDNG, and it's cheap. Also I have a couple cages for the camera, reach out and I'll show you what I have and you can have one, I'll send it to you.
I bought a Canon C300 mk1 including 5 batteries and 2 memory cards for 450 Euros. Technically it's not comparable to modern cams but it's so much fun to shoot with and there is sth special about the image quality. PLus working with these tiny file sizes comes in very handy. :)

When I saw yesterday's video, I knew you were setting yourself up for a rant.
Someone probably already said it but if you want to lower your exposure you should be lowering the shutter angle. 360d is like a 1:1 shutter. Go down to 90 or 45 etc if you are overexposed.

I went down that road, pretty soon with BM. you will want internal ND’s, longer battery life, flip screen, smaller files. that would be a C70 or R5C with the variable ND filter adapter. Renting is an option to check it out for a week. I’m really happy using a C70 and R6 combo It’’s a great learning experience for RAW workflows.

I have such a love-hate relationship with my bmpcc. It produces some of my favorite images- and is one of the most frustrating cameras I've ever used. Can't wait to hear your future rants lol

BMPCC looks like it has more range than the canon, you need to get a color checker chart and find where neutral white point really is in your setup, then go get one of those *your camera model* to alexa LUTs to strong arm the color science into something everyone likes.
This is probably the single best tip for getting the most out of the bmpcc-og.
I don't know if it's just that the Arri color space has a nicer highlight roll off, or if the entire gamma and color curves are just much more refined, but you're spot on. I was experimenting with color space transforms one day, tried Arri log, and was blown away at how much it improves the bm footage.
Not only does it make a basic Rec709 conversion look way better, it makes grading sooooo much easier in almost every respect.

I did give you some important info about the SD cards in the comments of your last video, looks like the c mount lens might be the one I have, the Olympus 7-14 is better and there are some Lumix lenses that are commonly used by others .
As I mentioned before be careful with that HDMI port and hanging cables off them they break really easily.
One bonus with using Davinci Resolve is that you get to use the first tab on the colour page for your incoming video format where you can retrospectively change the iso and other (camera) settings when using CDNG RAW.
I actually think you've created a new cinematic standard with those frame skips - just as the father character is starting to show emotion, the skips accentuate how his mind is skipping back to his younger years when he could walk.

Depending on the GoPro model, you can get some really crispy 5.3k60p, 4k120p ...etc.
With a the x5.6 reach of a loser-super-micro sensor, it might actually be an amazing birding setup.

I got a 96Wh powerbank with dc out adjustable from 4-12v just strapped to my big ass frankensteined shoulder rig. Fits like a love though and can probably go on smallrig™ too. Anyway, the furthest I ever got it down to was 42% at a 14h shoot. That's the best drainer I could do, so that is no concern.
It's not that the camera is that power hungry, the batteries are simply that shitty.

You can get a lens mount adapter that has a shutter diaphragm and it to control the f-stop for just those situations like you're Leica that also maybe try the TT artisan manual focus 7.5 f2 I think that would be 22 equiv it's a very good lens

Tokina 11-20 f2.8 is an amazing lens, the 11-16 was even better, I had it, it was absolutely great, and when I traded it in to the local camera store, they gave me more for it than I originally paid to buy it brand new, because it was grey market lol.

C-mount is interesting. You can get all kinds of freaky lenses for almost no money, tiny but they're all manual freaks. I have a fujian 35mm for my pentax q, it's a freak of nature, human nature...
The Blackmagic, I recall the OG versions, requires an (IR) infrared filter. You can get an ND/IR combo. Else you end up with brown looking footage.
