Here’s how Diamond-Star Motors merged two automakers in one factory

In this episode I provide the history of Diamond Star Motors, a 50-50 venture between Mitsubishi and Chrysler between 1985 and 1995, all built in a new factory in Normal, Illinois. Their first models were the Mitsubishi Eclipse, Eagle Talon, and Plymouth Laser. But by 1991, Chrysler needed cash, and sold their half of the company, and by 1995, it was renamed Mitsubishi Motors Manufacturing America. Additional Mitsubishi and Chrysler cars were also built in the same plant, but most DSM fans only consider the Eclipse, Talon, and Laser to actually be DSM cars.
I remember when the second gen DSMs came out I was at a friends house and her dad pulled up in a brand new Eagle Talon. I was only 11 or 12 at the time I thought it was the coolest looking car.

@@Sanpedranoazul It was - the rear deck spoiler was integrated nicely and you had the two tone roof to body line. Twas my first car (self-bought). Served me quite well - fun to drive. Got the 1st gen DOHC model in 1990 so the hood-hump wasn't a decoration like it was on the SOHC models. The only ding was the common lament with the pop-up headlights. They didn't jam, like on some cars - but they did cause headlights to die prematurely because of the vibration on the mounts being more than on a non-moving headlight. You also had more trunkspace on the base and midrange (Talon and Talon TSI) than the AWD model (TSI AWD) because of the lack of trunk intrusions.

Original owners are rare as hens teeth, congrats on sticking with this awesome platform! I wish I'd have got one brand new, I've got 8 turbo models and trying to find mint parts is hard as hell.

I have a framed picture of me hugging the hood of my red 97 TSI AWD. That front bumper that looked like a viper God the nostalgia. You're so lucky you still have yours.
At this point the Eclipse is an automotive icon. They were handsome, great driving cars that gave a run for the money with the Acura Integra and others.
Definitely. They revolutionized the American car scene. The Eclipse essentially pioneered the 90's and 2000's tuning craze ever since it hit millions of screens when the first Fast and Furious movie came out, and became an icon ever since. The third gen had a main role in 2 Fast 2 Furious and the 4th gen was popping up in every racing game of the era. I always say that no matter who you are, you have a family member or friend or someone you're associated with that once owned or owns a Mitsubishi Eclipse.
My brother was among the first to be hired at this new plant. I got to tour it once completed, they had a day where employees could give tickets to friends and family. At the time the plant was state of the art, very automated. Today the plant is owned by Rivian, who will be making electric vehicles there, including delivery vehicles for Amazon.
Hello Bloomington Normal! Still have family there. Never got a plant tour - but I did drive around it with my DSM car looking at the facility from all angles.

This is so cool. I mean yeah it's just your average plant producing cars, but for a DSM geek like me, I'd love to hear some insights. Do you think you could ask your brother next time you see him, maybe he remembers something specific about these cars or something interesting at the assembly line?
I love the beginning of the video when the commercial mentions that America wouldn't see a total solar eclipse until 2017.
The umbra was just 24 miles from where I live in Middle Tennessee.
It was quite amazing watching it from our front yard.

My dad was there when these things were new, and when the evo 9 came out in 06 he got a RS in wicked white. I pretty much grew up on mitsubishis and DSMs and im a proud owner of my own 1g, a 92 plymouth laser rs turbo awd. Alot of people really dont realize how important these cars were to modern american car culture, If you go to any big "tuner" shop today and find the 50 or 60 year old guy who runs it he and probably a few of the older guys that work for him had a turbo dsm in the 90s.
I own a 2021 STI, past car 2019 STI. But 15 years ago in 2006 I bought a brand new EVO 9 GSR. I owned it and sold it in 2010 for a suv.
Working at an automotive lighting plant the past 30+ years, we produced almost all the lighting for DSM. Good youthful memories for me.
Back in the mid 90s, I went there several times to sort parts. My company made several parts for their cars.
I remember when it was break time and they would play Van Halen "Dreams" as the warning bell. They also had electric carts that would go pick up parts and take them to the work areas. They would be playing mary had a little lamb as a warning they were moving.
They had a custom made convertable used for parades. This was years before they actually made convetables.
Still hate that music.
Brings back memories, I worked in that plant for almost 3 years just after the change to MMMA from DSM.

When the 3000gts were new, only the rich dad's owned those, at least the VR4 twin turbos. I was a young kid who could only afford to build and race a 1G 😀

This partnership was EPIC! Produced some (really, just the Eclipse!) of the most recognized vehicles the 90's would ever see! What a time!
These were fun cars , i had a Talon and eclipse 90 & 91 both turbos.. lots of good times in them both. They were quick and handled even better

Thank you for doing this video. I had a 94 Eagle Talon and loved that car. From the good looking exterior to that distinct, wrap-around interior cockpit. Drove my Talon for 6 years. I wish they would bring back the Eclipse as a fun sport coupe.
All these sedans and crossovers are bland and uninteresting.
I had a 3G with the v6 and a 5speed 10 years ago, I absolutely loved that car, it was reliable and took a lot of beatings. Sold it to my brother and he crashed it 😔

Not uncommon - mine was crashed by the buyer when I sold it. The Nissan 350Z suffered / (still) suffers the same problem with owners not handling the horsepower responsibly. The 350 being FAR more insidious because of the HP/cost ratio being massive. It really is a beast of a car for the price.

Me too, had quite a few cars from the 80's and 90's ..had a 90 Talon RS Turbo and a 91 eclipse TSI.. lived them.. wish i keep one
Besides being cheaper to have composite headlamps, safety regulations were kicking in that killed popup headlamps. Basically if you hit a pedestrian with popup headlamps, they won't just rollover the hood and top of the car, but get more severe injuries for obvious reasons, protrusions sticking up causing considerable damage. Like spikes on a wall..
I love the look I get from people that see me still rockin pop up headlights in the 2020s.
I drive by the entrance to that plant. There are huge signs on the interstate that used to say Mitsubishi Way on the exit.
Now the sign says Rivian Way. Its nice to see that plant operational again and turning out those sweet trucks.
I had a "friend" who owned a Plymouth Laser, probably the last well built cool car they built other than The Prowler. After seeing these videos, I've come to the realization that Chrysler has had more partners than a ballroom dancer...

Wow only 10 years in production? They made one hell of an impact. I remember driving a lot of these cars back in the day when they were brand new and there was definitely something to be said for them back in the day!!

I'd like to see one about the Dodge Raider/Mitsubishi Montero. My dad had an 87 Raider. I'm also curious about the Mitsubishi/Dodge/Jeep pickups that seemed the same. It's weird that the DSM period is noteworthy, but the rest of the Chrysler-Mitsubishi corporate relationship isn't. I'm going to let it remain a mystery until you make a video about it.
The small Jeep pickups were based on the XJ. The 80's Mitsu Might Max / Dodge D 50 were Mitsu. As a side note, Mitsu made Flat Fender " Jeeps " under license, these had a Mitsu drive line.

i own a minty fresh 1990 GSX and man i love it!! i’ve wanted a 1G or 2G for like 17 years since i was a kid i owned a 2G GSX but it was a clapped out project. now i have a beautiful 1G GSX i spent MONTHS looking for a perfect GSX and i finally found one!

Very interesting. I've always been curious as to the relationship between Chrysler and Mitsubishi and where everything went south. And I'm not a tuner fan, but those second-gen Eclipses were super cool.

I owned a 1995 Mitsubishi GST - 2.0 L, 4cyl Turbo...with 210 HP...It was an amazing car with stunning design and curves that made it a modern classic in my heart. It had a 2 tone color (top was white with a bottom silver stripe) with many beautiful finishing elements such as exhaust tips, well integrated fog lights and a nicely integrated rear spoiler and tail light cluster. Power and driving dynamics were perfect - build quality was good for exterior and drivetrain parts with a just decent quality on the interior cabin.
I still have photos of this car on my office wall.
I got my license a year ago. I turned 18 ten months ago. I got my very first car 5 months ago. Its 2g Eclipse GS. I absolutely love it!!!!

What about two door SUVs? Back in the 90s and early 00s, there were tons. Blazer, Cherokee, Explorer, Samurai, Tahoe, Bronco, Pathfinder, Navajo, Jimmy, Wrangler, RAV4...
Now there's the Bronco and Wrangler. For a while there, it was only the Wrangler.
I had a 99 Explorer Sport back in high school and I loved it.
I'm pretty sure that no gen of the Tahoe's have ever been two door.
@@TheCriminalViolin I think only the GMT400 ones were. For a few years the two doors were still called the Blazer until they decided to just merge the Tahoe name into the 2 and 4 door options.

From what I've seen at DSM meets and when Mitsubishi used to have owners day events, the Avenger and hardtop Sebring are generally accepted as DSM cars. I'm also fairly sure that the Avenger / Sebring is closer to the Galant than the Eclipse (which itself is an offshoot of the Galant's platform).
The sebring avenger both had dsm tags on the firewall, so that makes them dsm cars.
I own a 1996 Avenger and it is based on the 7th generation Galant.
Yep, and my 1996 Galant ES even had an owners manual printed too late to be replaced, like all 96 Galants, with maintenance info and specs on the 2.5L V6 from the Sebring/Avenger that was never offered in the Galant. Even had drawings of the engine bay and fluid capacities. The Galant wouldn't offer a V6 in the US until the 1999 8th gen and its 3.0L 6G72.

I remember riding the bus to Junior high ‘91-‘93 we passed an eagle dealership everyday and I gawked at the talons every time we passed. My fave was the black and silver two tone. I would love to see the stealth/3000GT comparison. Another 2 cars I loved.
My 1997 Eagle talon AWD turbo was the best car I ever owned and I miss it dearly. 16G 650cc injectors and a modified Starion front mount intercooler. Can't forget the APEXi AFC to manage fuel through out the RPM band.

I was at the mall for the 9th grade science fair ( spring of 1990) there was an Eclipse there on display. I fell in love. The Eclipse and the Z32 are my favorite cars from that era...also two that I've never owned...because "used turbo boy-racer cars" 🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for doing the dsm cars! In the gen2 eclipse/talon was THE car to have in the late 90s. They were EVERYWHERE. Sadly the tuning crowd ruined them and mitsubishi ruined the eclipse with the 3rd gen making it heavy and less fun to drive.
And now it's a crossover!
people often call the 3rd gen heavy while its lighter than the gsx models and only a hair heavier than the gst 2900lbs and 3200 for the gsx, The 3rd gen gt coupe was 3050lbs. If you compare the n/a 4 cylinder option in both gen the 3rd gen is 100lbs heavier but has 10 more hp. The v6 option also had the same hp rating as the turbo 4.
@@n.d.4317 the awd talons are heavy no way around it. My 1gb awds weight 3096lb with half tanks, my 2g's weight slightly more with half tanks. The main thing with the 3rd gen eclipse is it had less power was only fwd and got major down grade suspension wise. The first 2 generations will always be the ones to have. but mitsu did make an attempt to bring back a level of performance with the 4g eclipse, they're really not to bad once you get over the looks.
@@n.d.4317 the v6 gt was 3180lbs and thats with fwd. Being more nose heavy also takes away some of the fun (this is the case for all fwd cars with a v6. I have an accord v6 and you can feel the weight making the steering less responsive).
@@robbalinski1606 i liked the gen 4s lookes but again the problem with them was they were too heavy. the i4 was 3250lbs and the gt was 3540lbs! Thats heavier than the accord and altima and mazda6 midsize sedans of the time which had better suspensions and more powerful engines.

I had a white 1991 Plymouth Laser RS Turbo. I enjoyed it a great deal. I can’t remember the last time I saw a First Gen Eclipse/laser/Talon.
My work partner bought a brand new Canadian version of the 1993 Talon 2 litre model. One of the smallest, and sexiest cars that I have ever driven. That thing was a whole lotta fun.

If you're looking for ideas, I'd love to see a video about the 'bubble' car fad of the early 90's, between cars like the Mazda Precidia MX-3 and it's bizarre 1.8L V6, the Nissan NX2000 which was the first SR20 motor to hit American shores, and the Toyota Paseo.
10 years ago I had a 1992 GSX. And really for no real reason other then the fact that it needed a proper tune, I sold it. I'm haunted everyday by the mistake I made. The car is a collector's item now :(
First DSM i owned was a 2gB GS-T sypder(red/tan). It was my diamond in the rough and opened my eyes to DSM. With the stock turbo and basic mods it would keep up with a few modded WRX's and some turbo honda's. Early to late 00's every import racing club had atleast one serious DSM in the gang and that DSM was always one of if not THE fastest car of the bunch. (when it was there and not being rebuilt from the last race lol "race, rebuild, repeat")
I remember as a High School student seeing a lot of DSMs at the drag strip. I have a lot of fond memories of them.
I lived on 38 miles from DSM Diamond Star Parkway is off of I74 exit 118 Diamond Star Parkway which is now Rivan Parkway. My Uncle Larry (passed AWAY 2 MONTHS AGO). He worked there from 1988 to the closure in 2016.
From the commercial at the beginning which I had totally forgotten about but quickly remembered, to the clips of The Fast and the Furious, to the nostalgia I felt as you were closing out the video starting at 10:46, this was very nicely done. I was never into DSM but had some friends in the mid 2000s who owned them. I know these cars have always had a very loyal following 👍

I had a beautiful 2G Eclipse. A '97 GS-T Spyder. Bright red, with a tan top, and, tan leather interior, a 5 speed, and, the Infinity stereo w/ factory amp & sub-woofer. Most importantly that sweet, 210hp 4G63 turbo four.
I had a 1991 Plymouth Laser with the 2.0 turbo and a 5-speed, it had a horrible grinding noise in the transmission when it was running and the clutch wasn’t depressed, but it was one of the most fun and reliable cars I’ve ever had

Those cars were BADDASS‼️ I owned a 1992 Laser RS Turbo and a 1996 Eclipse RS. To say those cars were fast was an understatement! The Laser wouldn’t just accelerate it would LAUNCH! Drove it all the way till the death of its turbo. The Eclipse was fast as well even without turbo. I broke my own record when I went from L.A. to San Francisco in 4 hours doing 125mph. The car drove smooth as glass. I drove it till it died as well. Good times😎👍🏽.

My dad worked at DSM for the first few years, to this day he has a big box of early 90s Talon/Eclipse/Laser decals
He occasionally decorates his cars with them, theres only 1 GMC Sierra GSX Turbo 16V in the world🤣
I drove a red and black 1992 Talon TSI to prom and it's some of the most fun I ever had in a car. I've never stopped wanting one...today they're impossible to find in awesome condition.
This is awesome. I love your videos. DSM cars are probably my favorite cars on the planet. I just love them so much. 2 of my good friends, one had a gsx the other had a Plymouth Laser RS AWD. I grew up in Cypress CA which was Mitsubishis NA head quarters of the time. They used to have Mitsubishi Owner's day. We would all go there. I had a 3000GT SL which is the non turbo DOHC V6 variant. Slow but fun. I miss the true DSM cars. Although mine wasn't a DSM, I have a fond place for older Mitsubishi cars in my heart.
I had a Plymouth Sapporo in ‘79, or ‘80. Really liked that one, with 2.7, 4 banger
I miss my 1GA... A GS-T FWD and man.. With an exhaust and an open K&N filter I was spanking mustangs all day long.

Bought the "95 new, first mods were air intake & cat back exhaust, I never looked back.
Rode the tuner craze wavy after watching DSM's lay many street cars to waste and Fast & Furious movie took DSM after market parts to another level in popularity.
Lots of import tuners & after market parts shops started up using DSM wrenching, parts & tuning as the shop main stay.
Still have her, with 22K miles on the body, countless mods, pumping out 707 AWHP of damn good fun.
I think the Subaru SVX would be a great video as well. Love this channel. I love hearing about these older cars.

I remember DSM. I owned a 1991 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX which I LOVED because it had the famed 4G63 engine mated to a 5-speed manual with AWD. When I bought it it had 79,000 miles and I drove it for 3 years until the clutch went out and unfortunately I didn't have the money to fix it so I sold it. Beautiful Video. I have a suggestion how about a video on the Hyundai Tiburon I hardly see those around
I owned a 1992 Plymouth Laser RS with all-wheel drive and turbo. One of the most fun cars I ever owned and drove. I later bought a 1994 Dodge Stealth, twin turbo all-wheel-drive. This was also a beautiful car. Eventually both cars broke down and I sold them. The Dodge maybe Resurrected, but the laser I don't know maybe scrap.
The Mitsubishi Eclipse was my dream car in high school. I had a few classmates that had either the Eclipse or the Talon. Both badass, awesome cars for the time.

I will never forget seeing a pre production model in 1988 (or maybe 89) at the NY Auto Show thinking that there is no way that this amazing looking spaceship would be put into production without major changes….and to my shock it was. It truly was at the time a striking and incredibly futuristic looking car. My then girlfriend and future wife (…and future ex-wife) soon after bought a manual base 1.8 Laser….and she had never driven a manual before. I thought her the basics on my 87 Mitsubishi Mirage Turbo the night before she took delivery. The base Laser’s engine and drivetrain in general did let the car down…it was pretty agricultural in feeling. And I never would warm up to either the pistol grip stick or the low seat, high dash seating position. That didn’t deter me in my desire for an Talon which was my favorite of the trio but I never did get it and instead traded in the Mirage for a 91 Nissan Sentra SE-R instead.
I loved these DSM rippers. 👍 Though I preferred the Starion and Conquest rippers, personally. They had such a great body timeless body style that still looks amazing

Okay, you did this one and now we need to see the Mitsubishi Starion/Chrysler Conquest
A data point on import quotas. Have a look at 80's and older Japanese mini trucks imported into the US. The bed has the lower part of the fenders attached with bolts, this was so beds could easily be shipped separately from the truck with final assembly occurring in the US.
The first gen Ford Transit Connect ( mini van aimed at the commercial market ) came into the US with a rear seat and side windows. Once in the US, they had the seats removed / side class replaced with solid panels and were sold as trucks. This was to get around truck import restrictions.
Around 2200 DSM's were made in Dec 88 as a 1990 model year. When the factory was finished in Dec, they started making cars. It was suppose to start sometime in 89. So if you got a DSM from DEC 88 like I do, Some parts are from a 3000Gt like axles and hubs and calipers(single piston)

While we're on the subject of Mitsubishi, how about a video about their first Mitsubishi-branded vehicles sold in the US; namely Starion, Tredia and Cordia (my first new car).
My FAV Mitsubishis and Eagle from the Diamond Star period are the Eclipse, 3000GT and Eagle Talon (preferably the later Talons/Eclipses from the mid to late 90s.)
Had eagle talon growing up modified the hell out of it...loved that car.
Please do the Isuzu Trooper .. I bought a new 2 door Trooper 2 in 1986. I drove the thing for 20 years, I loved it. It was simple and durable and very useful....I miss it.
Sad when you see where mitsubishi is today vs the late 90s when they were the fastest growing automaker. Where did they go wrong?
They stopped caring and only producing cars that follow trends.

The second gen Mitsubishi Eclipse is the Eclipse that I came to love the look of, and know the best as an Eclipse from the first Gran Turismo game on PS1. Always chose it to be Black in color, and AT.

Mitsubishi was one of my favorite brands back in the 80s and 90s, I hope they get their mojo back because they really had some desirable fun affordable cars back then. The current range is just plain rubbish.
They've got a pretty weak lineup right now. Nothing like the Mitsubishi of old.
Going forward, they will be shoveling rebadge Nissan crossovers with CVTs. Sad fate for an adventurous, technology-driven brand with a long history.

I liked the DSM cars and almost bought a Talon Tsi. Several friends owned 1 of the 3. I eventually bought a 3000GT instead.
