  • Over the years I’ve asked my students to describe the connection with their dog in different environments. How is it different inside your house versus your front yard? What about the park? Or, around other dogs or children? Often the response describes the emotional connection “to” their dog; not the two-way connection “with” their dog. We’re covering what that difference is between the connection to versus connection with our dogs, why it's super important to understand, and how growing one can also grow the other.
    In the episode you'll hear:
    • How connection TO a dog differs from connection WITH a dog.
    • What weakens and strengthens the relationship we have with dogs.
    • Common words used about dogs that signal a connection crisis.
    • The reasons understanding and empathy will grow your relationship.
    • How the sport of dog agility, or any dog sport, is like an amplifier of connection.
    • Why it's essential to protect your dog's confidence when beginning agility.
    • How one of my agility students, Jenny, went from overwhelmed to elite competitor with her Siberian Huskies.
    • The story of Cait's Shiba Inu, Moshi, a pandemic puppy, and how their connection evolved.
    • That game by game, layer and layer, you can see the connection with your dog blossom.

What beautiful and inspirational stories. I thank Recallers from the bottom of my heart, always, for educating me, and continues to, on how to build that connection with a dog whom I wanted to return after a month. He still has challenges, but I love our connection to and with each other.

I can certainly identify with the frustration of the lack of connection with my dog. Recallers and handling 360 along with Susan's amazing team continue to help me identify the core issues and come up with a strategy to overcome and succeed. It was encouraging to hear Susan's statement of her connection to This inspite of the challenges.

Thank you for this I lost my first herding dog who we just had a instant connection to and with each other! She just got me and I got her it was like she could read my mind. When she passed I got this border collie and assumed it would be just as fantastic and simple but our connection with us just not there! I’m so happy to have been sent to your videos!

❤ Love this podcast. Thank You Susan and team.
Susan, you do a fantastic job of explaining and distinguishing types of connection with your dog. How we may think we have a certain connection versus what we actually have in reality… whether the dog really connected to/with us!
I realize now, my first dog, I had a weak foundation despite my best efforts to build a connection. I didn’t know the how. Those holes really weakened our base for a strong connection. Our lack of communication didn’t reflect the deep connection I desired with my dog. Thank You for helping me to troubleshoot the why’s and how’s! I hope to build a deeper relationship … in fact, I KNOW I will build a much deeper and respectful connection /relationship with my new puppy as we navigate through Recallers next month!
PS I love the agility photo of You and Feature! You two made such a fantastic team!! What a bond! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

This is so important. Being new to agility, I couldn't wait to go to a trial. My dog and I were a great team at school and at home. I really set myself up for a false sense of confidence. I couldn't wait to trial with my dog. It did not go as planned. My girl ran off from me several times. We had enough connection to barely "q" in our first standard run, but it was a total mess. Then I went to 4 more trials. Because people like to say- "just keep going to trials- your dog will get used to it over time" (I think there is some truth to that but I also think there are other ways to help prep you and your dog) We still continued to struggle with our connection. Why were things going so poorly?! I'll tell you why. I'm a total helicopter parent. When Lily was a puppy, I completely sheltered her and we barely went anywhere outside the house. She knew our house, the backyard and training facility. That's basically it. Now when I look back, it's miracle that we were ever able to finish a run in a trial. But I do wish some of my trainers had suggested that before we go to a trial- maybe rent a ring at another facility or do fun runs somewhere else to see how my girl would react in a new enviroment that isn't as stressful as a trial. I also wish people had suggested going to parks and stores and practice connecting with my dog. I ended up figuring that out on my own, and then students in H360 backed up that idea as well. And finally now I am in Recallers. I feel like I am taking the "long way" around to getting back to a trial- but I think this is the right thing to do for myself and my dogs. We will really build up a well rounded, solid foundation of connection and confidence.

As a disabled person trying to get my dog accredited as an assistance dog (in Australia) I really appreciated this video and the distinction you make between the two types of connection.

My puppy wanders off on our property and she is now starting to come back to me, like she’s checking I’m there still & when I whistle she most times comes to me, she’s only 3 & 1/2 months, I’m absolutely certain it’s because of Susan’s wonderful advice & great games
I’m just praying I will get better at training her properly so she gets better too 😊

What does ther term "bonding with your dog" fit in this? My dog is 19 months and we are not bonded, not sure if that means not connected to or with? We have worked through a lot of issues I have never encountered with another dog. Seriously I don't think I am connected to him and when we leave the inside of the house I am not connected with him.

Very nice topic if i understand right every time a dog owner assumes that his dog is independent or egocentric or something else is because of a week foundation in his training?

I just got my new Belgian Malinois puppy today and am working on the bonding process with him. I think it's going well because he seeks out connection with me and is very enthusiastic. He's still new to the environment so alot of things in the room interest him but I seem to be able to get his attention back pretty quickly when he veers off into exploring some object. He's fallen asleep at my side a few times today so that seems like a sign he feels comfortable with me, but does not like to be left alone even for a few minutes. Hopefully that will pass in a few days with some practice. I'll see if he sleeps through the night when I put him in his crate at bedtime in another room.

I’ve joined HSTD, we do agility but my connection isn’t strong enough to stop him barking at newly installed lights. Should I stop until I’ve built a better connection. I feel we are wasting the session as he spends his time doing a few jumps then running off to bark at the lights. Thanks

i was doing really well using positive reinforcment as a first time dog owner.. i went and got help from a trainer who uses way more positive punishment and some corrections than ive ever done and im so uncomfortable with the methods and it feels like my dog and i arent the same after a few months of board and train.. i put in heavy hours socializing and training milo and i knew i was making great progress.. after 2 months and milo being 2 now.. its like i have to re teach him how to do things the way i liked way more and milo is 10x more distracted after the b&T vs before. i wanna know.. is it possible to regain what i had before? because being in pubic feels much much harder than ever before and his food drive is something i worked hard on improving and now it isnt as great as it was before. she taught zero obedience and focused on some core barking issues over that span vs improving the 100+ hours i put in over a year and a half.. it just feels like milo and i arent as strong in terms of bond as before. i used to exercise him and train every day heavy and she did not do that... i feel like i shot myself in the foot . im so discouraged
