Great video, a lot of useful information.
I've been using trackballs for a couple decades. I prefer the thumb controlled ones. I have tried using the finger controlled ones, I just couldn't get used to them.
I like trackballs because you don't need a lot of space to use them.

      Thanks for the feedback!
I tried the thumb version on the past and felt way less precise. Ironic since I use my thumbs to use analog sticks on controllers.

The Huge is what I've been using now for a few months. It took some breaking in before it was accurate, but now it's awesome. I'm thinking about buying another one for my standing desk.

Nice, yeah, that's how I ended up with 3 haha. Like you said, took some adjusting but now it's second nature.

I bounce between the Elecom Huge and the Ploopy Classic quite often. The firmware and hardware for the latter are libre and are programmable via QMK/VIA (QMK through CLI; VIA through app image).

I've been using the elecom huge for about a year. It took a little time to get used to it, but now I actually prefer it to standard form factor mice. plus, it is actually big enough to be comfortable for my giant hands.

    • @Vashinator7
      @Vashinator7  2 года назад

Yes, I've gotten to the point where I generally prefer it as well for general computing tasks.
And yes I got the huge so my hand has plenty of room to rest on it.
Thanks for checking out the video!

I've never tried that one specifically, but I love trackballs as an alternative to mice. It's good to switch things up sometimes, and I find that for art and photo editing, it can be easier to use a trackball than a mouse, because you can have greater precision when you don't have to move your whole arm to move the cursor.

Absolutely, there are definitely times it's easier to get more precise movements with a trackball. Thanks for checking out the video!

G'day Vash, great video mate! I do like the idea of a track ball so I'm not having to move a mouse around the desktop so much, I'm always moving off the edge of the mouse pad which is very annoying especially when editing videos, I may have to check what's available at the local electronics. :)

Glad to hear it. I think there are a few solid trackballs out there. Let me know if you find another good option.

I now have 3 of this track ball, I love it's utility. However be aware the latest one I received via. Amazon does not work with Linux fully. I loaded up XEV and the 3 function buttons issue no codes at all. I took the unit to my Windoze10 box and used the Elcom setup software and indeed all buttons work there. So there is some difference in the firmware between ones older than 10 months ago. The older two I have that do produce XEV output for all buttons and is noted as model MSIP-CRM-ELJ-M-HT1DR on the bottom sticker. The newest one that has issues is R-R-ELJ-H1DR. Otherwise they are identical except for label changes on the bottom. All three are the [BK] model (wireless). Have you encountered the newer one yet and have a Linux work around to get all buttons to report and can be re-mapped?

Thank you for the heads up. I have not seen nor heard of this.
Some searching led me to this: www.reddit.com/r/Trackballs/comments/vzzmub/elecom_huge_not_registering_fn_buttons_on_linux/
It looks like a kernel issue was causing that. What kernel are you running by chance? I doubt it's related.
May have to reach out to Elecom support. If you do, please let me know what you find out. Would like to update my article to reflect any fix we can find.

I also started getting into trackballs using the M575 and have a Huge arriving tomorrow. Really don’t like the thumb Action, way inferior technique for me. I would love to try a CST but the pricing (especially for shipping from X-Keys) is outrageously insane. 164$ shipping for a $159 trackball. Usual shipping here goes for $30-40

    • @Vashinator7

I need to look at the CST and see if it's worth picking up. IIRC, many of the other options didn't have more than left or right click.
Congrats on the huge, definitely an adjustment, but nice if you are spending a long period of time at the PC.

How long have you used these? Do you know if it suffers the same click button failure like Logitech Marble trackball mouse? Been using that for years until the clickity thing underneath the left button failed to bounce back. McGyvered that thing by replacing it with one of the other button's, but that didn't last long either.

Normally you can just get different switches of higher quality and solder them. Upgraded my G305 for Kailh Silents and maybe I have a look at the huge when it arrives.

My main one has been my daily driver for over a year now. It's been used for both my day job and personal computing.

So there are other trackball users our there, eh? Although, unlike you, I greatly prefer the thumb version. I use a Logitech Ergo M575 which is pretty simple but gets the job done. I have used the larger finger trackballs but not one of these. I may have to give one a try someday. Thanks for the video!

Tried the thumb kind once long ago. Was not a fan at all. I also read something about how the muscles your thumb has really aren't designed for it. As long as it works for you though, that's what matters.

Kind of but I don't know how comfortable it would be for your feet.
Then again maybe your toes could control your cursor so your hands didn't have to stop being on the home row of the keyboard

Thanks for the note, definitely still learning a lot of the ins and outs of cameras, will take a look at the auto-focus setup.
