Thank you for the video.. it’s been most helpful. Can you do a video about the position of the tongue and learning how to speak clearly. I’m 5 days after surgery and will be having 4 implants on the bottom within 3-6 months.

Dr. Barry Thanks for your videos, they have been very informative! I'm awaiting my set after extraction in USA going on two months now..WOW Never thought it would take so long, but local Dentist says longer the wait the better chance for healing and fit in the mouth...sounds reasonable.... What is your take on Ultrasonic Cleaners for Dentures Vs. the typical tablets in water routine and your perspective on denture adheasive cream Vs. the Denture Strips (Sea Bond and the Like) for aiding in retention of the lower denture at least? Thank You again for your time and Videos Awesome !!

+Paul Lindsey Hello Paul. First off, it's just Barry. ;) Using a ultrasonic cleaner to clean your dentures is a wonderful idea! First, use a denture cleaner(not the tablets you'd soak your teeth in, like a tooth paste or foam for brushing your dentures with) and thoroughly brush your dentures. After you've brushed your dentures place them in the ultrasonic cleaner. You'll want to make sure you use an ultrasonic cleaning solution in the ultrasonic cleaner. They are available on Amazon. Typically anywhere between 1-4 minutes should suffice to clean your dentures depending on how much debris is on them. When it comes to adhesives I tell my patients to use what they feel works best for them. The same product(even when comparing a paste vs strips) will not always work the same for different people. The best advice I could give you for your lower denture is to have a minimum of two implants placed which will help retain your lower denture. Best of luck with your new dentures.

Thank you Dr. Barry for that information! I would love for you to do a video on bone spurs and what can be done to relieve discomfort from them. Also what we can do besides getting the cut out if they are really small to get them out. I have several on my bottom jaw and none on the top, is that normal as well? So very happy that you are doing videos for all of us new to and also long time denture wearers!

Great info! When you talk about implants are you referring to regular implants or (mini) denture retained implants? I would love to get implants but I am not sure which route is the best. I would love to know how you feel about regular vs mini implants. Downside and benefits of each...your experience. Again. Many thanks to you for taking the time to share your knowledge!

When I talk about implants I am referring to traditional or "standard" implants and not "mini" implants. Both standard and mini implants are both dental implants, however, they have very different uses and outcomes.
To my knowledge this is how mini implants started: Mini implants first started as a interim implant placement for people who had all of their natural teeth extracted. They would place these mini implants(typically 4-6 of them) in the bone inbetween where the teeth were extracted and the denture would then be secured to the mini implants, generally the same day as they were placed. After the bone had healed sufficiently(in approximately 6 months) traditional implants would be placed and left to heal for 3-6 months. After the healing of the standard implants had take place the mini implants would be removed and the denture would then attach to the standard implants.
Here's a photo of the difference between mini and standard dental implants:
      www.aboutyourteeth.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Mini-vs-Traditional.gif
When you look at the mini implant you will firstly notice that it is much thinner compared to the standard implant. This has benefits as it can be placed in areas where there is not very much bone available. It also has drawbacks because of the fact that there is not as much surface area for the bone to integrate with the implant.
You will also notice on the mini implant that the implant and the "ball" attachment(abutment) are all one piece. If you look at the standard implant there is no abutment or "ball" on top of it. This is because the implant is simply that, a implant. With standard implants the implant would be placed and then an abutment is screwed into it. The abutment is the piece that you would then see sticking out of the gums for your denture to snap onto or would be the part that a crown would be made on. With standard implants there are MANY more options available for the type of abutments that could be used. You could use ball atachments, ERA atachments, Locator atachments and the list goes on. You can also have fixed bars that will attach to the implants and then have your denture clip onto the bars, which are attached to the implants. Confused yet? The long and short of it is... mini implants have 1 option for the type of attachment. Standard implants have numerous options. I, personally, am not a fan of ball attachments and therefore do not like mini implants.
There is also the consideration of cost when you are dealing with the two different types of implants. Mini implants are less expensive in comparison to standard implants. In most cases to secure a lower denture you will have at minimum 4 mini implants placed, often 6 will be placed. In the same scenario typically 2-3 standard implants would be used. Even though there are more mini implants being placed the surgical fee is still less expensive due to the fact that the mini implants themselves are far less expensive to buy and there is far less work and equipment needed in comparison to placing standard implants.
As I had said I prefer standard implants. There are many more options available prosthetically and from what I've seen they do have a higher success rate. I also do a lot of All-On-4 cases(permanent teeth in a day) and standard implants give us the ability to offer you permanent teeth so that you'd never have to wear a denture again. You can't get this with mini implants.
Both mini and standard implants will offer you drastic improvements in the fit and comfort of your denture(s). Which one is right for you depends on several factors which you should talk over with your practitioner.
      I hope this helps.

Have you done a video for people that have had several teeth missing for YEARS and they finally decided to get partials? That is me, I am going through some weirdness with my new partials and can't find any videos on the beginning stages for those of us that haven't went through recent extractions.

How do I find a qualified dentist to make a upper denture? What should I look for and questions to ask? Been without teeth for 20 years now. Should I consider a prastadontist instead of a general dentist?
