- I've made custom shoes for famous creators like Mr. Beast and Kai Cenat, but today I'm doing something a little different for someone truly special. I'm making a custom chess set complete with board and pieces for my grandpa!

My stepbrother and I spent one stormy winter's day playing chess. We played 3 games from 8am - 5pm. That was more than 40 years ago and seeing you play a game with your grandfather brought back fond memories. You are very talented!!!

In the future! For the gaps, fill them in with wood glue and then sprinkle saw dust from your sanding over top of it. It’ll give you the same color as the wood and looks less messy

i literally just started woodworking school like 3 weeks ago and this exact idea has been in my head for a while, making a chess board out of an actual log slice. I can't wait to have the knowledge and tools necessary to finally materialize this idea and execute it. this just gives motivation to know this goal is achievable. keep up the great work love the videos

It's called wood widdling. I made my daughter some custom drum sticks when she was little. It was such a satisfying feeling. There is so much you can do with that tool.

An elderly man from the Balkans, that has grown up with hard work appreciates this more than anybody, especially from his own grandson. Absolutely beautiful.
this was so wholesome man, i honestly loved that. I also felt this heartfelt moment at the end cause i miss my grandfather also.
My father was a very skilled carpenter and craftsman. He built a coffee table out of chorion. It had green and white inlays on top for a checker/checker board. This video reminded me of that. I am now in my 30s and my father passed about 12 years ago. I wish I still had that table. Unfortunately it was smashed to pieces when our home was robbed. Anyway just felt like sharing. I am a huge fan of your work. And it's very inspirational to see how much you've grown. One day, if not already.. you will definitely be the who's who of customization!

i never thought that I would begin to tear up watching a Marko video, but watching you and your grandpa play chess together made me think of my grandpa. Cherish those moments you have with him. I lost my grandpa about a year ago to cancer and he still had many years ahead of him but God called him home a little earlier than we thought. keep playing those chess games with him man, im only 15 and i would love to do stuff like that with my gpa if he was still here.

I'm blown away. I'm a woodworker and have made a few chessboards, this came out great! I've never been confident enough to lathe my own pieces, but man you just jumped right into! So much respect man.
I wouldn't bother making the pieces. The ROI on those isn't worthwhile, but you can make a very badass board at a very low cost and in little time.
The amount of effort it takes for one video. You made grandpa proud and the audience amazed. Good job! 🎉

this is beautiful. IMO adding weight to the chess pieces would make them much more satisfying to play with. Something like tungsten or lead weights hidden in the bottom underneath the felt.

When chessmakers make wooden pieces, they use a rectangle of tool steel with the profile of the piece cut out of it instead of a chisel, that's how they make lots of identical pieces quickly
