Great video. On my full frame Canons, the 40mm pancake was my favorite lens. As I look at which prime to get for my Olympus bodies for low light events or being up close to indoor sports, I have been going back and forth between 17mm, 16mm and 15mm. But I think the answer is that the 20mm f/1.4 is more flexible for lots of different things and it can be combined with a 10mm or 12mm f/2 for when you want or need to go wide.

Hi mate! sorry for the delayed response. thanks for the kind words! I find I'm reaching for this lens quite a lot when doing day to day shooting. For my pro work I still rely on the trio of 1.2 primes though. But for adventure work, the 12-100mm plus 7-14mm + 20mm are a great lightweight match!
Hi Tom, thanks so much for the love! I actually have portrait presets which you can find in the description of my videos. I recommend for the wedding ones though to get pack 2! Currently don't have specific moto ones, but often use the portrait ones and adjust :)

Hi mate. Can do! Although, tbh I've never been someone who has worried too much about lenses being ultra sharp across the board. Most of my images are only seen on a screen so it's negligible. I've found In the end clients look at the overall product and never really zoom in. But interesting to see anyways! 👍
i love it - 58mm is tiny... happends to match the 12-35 lumix and 40-150 plastic fantastic I already have.... think this might be the final lens for me
Hi, great video as always, Thank you for sharing your hands-on reviews from the real world with Olympus gear. Regarding the wedding shoot, I was wondering if there was any particular reason to shoot with ISO 500 while SS 1/2500? Are you shooting A mode or fully manual?
Hi again Hana! I pretty much always shoot in A priority mode. In fact, I always do. I dont remember the last time i didnt ha! The camera is so good that It's become second nature to just adjust settings and keep my shots sharp. I like to keep the iso up a tad higher to ensure the shots are sharp. Really, I could have prob lowered it to iso200, but the difference in quality is literally non existent. I've got no worries about leaving the camera in iso 800 or iso1000 all day either.
Thanks Matt for the extensive review. I'm considering replacing my 17mm f1.8 and the panasonic 25mm f1.7 with the OMDS 20mm f1.4. Main reason is that when I need the wide aperture I need it weather sealed and the 17mm don't feel right to me. How did olympus fix the purple fringing with a firmware update? Stepping down to fix it isn't really an option for me because I can use my 12-40 f2.8 instead 🤷♂️
Hi mate, glad you enjoyed it! I think this could be a fantastic lens to replace both of those two, and to have a weather sealed one certainly helps. If you said you'd had the pro primes I would say not to worry, but this is definitely a viable option to replace the two slower models. Yes, I can confirm the update has fixed that! I use the lens quite a bit as my everyday go to!
Hi there 👋🏻 is there any camera cage or grips made for the Em1 mark III ? i couldn’t find any of them from Smallrig :( any recomendations ? i wish to install my monitors and mic on my camera🥲and get a good balance while shooting videos thanks🙏🏼⚡️
Hi mate! Unfortunately not. There are universal cages though from small rig that do! Or you could be lucky and snare a second hand Em1mk2 cage from them! Check out Nigel barros video he mentions them
Dang man, it looks like everyone has got one and I’m still waiting for mine to ship…. Also, I just found your channel with this video. Thank you for your content.
@@etchd_ hello, thanks for the reply. I actually did end up receiving my lens and I’m really enjoying the image quality of it. I think I’d pair it with an Olympus f2.8 zoom and I’d have a pretty well rounded kit. The only problem is I currently don’t have a f2.8 zoom….
Hi Catherine! Thanks so much for the kind words. She's an amazing addition to my life! Honestly, I prefer to use the 9-point cluster with the continuous af set to +1 sensitivity. I also use the back screen to help move the box quicker while looking through the viewfinder. Have you don't that before? Takes a bit of getting used to, but works a treat! 👍
Haha I try not to get involved in those types of media headlines. What someone says about a system being dead means very little. While they're busy writing that stuff I'm out creating with the gear that enables me 😁😁
I have the Leica equivalent 50mm and the 1.2 equivalent 35mm and this 40 appeals to me because it’s a focal length that can work as both of the above mentioned and it’s nice and compact like the 50mm. I’m conflicted!
Hmm i think if you already have those lenses, there is probably no need to get this one! that is unless you were planning on just using one lens for the majority of your shoots! I use this as my everyday lens when im with the family and space is limited :)
Hey there Matt. Any further info from OM Australia on a firmware update for this lens re CA ? I'm enjoying this lens for it's build, size and overall IQ, but if they can improve it further I won't say no! My 17/1.2 is the "better" lens in raw performance, but for the Em5 mkiii the 20mm is a better fit .
Hi mate, thanks for the question. To be honest I havent checked. I've been super busy and not had a chance to take the lens out again. I will be talking with them again this week so will try and get an update for you. The 17mm is a beautiful lens no doubt, and I think they actually are positioning the 20mm towards more of the EM5 type body, but with the same precision optics and weather sealing as the other pro lenses!
thank you for the good review, really liked to watch it. i dont remmber if i asked you about sigma the m4/3 f16mm f1.4 can be interesting to see them side by side
Hi mate! Sorry for the late reply, I've been on shoot all week. Glad you enjoyed the vid! I haven't actually used or seen the sigma before. Nor have I heard anyone using it? There's always so many options to compare lenses, and unfortunately I only have the Olympus and Sirui glass to use!
@@etchd_ that's ok. You don't need to sorry. Its totally understandable. I have also small son (2 years old) Peter says that sigma is also good choice. Is it possible to write you sometimes on Instagram?
I come from the days of shooting film in photojournalism & documentary photography (since 1987). There was no such thing as a 40mm lens in any of the brands utilized by myself and my colleagues in newspaper and magazine reportage. The classic prime setup was typically a fast 24mm (or 28mm), 35mm (or 50mm), 85mm and 135mm (or 180/20mm lenses) lenses. I shoot with a trio of Pen-f's in my work along with all the former "Premium Primes" - their size and image quality keep me using them even though the fast pro primes are marginally sharper at the edges when shot wide open. This 20mm lens is either too wide or not long enough - it sits right between the 17 & 25mm focal lengths. I don't get why Olympus made this decision, they could have opted for a 14mm Pro Prime in 1.4 or 1.8 and nailed it as that focal length is more appealing to me than either my 12 or 17mm primes. I question the decision to release this lens and my personal opinion is after the initial hoopla around this new lens, users are going to find it one of their least used lenses unless its the only one they have. Just like discontinuing the Pen-f and not releasing an updated version, I question who the hell is making decisions for product development at OM Systems. Olympus is relinquishing a key market to Fuji by not looking at shooters like myself and releasing what I would call "Work Horse" lenses. My brace of what I call "Oly-crons" has yet to let me down. I owned the Trinity Pro Primes at one point but after low light testing where I tend to work, I found that other than weather sealing the Pro primes really didn't justify their cost - for me at least. I'm passing on the 20mm lens for now until I see more reviews/impressions in real world shooting situations.
Hi Cliff, thanks for the extended comment. It sound's like you have a great deal of experience in the field. Great that you have used such a wide variety of lenses. I guess if they made a 14mm pro prime, it would also sit between the 12mm premium and 17mm PRO, which, like you said for the 20mm is either too wide or not long enough. It really depends on what you are looking for right? Agreed that for photojournalism and doco style work, something a little wider would be great, but you have to consider the direction the brand is cementing itself towards, and that is the outdoors and adventure style genre. I know this doesn't suit a lot of original users of the system, who like yourself, have deeper roots in other aspects of photography, but, like you said, its a great lens for someone who doesn't own any of the others. I would be interested to know what other real world shooting situations you are referring to? beyond a wedding and being out in the torrential rain shooting motorcycles is a pretty good test I would think?
40mm is the most versatile focal length, not 50mm or 35mm, but 40mm, this is the golden middle, but 40mm has been forgotten. There are of course 40mm pancakes, but they are not bright. And it's very good that OM-SYSTEM has created such an important focal length and with a large aperture. I would say that this is a mini-revolution.
Sorry for the late reply mate! Yes, the 40mm is such a versatile focal length! I use this little lens all the time when i can only take one. I'm looking to get the 40mm F2 vintage OM prime for my video work as well.
I ordered this lens last night, changed mind and ordered 25 1.8 and canceled this lens order this morning. But RUclips pushed your this video to me. I canceled 25 1.8 and reordered 20 1.4 again 1159 before the delivery cut off time for me to receive before my travel.😂
@@etchd_ thanks for the reply. No regret at all. It’s really the lightest and sharp Pro prime lens to replace my 17 1.8. Glad I made the decision. Thanks for the video!
Congrats! It sounds like you got a full time documentary job ahead and I'm sure you already got so many photos of your baby! 😀 First time watching your videos. This is a much better video on this lens. For Portraits it's a no brainer with the 45 & 75mm for me. I've been looking for a reviewer that showed the use at an event with the DoF. I really like the little 17mm lens but I never bought the Pro model because sometimes I felt it was too wide and if I'm not careful it distorts the subject by getting too close. Then I also rarely used the 25mm because I find it too tight unless I did want a tighter shot in a narrow space without the distortion but still couldn't justify a Pro lens. I've been setting my 12-40mm at @ 20mm and I've enjoyed it. This lens looks like a good head shot, waste level environmental portrait lens too. I do find people liking a wider angle lens over the compressed telephoto lens for portraits because how they see themselves in a selfie. Excellent video. Sorry for the long comment. 😂
Hi mate, thanks for the love and detailed response! Ha lots of photos, but tbh, they're mostly on my phone as it's handy and looks great. I do take this lens though to family gatherings. The 17mm 1.8 is so good, I used it all through central Asia. So small and practical. Interesting about the selfie aspect, makes sense, but I still find girls telling me they hate how their chins and arms look on a wide angle. I'll never shoot wider than 12mm mft unless im standing a long way back and they're centred. Guess it depends on the situation!
@@etchd_ shortly after I entered my comment, I bought the 30mm f/1.4 Sigma as a portrait lens for really tight spaces. Look forward in seeing what it will do.
Damn it. I recently bought a Sony A7iii with a 50mm 1.8 and 24mm 1.8 Lens and already thinking about to switch to Olympus because they are smaller and lighter but still pretty good. The EM1 Mark 3 seems good
Hi Alex, sorry for the late reply mate! I hope you managed to make the Sony work. That is still an awesome camera and with those two lenses (maybe an 85mm) you are all set. If you just bought all of that, I wouldn't make the jump unless you work relied on it :)
Looks like a great lens for street photography, my only concern is CA... Oly 25mm f1.8 has a prominent CA and the pics are softy, and that was the reason for me to order this lens and test it + its size. I'm not a fan of carrying my 17 or 25mm PRO to casual shoots or travels. From what I saw from other videos, the CA in harsh backlight and contrast scenes is really prominent. Which is a huge disappointment... Is there a way to reduce CA with e.g. UV, polarazing filters on the lens? Have you tested it in comparison to Oly 25mm f1.8 and 17mm f1.2 PRO? and CA in RAW and JPEG? Is Lightroom good enough to remove such CA without distorting the lines e.g. on the face shot backlit?
Hi Hana, thanks for stopping by. I haven't actually used the 25mm f1.8 so I can't comment on the CA from there. Yes, the CA of this lens prior to the initial firmware update was bad, but it has largely been fixed! My suggestion is that you test one out at a camera shop and punch in to see yourself if it's within acceptable limits for your line of work. I've not found any issues after the firmware was installed! It's funny, i get asked a lot of these types of questions that are super niche and to do with CA or softness around the edges etc, but honestly, I've never once even thought about it. A good image to me looks like a good image and I literally use every lens i own (which is almost all of them) whenever i need that particular focal length or f-stop. The resulting image has never been a factor apart from the pro primes which i use for most lifestyle shoots due to their sharpness. Sorry I couldn't help!
Hi Terry, great question, and I think it would all depend on how far you stood from the subject. You could definitely work around it. Added light is definitely nice, and this lens is even smaller than the zoom! I guess if you already have the 12-40 and enjoy it, then there's no need to buy this one! Hard to say 🤔
Hi, I currently have a pen-f that I love and 2 objectives sigma 30mm 1,4 and the 45mm 1,8 olympus. As a budget I have 1300/1700 Euros and I am looking for one or 2 "definitive" objectives for the meantime (later you will see) that are capable of doing different types of photography ranging from weddings such as portraits even in low light, football matches mainly during the day and occasional landscapes.I am looking for objectives that are unique as compactness, performance and versatility compared to all systems photographic (apsc, full, frame etc ...) if I stay in the micro 4/3 I'm interested and I don't see real alternatives to the Om system / olympus 8-25mm, 12-100mm, 20mm 1,4 and last probably also Om lenses 40-150mm f4 or sigma 56mm 1,4. I am confused because if the 20mm 1,4 can replace my sigma 30mm in all ways, even as a bokeh, I would take it with my eyes closed. 12-100mm and these would also be useful for taking medium and long distance portraits of the spouses. If I really have to keep my pen-f with a single lens I would think of the 20mm or 15mm leica or the announced 9mm leica 1.7 ... or also have a second no micro 4/3 body with other lenses also used? Thanks.
hi Mirko, thanks for the comment. There really is no one single lens that does everything, and it seems you want something to cover all types of photography. one lens would be the 12-40mm f2.8 PRO II if you could only use one.
Etchd nice review, . I would like a lense for dramatic pictures (aritechture, streets, old buildings and nature) would you say its a good lense for that (I have an om-d 10 mark II) my second question: I would like a lense also good for low light and night (streets) Would you think its a good lens for that assuming it has a 1.4F. In comparing with M.Zuiko Digital ED 12mm F2, what suits better for low light?
Hi Jasper. Thanks for the comment. Yes this lens is just a great all rounder type lens. Although, if you are going to shoot indoors and wanted a wide view, you'd want something much wider. This is great for the details shots. I often use the 25mm as my detail lens. I think you already know the answer to your low light question. f1.4 will be better in low light!
Hi Gary, I find i use the 20mm when im heading out on day to day outings with the family or for recces. But for my commercial work i use the three 1.2 primes!
In my opinion 20mm can't be the only lens. If I could choose one lens that would be 17mm or 35mm equiv. 35mm is a standard lens for street photography for a reason. With higher focal length you miss the environment since you usually focus to persons. 17mm is too tight for interior spaces like houses and sometimes too tight for small alleys but you can work around it. 20mm is way too tight in these conditions and you probably need a12mm lens with you.
I always deactivate the focus clutch in the menu. When you are moving fast, an accidental touch of the focus ring throws you out of autofocus, and for a second or two or three, you are trying to figure out why the camera stopped working.
Hi Villiam, thanks for stopping by. Yes it has a few short comings, but for my adventure stills work, I can do without both of those features. Funnily enough I've never once used the l-fn button, I just map my peaking to the focus ring and that's all I use.
@@etchd_ l-fn can do so much more 😉 mine is set to pre-mf. But without these two functions, it won't rule the original olympus pro trio. I use clutch a lot when photographing through trees and branches, so I get the animals instead of the branches. Not that's it's a bad lens, far from. But it is not one to rule the original olympus.

Great video. I ordered the 20mm a few days after it was announced. Waiting for Oly Australia to get stock.
Awesome to hear mate! You'll get some epic shots of that flash bike 😎
Thanks @@etchd_
Christmas is close 😂
Hi there 👋🏻 is there any camera cage or grips made for the Em1 mark III ?
i couldn’t find any of them from Smallrig :(
any recomendations ?
i wish to install my monitors and mic on my camera🥲and get a good balance while shooting videos
thanks🙏🏼⚡️
Hi mate! Unfortunately not. There are universal cages though from small rig that do! Or you could be lucky and snare a second hand Em1mk2 cage from them! Check out Nigel barros video he mentions them
I just use a top handle with rod and that fits a monitor and mic. Check description below!
Dang man, it looks like everyone has got one and I’m still waiting for mine to ship….
Also, I just found your channel with this video. Thank you for your content.
Hi Preston, sorry for the late reply! i hope you ended up receiving yours!
Congratulations on your new arrival., fantastic times ahead! Do you use cluster tracking autofocus at all - when shooting wildlife? Great video thx
It is almost 2022, is m43 dead? Well, I am thinking of getting back into it since this lens has come out :-) Hope they bring a 12/14mm pro lens.
James is a good model, his face has a lot of contrast and he moves to good angles whilst remaining within the focus field.
He is a very helpful guy to have around!
The 17mm is a beautiful lens no doubt, and I think they actually are positioning the 20mm towards more of the EM5 type body, but with the same precision optics and weather sealing as the other pro lenses!
thank you for the good review, really liked to watch it.
i dont remmber if i asked you about sigma the m4/3 f16mm f1.4
can be interesting to see them side by side
I have also small son (2 years old)
Peter says that sigma is also good choice.
Hahaha real world dilemmas. I hope you love the decision! I still use this lens for my everyday stuff :)
The EM1 Mark 3 seems good
cheap em1 m3 from japs ebay
Hi Alex, sorry for the late reply mate! I hope you managed to make the Sony work. That is still an awesome camera and with those two lenses (maybe an 85mm) you are all set. If you just bought all of that, I wouldn't make the jump unless you work relied on it :)
That Sony A7 iii is an awesome camera.
Thank you!
🙏🙏
Come for your new fan ❤
Thank you!
do u have "Fonz Motorcycle" presets?
Hi Alex, unfortunately, I don't! But do have others on my website :)
Just a note on your 58mm comments. The 12-45 and 75-300 are also 58mm.
Hi David, thanks so much for that! You're right. I haven't actually used either of those, but will know for next time! 😁
Nice intro bro
Yoo who dis? Ha thanks man! First time using it. Catch ya at tks?
I wonder if F1.4 gives enough shallow depth of field over my 12-40 F2.8 at 20mm to make any real difference. The added light is nice 👍🏻
Great lens, mate. Just can't justify spending over a grand. I better win Powerball tonight, mate. I'll buy every one this lens.
Hi David, thanks so much! haha, bloody photography gear is so expensive right?!? Even worse when dipping into video :/
40mm才是真正的标准镜头,奥巴这头是不错
I have seen another chanel that reviews this lens, they show a crazy CA😢
Once the firmware was updated it’s all good 👌
Hi, I currently have a pen-f that I love and 2 objectives sigma 30mm 1,4 and the 45mm 1,8 olympus.
I would like a lense for dramatic pictures (aritechture, streets, old buildings and nature) would you say its a good lense for that (I have an om-d 10 mark II)
my second question: I would like a lense also good for low light and night (streets) Would you think its a good lens for that assuming it has a 1.4F.
17mm or 20mm
Thanks for stopping by! If only there was one focal lens that could suit everyones personal goals! we'd be rich !
Amazing lens, but still i prefer 17mm f/1.2!
Thanks mate! I will always have spots for all the primes within my workflow! But for the one fast lens to take hiking or traveling, this will be it :)
Here I am waiting for the Sony and Fuji fanbois that will say this is really a 40mm f/2.8 lens lol.
Haha yes that's true, but in all honesty, 1.2 on a full frame lens is hardly useful for most situations the depth is too much! Does look nice though 😁
@@etchd_ The Fujifilm 27/2,8 equals f4. Factor 1,5 for apsc format
Too bad it doesn't have the same manual focusing mechanism as other pro's in the same system... what a big miss
I know! big shame. Luckily the other pro primes have it!
I always deactivate the focus clutch in the menu. When you are moving fast, an accidental touch of the focus ring throws you out of autofocus, and for a second or two or three, you are trying to figure out why the camera stopped working.
One prime to rule them all. Doesn't have mf clutch. Doesn't have l-fn button.
Nope, this prime won't rule anything else than the new f1.4 line!
Anybody ever compare to the sigma 1.4
Hi mate! I've never used that lens before so can't comment sorry, my only experience is with this and the other Olympus primes!
Or...or...you can mount an EF40/2.8 on a 6D for less money. Your call.
That makes no sense. Why are you comparing a totally different camera and lens, for a different use case
@@etchd_ "Use case" is in your head. Your "use case" seems to be "spend more money than necessary". 🔥
Taking 3-4 minutes telling us what you’re going to show us is intolerable. Bye!!
