Got me wondering if my buddy and I could start a smaller scale version of the same 'card side hustle'. Being able to put commoner decks together to GIVE away, then having 'Booster Packs' for each class of Rs and Ms ready to sale those ppl w the Commoner Decks to get them to 'phase 2' and learn how to build decks and all that... Might not be 'retirement money' or anything, but if it lets us ALSO get the cards we want 'for free' while ALSO helping grow the community seems CLUTCH!
Think the most interesting thing was that Hemal is thriving in fab 2.0 despite the squeaky majority complaining about EV's of 2.0 boxes. As well as when you can get distro pricing or slightly above there is a large opportunity for opening and reselling singles.
Hemal gave me the stepping stones early last year to start my own singles business. Growth isnt quite as fast as his, but i appreciate all the insight he has given me and my business partner.
FAB’s success is contingent on player growth and recruitment. The LGSes play that role and a singles based business that buys direct from distribution would erode and destroy the LGS which in the long run creates a stagnating player base. The success of FAB is not predicated on third parties selling singles and profiting but ultimately it’s about the LGS being profitable from sealed product and being responsible for player recruitment & nurturing.
It’s a combination of both. I trade in singles as well as a value added service but core to the business is player recruitment. If no sustained active effort is put into player nurturing happening then you face an entire collapse of the businesses involved in the game and ultimately all loss of EV. The cards are only of value as long as there is a growing and sustainable player base. Ultimately FAB is a game. A disposable income spend. It’s not gasoline or electricity. The average person can live without the game.
I love the fact that he still have a job and does this on the side. I'm sure he could probably easily just do this but the fact that he wants to diversify his income is great and good lesson to learn.
haha, well he says during this podcast that he does everything through word of mouth and direct customer interaction. You'll need to hit him up on Twitter / Discord / In Person events. Hammurabi TCG or Hemal Petal

How is this sustainable when LGS's are not selling singles?

That is a big takeaway for sure! He's doing presumably hundreds of thousands in sales a year and yet still focuses on maintaining other career paths!
Awesome interview. Learned a lot and its great to see another lawyer has found a way to get some variance in their day with FAB as a hobbie/business.
Thanks, he had so much insight I really hope anyone wanting to start a business in TCG's paid attention!
