  • The Top spin is a very practical basic figure employed at all levels (except Bronze) for checking or changing direction, avoiding collisions with other couples. In open levels it is easily followed by dancing multiple chasses or extended weave. Once the man has mastered the entry by controlling his weight and foot and leg tone he will find it easy and very useful. If the lady is drifting in harmony with her partner and not rushing to her next step it is easy to follow providing her partner does not collapse his weight into the right foot.

Great video with everything explained in detail and very clearly. The lady is a great teacher. Also, the explanatory notes are very helpful. Thanks for sharing. Ray (Australia)

Thanks. If these "emergency maneuvers" received more emphasis it would contribute greatly to learning floor craft.

I think so much emphasis today is on routines rather than the skill of dancing and many of the good emergency moves of the syllabus are not taught because they are not flashy. This figure is so helpful in avoiding trouble I wish it was in the Bronze syllabus. It can ceratinly be taught in Bronze for practical reasons though it can't be used in competitions.

Yes, the top spin is absolutely useful! It would be helpful in Bronze but it is on the charts in Silver. It really should be included on the American Smooth charts as well!

Hi Ann, I am sorry I can't get more sound. We found that if we unplug the refrigerator it cuts out a lot of the background noise which is considerable. So we try to remember to do that when we wrap up the lesson. My new software allows me to turn the volume up on editing but this is set on maximum so I can't get it louder. Obviously I am not on mic on lessons which limits the sound. It is better on my newer videos without the hum of the frig and with my edit tools but still could be better for some. This is a normal dance studio and not a sound studio as would be used for commercial video. It works OK for my students and I hope others may benefit.
