  • Hatty Walton, who goes by they/them pronouns, was still an infant when their family learned that Hatty was Deaf. Hatty has cochlear implants, which allow them a certain level of hearing, but there are still huge challenges. Hatty’s parents Lisa and Steve have had to fight over the years to ensure that their 13-year-old child gets the same level of education as their other children. This has led to mum, Lisa, becoming a mentor for other parents of Deaf children in Dunedin - including Hatty’s drama teacher whose son was also diagnosed with a hearing impairment. Hatty plays the role of Stella on the TV show Mystic, which means that they have to spend many weeks away from family and friends each year. But with quiet determination and the support of family, Hatty is now on screens around the world - normalising Deafness for other children.
